Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

January 26 in Tigers and mlb history:

1895: Baseball officials discuss the possibility of reinstating the old pitcher's distance. They are dismayed by the explosion of offense, which resulted in "long drawn out and uninteresting contests. Besides the brainy pitcher of former days would be given another chance to display his ability in the science of the game."

1919: The St. Louis Cardinals name team president Branch Rickey as manager, replacing Jack Hendricks. Under Rickey's leadership, the last-place Cardinals will improve only slightly in the standings, finishing seventh this season.

1931: The International League accepts the open draft imposed by the major leagues. Until this time, the top minor leagues could control their players and refuse to sell them.

1949: The Detroit Tigers selected Tony Lupien off waivers from the Chicago White Sox.

1951: The Baseball Writers Association of America vote sluggers Mel Ott and Jimmie Foxx into the Hall of Fame.
Ott hit .304 with 511 home runs and 1860 RBI; he managed the New York Giants from 1942 to 1948.
Foxx was a .325 career hitter with 534 home runs and 1922 RBI.

1962: New York Yankees outfielders Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle sign contracts with Columbia Pictures to appear in Safe at Home!, a movie that is to be shot during spring training. The movie will star Maris and Mantle as themselves and feature cameos by Whitey Ford and Ralph Houk.

1963: Major League Baseball's Rules Committee increases the size of the strike zone.
The zone will stretch from the top of the batter's shoulders to the bottom of the knees.
The committee hopes the return to the 1950s strike zone will result in a decrease in runs scored. The results will exceed the committee's expectations, and after the "Year of the Pitcher" in 1968, the strike zone will be tweaked again to give the hitters a break.

1981: Ray Oyler dies of a heart attack in Redmond, Wash., at age 42. Shortstop on the 1968 world champion #Tigers.

1995: Major League Baseball players and owners are told by President Clinton to resume bargaining and reach an agreement to resolve the strike by February 6th.

2006: Fidel Castro confirms that his country will play in the 2006 World Baseball Classic in Cuba's first official reaction to the U.S. government's decision allowing the communist country to participate.

2009: The Detroit Tigers signed Timo Perez as a free agent.

2012: The Detroit Tigers signed Prince Fielder as a free agent to a $214 Million 9 year contract.

2018: Comerica Bank extends its naming rights agreement for Comerica Park through 2034.

January 27 in Tigers and mlb history:

1927: Citing accuser Dutch Leonard's refusal to appear at the hearings of January 5th, Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis issues a lengthy decision clearing Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker of any game-fixing charges. Landis orders the Philadelphia Athletics to reinstate Cobb and the Washington Senators to restore Speaker.
Both players are then made free agents. Philadelphia owner Connie Mack will sign Cobb on February 8th, and Speaker will sign with Washington on January 31st for a reported $35,000.

1937: In Cincinnati, OH, the worst flood in the city's history inundates Crosley Field, covering home plate with as much as 21 feet of cold water. The lower grandstand is completely covered. Reds pitchers Gene Schott and Lee Grissom row a boat out from the center field wall and the resulting photo appears across the country. Fortunately, with the season two months away, Opening Day will be unaffected.

1941: The Detroit Tigers signed John McHale as an amateur free agent.

1944: The Boston Braves fire manager Casey Stengel, who becomes the victim of an ownership change when Lou Perini, Guido Rugo, and Joseph Maney take control of the team. In five years, after Stengel will have achieved success at the helm of the Oakland Oaks of the Pacific Coast League, the New York Yankees will hire him as their manager. The "Old Professor" will guide the Yankees to five straight championships from 1949 to 1953.

1963: John Clarkson, Elmer Flick, Sam Rice and Eppa Rixey are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers Association of America. Rixey will die before the induction ceremonies that summer, marking the first time that a Hall of Famer passes away between the time of election and induction.

1968: The Detroit Tigers drafted Ken Szotkiewicz in the 1st round (3rd pick) of the 1968 amateur draft (January Secondary).
1968: The Detroit Tigers drafted Chuck Scrivener in the 2nd round of the 1968 amateur draft (January Secondary).
1968: The Detroit Tigers drafted Bob O'Brien in the 4th round of the 1968 amateur draft (January Secondary), but was not signed.
1968: The Detroit Tigers drafted Bill Slayback in the 7th round of the 1968 amateur draft (January).
1968: The Detroit Tigers drafted Terry Wilshusen in the 8th round of the 1968 amateur draft (January Secondary), but was not signed.

1977: Boston sports writers honor Luis Tiant as the Red Sox's most valuable pitcher. This is the fifth year in a row that Tiant has won this honor, a record for the award begun in 1952.

1982: The Chicago Cubs make one of the best trades in franchise history, acquiring infielders Ryne Sandberg and Larry Bowa from the Philadelphia Phillies for shortstop Ivan DeJes?s. Bowa and DeJes?s will have a few more productive seasons in the major leagues, but Sandberg, after starting out his career at third base, will become one of the best-hitting second basemen of all time. The winner of nine consecutive Gold Glove Awards from 1983 to 1991, in 1984 Sandberg will lead the Cubs to their first appearance in the postseason since 1945.

1987: The Detroit Tigers traded Chuck Cary and Randy O'Neal to the Atlanta Braves for Freddy Tiburcio (minors) and Terry Harper.

2003: The Detroit Tigers signed Julio Santana as a free agent.

2006: The World Baseball Classic set its pitch limits and mercy rules, designed to protect pitchers in the early stages of spring training and cut short one-sided games.

2013: The National Hockey League's St. Louis Blues pay tribute to a local icon. On the day after Stan Musial's funeral, every player on the team comes out for the warm-up skate before its game wearing jersey number 6, with Musial's name in place of their own.
The Montreal Canadiens had paid a similar tribute to Gary Carter last year, with everyone wearing his number 8 in the warm-up.

2016: The Detroit Tigers traded Jefry Marte to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for Kody Eaves (minors).

Jose Iglesias and Omar Vizquel top B-Ref?s list of shortstops with the highest-ever fielding percentages at that position. Citing that as a preface, I asked Detroit Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire where Iglesias ? a player known for his flashiness and range ? ranks among the best defensive shortstops he?s seen. Unfortunately, I didn?t get the answer I was looking for. Mishearing my question (it?s possible that I misspoke) Gardenhire addressed Vizquel instead. The exchange having taken place during a Winter Meetings media session, I chose to let things be.

?He ranks as good as I?ve seen defensively,? Gardenhire said of Vizquel. ?Going back on fly balls; all the little things. Catching a ball. He was a wizard with a glove. One of the best. Softest glove I?ve ever seen in my life. He?s got my vote, a thousand times over.?

As for Iglesias, his .985 fielding percentage certainly stands out. While the stat itself is of limited importance ? not to mention imperfect, given the whims of official scorers ? it is nonetheless notable in this particular case. Along with being a human highlight reel, Iglesias has played error-free defense at a rate unequaled by any shortstop in history. Think about that for a minute. Oh, and he?s currently a free agent.
