1886: Detroit Wolverines finish season at 87-36, best winning %percentage (.707) in Detroit pro baseball history ('84 Tigers: 104-58, .642).

1905: Christy Mathewson of the New York Giants outpitches 26-game winner Eddie Plank and the Philadelphia Athletics, 3 - 0, in the first game of an all-shutout World Series.

1907: Cubs beat Tigers 3-1, take 1-0 WS lead. Bill Coughlin catches Cubs' Jimmy Slagle on 1st hidden ball trick in WS history.

1909: Ty Cobb steals home to spark a 3-run rally; Tigers tie World Series at 1 game each in 7 - 2 win over pirates.

1910: Nap Lajoie, in a batting race with Ty Cobb, collects eight hits for Cleveland in a season-ending doubleheader with the St. Louis Browns. The hits were somewhat tainted, however, as St. Louis third baseman Red Corriden played back while Lajoie bunted safely six times. Cobb still wins the batting title with a .383 average.
1910: Scandal surrounds the batting title when the Browns intentionally concede 8 hits to Nap Lajoie. Ty Cobb will eventually be crowned co-champ.

1919: Chicago White Sox starter Lefty Williams gets just one man out in the 1st inning and the Cincinnati Reds go on to a 10 - 5 victory. Cincinnati wins the best-of-nine World Series in eight games. A year after the Series ends, the White Sox will become the "Black Sox", and eight players will be barred from baseball for taking part in throwing the Series.

1926: The St. Louis Cardinals' Grover Alexander scatters eight hits in Game 6 of the World Series while St. Louis tees off New York at Yankee Stadium for a 10 - 2 romp that sends the Series to a seventh game.

1928: Babe Ruth hits three home runs in a World Series game for the second time in his career as the Yankees beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 7 - 3.

1934: The St. Louis Cardinals' Dizzy Dean blanks the Detroit Tigers, 11 - 0, in Game Seven of the World Series.
#Tigers fans pelt Joe Medwick with garbage and bottles after his hard slide on Marv Owen at third base in the 6th inning. Commissioner Landis ordered Medwick to leave the game for his safety.

1938: In the World Series, the New York Yankees become the first team to win three successive World Championships, defeating the Cubs, 8 - 3. Red Ruffing posts his second victory of the Series as the Yankees sweep the Cubs for the second time in six years.

1944: The Cardinals top the Browns, 3 - 1, and win the World Series in six games.

1949: The Yankees pound the Brooklyn Dodgers, 10 - 6, to win the World Series in five games. Pinch hitter and third baseman Bobby Brown is the hitting hero, batting .500 and driving in five runs.

1956: The Brooklyn Dodgers bounce back after Don Larsen's perfect game to tie the World Series in Game 6. Clem Labine comes out of the bullpen to pitch a 1 - 0 victory over the Yankees in 10 innings.

1958: The New York Yankees' Bob Turley pitches 6 2/3 shutout innings in relief to beat the Milwaukee Braves, 6 - 2, for the World Series title. New York becomes the first team since 1925 to win the World Series after being down 3 games to 1.

1964: The Detroit Tigers released Bill Bruton.
1964: The Detroit Tigers released Mike Roarke.

1966: In the World Series, Dave McNally of the Baltimore Orioles wraps up a brilliant pitching display, and a World Championship, with a four-hit 1 - 0 victory. Frank Robinson's home run off Don Drysdale gives Baltimore a surprising sweep of the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers. The 33 consecutive scoreless innings pitched by Baltimore sets a World Series record.

1968: Tigers beat Cardinals 13-1 on HRs from Jim Northrup and Al Kaline scoring 10 runs in the 3rd inning and even Series at 3-3.

2008: The Detroit Tigers signed Eugenio Suarez as an amateur free agent.

2012: The Athletics avoid elimination with a 2 - 0 win over the Tigers in Game 3 of the ALDS. Brett Anderson pitches 6 shutout innings in returning to the mound after a twenty-day injury layoff, setting the tone for Oakland. Coco Crisp scores a run in the 1st and DH Seth Smith homers off Anibal Sanchez in the 5th for the only runs of the game.

2017: In the ALDS, Houston eliminates Boston with a 5 - 4 win in Game 4. Boston takes a 3 - 2 lead in the 5th on a two-run homer by Andrew Benintendi off Justin Verlander, making the first relief appearance of his career. In the 8th, Alex Bregman ties it with a solo homer off Chris Sale, also making an unexpected relief outing, before Carlos Beltran drives in the go-ahead run with a single off closer Craig Kimbrel.

1887: The Detroit Wolverines, champions of the National League, open a 15-game "world's championship series" with the American Association champion St. Louis Browns.

1904: The Boston Americans clinch the American League pennant on the last day of the season when Jack Chesbro of the New York Highlanders throws a wild pitch in the 9th inning to allow the winning run to score from third base. Boston wins, 3 - 2, in the doubleheader opener.

1907: Cubs beat the Tigers 5-1 to take a 2-0 World Series lead.

1908: In the opener of their second straight World Series against the Cubs, the Tigers lose, 10-6 at Bennett Park. Leading 6-5 entering the ninth, for the second straight year, Detroit fails to wrap up a Game One victory. The Cubs bang out six straight singles and steal two bases to score five runs and stun the Detroit crowd.

1920: The Cleveland Indians beat the Brooklyn Robins, 8 - 1, in Game 5 of the World Series. For Cleveland, Elmer Smith hits the first Series grand slam and Jim Bagby, the winner, hits the first Series home run by a pitcher.

1923: It's an all-New York World Series for the third straight year. In Game 1, a 4 - 4 tie is broken in the top of the 9th inning by the Giants as they defeat the Yankees, 5 - 4. Pitcher Rosy Ryan takes the win and Joe Bush is the loser. Casey Stengel's inside-the-park home run is the first Series home run hit at Yankee Stadium. It is the first World Series to be broadcast on a nationwide radio network.

1924: The Washington Senators win their only World Series championship by defeating the New York Giants, 4 - 3, in 12 innings. The winning run scores when a ball hit by Earl McNeely hits a pebble and bounces over third baseman Fred Lindstrom's head.

1926: One day after picking up his second complete-game victory of the Series, 39-year-old Grover Alexander saves Game 7 and the World Series for the St. Louis Cardinals, fanning Tony Lazzeri with the bases loaded in the 7th inning, then proceeding to no-hit New York the rest of the way. The Series concludes with Babe Ruth being thrown out trying to steal.

1931: In the World Series, the Philadelphia Athletics rally for two runs and have two runners on base with two outs in the 9th inning when Cardinals reliever Bill Hallahan gets the final out for the 4 - 2 win in Game 7. The Athletics are denied their third consecutive World Championship.

1937: In the World Series, New York Yankees pitcher Lefty Gomez knocks in the winning run in the 4 - 2 clincher in Game 5 against the New York Giants. It is his record fifth World Series win without a loss. Another record comes when the Yankees complete the Series without an error.

1945: The Detroit Tigers score five runs in the 1st inning of Game Seven of the World Series, and rout the Cubs, 9 - 3, behind Hal Newhouser, who strikes out 10 to win the World Championship. It's the Tigers' second World Series Championship in Franchise History.

1956: Pitcher Johnny Kucks sets down the Brooklyn Dodgers, 9 - 0, as the New York Yankees win the World Series in seven games. Yogi Berra hits a pair of two-run home runs and Bill Skowron hits a grand slam. It's the seventh and final time Brooklyn and the Yankees meet in the Series. In the future, it will take a jet, not a subway, to get these two teams together, as the Dodgers will move to Los Angeles in 1958.

1957: Lew Burdette's third victory of the World Series, a 5 - 0 decision over the New York Yankees, gives the Milwaukee Braves the World Championship.

1968: Mickey Lolich wins the World Series for the Detroit Tigers by defeating Bob Gibson and the St. Louis Cardinals, 4 - 1, in Game Seven.
It is Lolich's third complete game win and comes after the Tigers had lost three of the first four games.
Lolich is voted the MVP of the Series.

1983: John E. Fetzer sells the Detroit Tigers to pizza magnate Tom Monaghan. Monaghan pays more than $50 million for a team that Fetzer invested less than $6 million in when he was part of a group that purchased the Tigers in 1956.

1984: Padres 5 - Tigers 3. Kurt Bevacqua hits a 3-run homer in the 5th inning to put the Padres up 5-3. That score holds and the Padres take Game 2 to even the World Series. #Relive84

1990: The Oakland Athletics sweep the Boston Red Sox for the American League pennant and their third straight trip to the World Series with a 3 - 1 victory. MVP Dave Stewart wins for the eighth straight time in head-to-head match-ups with Roger Clemens, who is ejected in the 2nd inning for arguing balls and strikes with umpire Terry Cooney.

1999: The Boston Red Sox set an all-time postseason record by scoring 23 runs in defeating the Cleveland Indians, 23 - 7. The win ties their American League Division Series at two games apiece. Boston gets 24 hits in the contest, including five by Mike Stanley and four each by John Valentin and Jason Varitek. Valentin hits a pair of home runs with seven RBI, while Jose Offerman and Trot Nixon have two RBI each.

2001: Atlanta take a 2 games to 0 lead in their National League Division Series with the Astros behind Tom Glavine's 1 - 0 victory. Shortstop Julio Lugo's throwing error aids the winning run, which crosses the plate on a double play.

2004: The Cardinals advance to the NLCS for third time in five years, beating the Dodgers, 6 - 2, to win their first-round playoff 3 games to 1.

2005: Vic Darensbourg of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2005: The Cleveland Indians selected Sean Douglass off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

2009: The Los Angeles Dodgers complete a three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals with a 5 - 1 win at Busch Stadium in the NLDS. Andre Ethier has a double, triple and three-run homer, while Manny Ramirez has two doubles among his three hits to lead the Dodger offense. Vicente Padilla gets the win, over Joel Pineiro.

2011: The Rangers take a 2 - 0 lead in the ALCS on a walk-off grand slam by soon to be busted for PED's Nelson Cruz off the Tigers' Ryan Perry in the 11th inning, for a 7 - 3 win. Cruz had tied the game earlier with a solo home run in the 7th. All of Detroit's runs come on a three-run shot by Ryan Raburn in the 3rd.

2013: For the second straight year, the Tigers defeat the Athletics in the 5th game of the Division Series. The team's two biggest stars are the heroes today, as Justin Verlander gives up no runs on 2 hits, striking out 10 over 8 innings, while Miguel Cabrera hits a two-run homer off rookie Sonny Gray in the 4th. Joaquin Benoit picks up the save in the 3 - 0 win.

2015: The Mets are cruising along with a 2 - 1 lead behind rookie Noah Syndergaard in the 7th inning of Game 2 of the NLDS when Chase Utley barrels into SS Ruben Tejada to break up a potential inning-ending double play. He not only succeeds, but also breaks Tejada's leg in the process while the Mets vainly argue for an interference call. Major League Baseball will hand Utley a two-game suspension for his unnecessarily violent slide, but in the meantime, Los Angeles takes advantage of the controversial play to score four runs in the inning and ends up a 5 - 2 winner, evening the series.

2015: The Cubs even the other Division Series with a 6 - 3 win at St. Louis. The Cubs score five times against Jaime Garcia in the 2nd, including back-to-back successful squeeze bunts. The Cardinals hit three homers, but they are all solo shots.

2016: The Nationals win Game 3 of the NLDS, 8 - 3 over the Dodgers. Anthony Rendon homers off Kenta Maeda as part of a four-run 3rd inning, but Los Angeles comes back to within one run thanks in part to a two-run pinch homer by Carlos Ruiz off Gio Gonzalez in the 5th. The Nats put the game away with 4 runs in the top of the 9th, including a homer by Jayson Werth off closer Kenley Jansen.

2016: The Indians complete a sweep of the Red Sox in the ALDS with a 4 - 3 win in Fenway Park. A two-run single by Tyler Naquin and a two-run homer by Coco Crisp give them an early lead, but Boston claws back in David Ortiz's final game to close the lead to a single run; they have two men on board in the bottom of the 9th when closer Cody Allen registers the final out to earn his second save of the series.
