March 30 in Tigers and mlb history:

1944: Branch Rickey suggests the pooling of surplus players if major league 4F players are drafted for military service. Nothing comes of the suggestion.

1946: The Detroit Tigers released Bob Harris.

1966: Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers end their dual holdout. Both pitchers had stayed away from camp for 32 days, threatening retirement in an effort to acquire pay raises. Koufax signs for $120,000; Drysdale settles for $105,000.

1971: The New York Mets traded Dean Chance and Bill Denehy to the Detroit Tigers for Jerry Robertson.

1972: Marvin Miller, executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association, completes his canvass of players on the strike issue. 663 vote in favor of a strike, ten vote against, and two players abstain.

1979: Major League Baseball umpires meet in Chicago, IL and vote 50-2 to reject new offers from the American and National leagues. They will be on strike when the season starts in a few days.

1982: The Montreal Expos sent Elias Sosa to the Detroit Tigers as part of a conditional deal.

1984: The Detroit Tigers traded Charlie Nail (minors) to the Cincinnati Reds for Dallas Williams.

1985: The Detroit Tigers released Dave Gumpert.

1990: The Detroit Tigers traded Doug Strange to the Houston Astros for Lou Frazier.

1991: The Kansas City Royals traded Andy Allanson to the Detroit Tigers for Jim Baxter (minors).

1993: Peanuts character Charlie Brown hits a game-winning home run - his first round tripper in 43 years. Almost ten percent of the nearly 18,000 Peanuts strips created by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz focus on baseball.

1993: The Detroit Tigers purchased Bob MacDonald from the Toronto Blue Jays.

2000: With a swipe of second base, Rickey Henderson joins Ted Williams as the only major league players to steal a base in four different decades.

2009: The Atlanta Braves traded Josh Anderson to the Detroit Tigers for Rudy Darrow (minors).

2010: Dontrelle Willis' comeback is on the right track, as he is advised by Tigers manager Jim Leyland that he has made the team as the fifth starter.

2010: The Detroit Tigers sent Nate Robertson to the Florida Marlins as part of a conditional deal for left-handed pitching prospect Jay Voss.

2010: Pat Venditte, the first ambidextrous pitcher in organized baseball since Greg Harris retired in 1995, gets to show his stuff in an exhibition game for the Yankees against the Braves. The 24-year-old ends the 5th inning by retiring Yunel Escobar on two pitches from the right side; he then moves from one arm to the other as he works his way through the Braves' batting order in the 6th. When switch-hitter Brooks Conrad steps to the plate, home plate umpire Mike Reilly reminds Venditte of rule 8.01 that states that he must commit to one arm, in order to avoid the fiasco of his professional debut with the Staten Island Yankees in 2008, when he and switch-hitter Ralph Henriquez Jr. changed sides repeatedly in a cat-and-mouse game. Venditte choses to face Conrad right-handed, and retires him on a ground ball to end his turn on the mound, Venditte will start the year with the Class-A Tampa Yankees, where he was 2-0, 2.21 in 21 games last year.

2016: The Detroit Tigers signed Casey McGehee as a free agent.
2016: The Detroit Tigers signed Bobby Parnell as a free agent.

2017: The Detroit Tigers released Collin Balester.
2017: The Detroit Tigers released Mike Pelfrey.

2018: On a wild #OpeningDay, the Tigers rally from 4 runs down in the 9th to tie the game, have a walk-off single by JaCoby Jones in the 10th overturned on review, and lose 13-10 in the 13th: the longest Opening Day game in major league history.

2018: After recording two hits on Opening Day Detroit, Miguel Cabrera finished with his 756th career multi-hit game. That ties him with Tigers Hall of Famer Harry Heilmann and Ted Williams for 54th in MLB history.

2019: In a very rare occurrence, position players take the mound for both teams in the Dodgers' 18 - 5 win over the Diamondbacks. The two teams' bullpens are worn out after playing a 13-inning game the previous night, so with a large deficit in the 7th, Arizona sends back-up catcher John Ryan Murphy to pitch, and he gives up 7 more runs in 2 innings. The Dodgers then ask their own back-up catcher, Russell Martin, to close out the win in the 9th, and he obliges by setting down the side on 10 pitches.

March 31 in Tigers and mlb history:

1909: The National Commission rules that players who jump contracts will be suspended for five years. Players joining outlaw organizations will be suspended for three years as punishment for going outside organized baseball.

1942: The Washington Senators purchased Bobo Newsom from the Detroit Tigers for $40,000.

1962: The Pacific Coast League proposal to use a designated hitter is voted down 8-1 by the Professional Baseball Rules Committee. Prompted by the Cubs' college of coaches, the committee also rules each team must name a manager 30 minutes prior to the game. The DH will not come into major league use until 1973, when it is adopted by the American League.

1968: The American League's new franchise in Seattle, WA chooses the "Pilots" as its nickname. The team will last only one season in Seattle before becoming the Milwaukee Brewers.

1972: The Detroit Tigers traded a player to be named later and cash to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Tom Haller. The Detroit Tigers sent Bernie Beckman (minors) (March 31, 1972) to the Los Angeles Dodgers to complete the trade.

1988: The Detroit Tigers signed Mike Trujillo as a free agent.

1993: Bill White, the first black man to serve as a league president, resigns from his National League post. He will remain at the job until March of 1994.

1994: The Detroit Tigers traded Rico Brogna to the New York Mets for Alan Zinter.
1994: The Detroit Tigers released Jeff Grotewold.

1995: The longest strike action in sports history ends - in a courtroom. A U.S. District court order forbids owners from implementing new financial working conditions in the wake of the impasse in negotiations. The court decides that conditions will revert to the old rules from the previous season. Because of the timing of the court order, 18 games will have to be trimmed from the major league schedule.

1996: The American League unveils its new colorful red polo shirts for the umpires, part of the "What a Game" campaign to lure fans back to the parks. The last sartorial change was in the 1970s when AL umps wore red blazers for several years. National League umpires will stick with traditional blue.

1996: For the first time in major league history, the regular season opens in March with the Seattle Mariners beating the Chicago White Sox in 12 innings, 3 - 2, at the Kingdome. Five Mariners pitchers strike out 21 batters, with Randy Johnson collecting 14 Sox in seven innings.

1996: The Detroit Tigers signed Curtis Pride as a free agent.

1998: In their first game ever, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays lose to the Detroit Tigers, 11 - 6. Pitcher Wilson Alvarez takes the loss for Tampa while third baseman Wade Boggs hits the first home run in team history and drives in three runs.
Tampa Native, Luis Gonzalez hits a home run to right field, the first home run ever hit at Tropicana Field.

1999: Commissioner Bud Selig confirms that discussions are underway which could lead to advertising space being sold on the sleeves of players uniforms. Nothing will come of these, fortunately.

2000: Workers put the finishing touches Comerica Park in preparation for its opening game on April 11.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DZOsoTTW4AAIbq8.jpg

2001: The Detroit Tigers released Eric DuBose.

2004: The Detroit Tigers released Esteban Yan.

2006: The Detroit Tigers released Reggie Taylor.

2009: The Detroit Tigers surprisingly cut slugger Gary Sheffield, who is one home run shy of 500 for his career. Sheffield, a 9-time All-Star, is 25th on the all-time home run list and 27th in RBI (1,633). He only hit .178 in spring training, but went deep in 5 of 45 at-bats. He says he is not shocked, but is surprised. Marcus Thames will replace Sheffield as Detroit's starting DH.

2011: The Yankees are successful on opening day, beating Detroit, 6 - 3, at home. Curtis Granderson, whose health was a concern before the start of the game because of a strained right oblique muscle, makes a diving catch of a line drive hit by Will Rhymes in the 1st, then breaks a 3 - 3 tie with a solo homer off Phil Coke in the 7th. Mark Teixeira had earlier hit a three-run blast to tie the score in the 3rd.

2014: With the majority of teams opening their season today, expanded instant replay is used for the first time in a major league game.

2014: Tigers walk off on an Alex Gonzalez single on #OpeningDay.

2016: The Detroit Tigers released Luke Carlin
2016: The Detroit Tigers released John Mayberry.

2017: The Detroit Tigers signed Bryan Holaday as a free agent.

OPEN MIKE!
Totally Tigers

It?s the last Sunday of the month, folks, which means it?s your day! This is the day for you to be heard. Today is the one day during the month (normally) where you get the opportunity to comment on the Tiger topic of your choosing.

This is the one day of the week where we open up the comment parameters for you, so you can really get those juices flowing. Comments on THIS DAY ONLY can be expanded to a maximum of 8 sentences. So, pick a topic and let us hear from you. What?s on your minds?

The centerpiece of the Justin Verlander trade has been shut down for 4-6 weeks with shoulder tendonitis. Franklin Perez is the Tigers #4 ranked prospect according to Baseball America, #6 by Baseball Prospectus, and #5 by Fangraphs, while MLB.com has the hard-throwing righty the highest at #3.

Separate instances of a lat strain and shoulder soreness limited his 2018 to only 7 appearances between two levels, topping out with a 7.94 ERA across four starts for High-A Lakeland ? where he hoped to return to start 2019.

The 21-year-old Venezuelan boasts a power heater that consistently reached 98 mph when he could stay on the field this spring, but health is the focus for Perez for the time being. Perez is one of three right-handers who make up the core of Detroit?s farm, along with Matt Manning and 2018?s #1 overall draft pick Casey Mize.
