1912: Miller Huggins is named manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, beginning his 17-year career as a skipper.

1935: Cal Hubbard, pro football tackle with the Green Bay Packers, joins the American League umpiring staff.

1957 - With a new balk rule, the batter now has an option after the call is made. If a player gets a hit, he can accept the outcome of the pitch, instead of being only limited to the advance of the baserunner(s).

1959 - Ernie Banks wins his second National League MVP Award in a row on the strength of his 45 home runs and 143 RBI for the Chicago Cubs.
Eddie Mathews finishes second.

1962: Dick McAuliffe's 2-run RBI single with 2 outs starts a 4-run rally in the 10th inning that gives the #Tigers a 7-3 exhibition win in Osaka, Japan.

1975 - Baltimore Orioles pitcher Jim Palmer wins his second Cy Young Award, after pacing the American League in wins (23), shutouts (10), and ERA (2.09).

1980: Japan's all-time home run hitter, Sadaharu Oh, retires from professional baseball. The Tokyo Yomiuri Giants' first baseman hit a record 868 home runs in his 22-year playing career.

1980: The Detroit Tigers signed Dave Gumpert as an amateur free agent.

1980: Steve Carlton of the Philadelphia Phillies joins Sandy Koufax, Tom Seaver and Jim Palmer, as pitchers with three Cy Young Awards. Carlton garners all but one of the 24 first-place votes to take National League honors. He posted a 24-9 record with a 2.34 ERA and a league-leading 286 strikeouts.

1988: The Detroit Tigers released Larry Herndon.

1999: Luis Polonia of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2010: Eddie Bonine of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2010: The Detroit Tigers traded Brent Dlugach to the Boston Red Sox for a player to be named later. The Boston Red Sox sent Pedro Perez (minors) (April 2, 2011) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

2010: Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson dies in Thousand Oaks, California at 76. Nicknamed "Captain Hook" for his tendency to remove his starting pitchers early in the game - now standard practice - he was the first manager to win over 100 games in a season in both leagues, and the first to lead teams from both leagues to World Championships, doing so with Cincinnati in 1975 and 1976, and with Detroit in 1984.

1901: Ban Johnson and Charles Comiskey lease Sportsman's Park for five years for an American League team. Two weeks later it is announced the Milwaukee Brewers franchise will become the St. Louis Browns in 1902.

1914: The ban on Sunday baseball is upheld in Washington, DC by the Court of Appeals.

1922: Pitcher Jim Bagby is waived by the Cleveland Indians to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Bagby won 31 games for Cleveland in the 1920 season.

1936: The Brooklyn Dodgers name former pitcher and future Hall of Fame member Burleigh Grimes their new manager. Grimes replaces another future Hall of Famer Casey Stengel.

1940: Former pitcher Walter Johnson, who won 416 games for the Washington Senators, goes down in defeat as a Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives from Maryland. Johnson entered the Hall of Fame in 1936.

1958: The Baltimore Orioles replace general manager Paul Richards with future Hall of Famer Lee MacPhail. The Orioles allow Richards to continue in another role as the team's field manager. Baltimore will end up with a 74-79 record.

1976: Baltimore Orioles pitcher Jim Palmer, who led the American League with 22 victories and 315 innings pitched, outpoints Detroit Tigers rookie Mark Fidrych to win the American League Cy Young Award.

1976: The Oakland Athletics make an unusual trade by sending manager Chuck Tanner to the Pittsburgh Pirates for catcher Manny Sanguillen and $100,000. Sanguillen will play only one season in Oakland before returning to Pittsburgh. Tanner will lead the Pirates to the World Championship in 1979.

1976: The new franchises, the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays, select 30 players apiece from other American League teams in the expansion draft. The Mariners take outfielder Ruppert Jones with their first choice, while the Blue Jays tab infielder Bob Bailor with their initial pick.

1976: The Seattle Mariners drafted Dan Meyer from the Detroit Tigers as the 9th pick in the 1976 expansion draft.

1991: Terry Pendleton of the Atlanta Braves wins the National League Most Valuable Player Award. The third baseman led the National League in batting average (.319) and hits (187), tied for first in total bases (303) and was third in slugging average (517). Pendleton will also be named NL Comeback Player of the Year, becoming the first major player to raise his average 80 points and add 16 home runs (from 6 to 22). He also wins his third Gold Glove Award.

1992: Walt Terrell of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

1993: Storm Davis of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
1993: Kirk Gibson of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

1996: New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is the unanimous choice as American League Rookie of the Year. Jeter becomes the eighth Yankees player to win the award and the fifth unanimous choice in American League history.

1997: In what Bud Selig says is Phase One of a realignment of the major leagues, his Milwaukee Brewers move from the American League to the National League. Phase 2 will have to wait until 2013, however.

1997: In an unprecedented move, Davey Johnson resigns the same day he is named American League Manager of the Year. Despite the fact that Johnson ended the Baltimore Orioles' 13-year playoff drought in 1996 and led the Orioles to the league's best record in 1997, a dispute over $10,500 in fines to second baseman Roberto Alomar ends Johnson's reign in Baltimore. Johnson directed the fines to be paid to a charity. Orioles owner Peter Angelos is upset with the way the matter is handled and Johnson resigns.

1999: Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Randy Johnson wins the National League Cy Young Award, his fifth overall and fourth in a row. Johnson is the first NL player since the Mets' Dwight Gooden to win the pitching triple crown, going 24-5 with 334 strikeouts and a 2.37 ERA. Johnson also led the major leagues in strikeouts for the ninth time.

In his six healthy campaigns from 1934-1940 (he played just 12 games in 1936), Hank Greenberg batted .320 and averaged 39 home runs and 150 RBIs annually. The Detroit Tigers slugger, who battled anti-Semitism during his career, subsequently spent the next four years in military service during World War II.
