Detroit Tigers Team Notes

January 30 in Tigers and mlb history :

1926 - The Major League Rules Committee agrees that pitchers may have access to a rosin bag. On February 8, the American League will refuse to permit its use, but on April 28 the league will give in and allow a rosin bag on the field, but discourage its use by players. The Committee also discusses the possible elimination of the intentional walk, a topic that has come up before, by making the pitcher throw to the batter. Calling a balk on the catcher if he steps out of his box has not eliminated the intentional walk as intended. No action is taken however.

1958 - Commissioner Ford Frick announces that players and coaches, rather than the fans, will vote on selections for the All-Star Game. The vote will not return to the fans until 1970, when Commissioner Bowie Kuhn reverses Frick's action. The decision is a reaction to alleged ballot box stuffing by Cincinnati fans before last year's All-Star Game.

Nick Castellanos remains in Tigers' plans.
Team not looking to trade 3B Castellanos, despite Cabrera move.

But fans should understand something about the Tigers and Cabrera, their indispensable superstar and 2011 American League batting champion.

At some point he will depart the Tigers. And what has been known since the day he signed his seven-year contract extension in 2008 is that Cabrera might well be traded before he hits free agency at the end of the 2015 season.

The Tigers could lengthen his deal, of course. They could also trade him during that summer of 2015, when he is 32, the way many stars are shipped to contenders if their current employer is out of serious contention and needs to do some roster remodeling. You never know if that might be the Tigers' circumstance 42 months from now, but baseball's realities tell you it certainly could be.

Of course, Cabrera at the end of this year becomes an exalted 10-and-5 man, meaning he will have 10 years in the big leagues and five years with one team and thus will carry veto power over any deal.

Some of you who read daily might have noticed I have been away for most days after posting early mornings the past 2 weeks. This will continue for a couple more days. Have had a situation with my 80 something old mom. Got to go, back later.

Victor Martinez out for the season with torn ACL.
from mlbtraderumors

January 30th: Martinez had "microfracture surgery and repairs to both the medial and lateral meniscus in his left knee on Friday," announced the Tigers. The Tigers expect him to have ACL reconstruction surgery in about six-to-eight weeks, which will sideline him for all of 2012.

micro-fracture surgery is what Carlos and iirc Maggs had in the past few years. Also grady sizemore. I wonder if V-Mart will 'actually' be ready for the start of 2013.

Two operations to repair his knee.. He will be out at least a year and I sure hope he can come back at his level he was playing at... That is why Prince is insurance for Victor.
