Norris delivers positive signs, if not a win.
Pitching line isn't pretty, but lefty is looking like a reliable starter.

Athletics 7, Tigers 2: A?s extend Tigers? losing streak to five games.
Poor defense, rough middle innings from Norris, and Frankie Montas? mastery doomed the Tigers.

May 18 in Tigers and mlb history:

1905: The Detroit Tigers selected Tom Doran off waivers from the Boston Americans.

1907: Ty Cobb has 4 hits with 2 doubles. The Tigers come back from a 4-0 deficit to beat the A's 15-8.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DdKRJWhV4AEOAu0.jpg

1912: The Detroit Tigers use a team of replacement players against the Philadelphia Athletics. With 19 players on strike in protest of the recent suspension of Ty Cobb, manager Hughie Jennings recruits college players and a number of local semipro players to avoid a forfeit and fine. Detroit loses to the Athletics 24 - 2, as pitcher Al Travers gives up all 24 runs on 26 hits.

1933: The first All-Star Game is announced for July 6th at Comiskey Park.
It will be played as part of the Chicago World's Fair celebration and is sponsored by the Chicago Tribune. Fans will pick the players.

1937: Brooks Robinson is born in Little Rock, Arkansas. The perennial Gold Glove third baseman will make his debut with the Baltimore Orioles in 1955. In 1964, Robinson will win the American League MVP Award. Six years later, his defensive brilliance will lead the Orioles to a World Series victory.

1939: The Detroit Tigers selected Bud Thomas off waivers from the Washington Senators.

1946: The Tigers acquire George Kell from the Philadelphia A’s for Barney McCosky. Kell wins the 1949 batting title and makes five All-Star teams in seven seasons with Detroit, becoming the greatest third baseman in franchise history.

1955: At Fenway Park, the Cleveland Indians score 11 runs in the 5th inning to beat the Boston Red Sox, 19 - 0, and give Herb Score an easy win over Willard Nixon. The big blow in the inning is a grand slam by Vic Wertz. It is the worst shutout pasting ever by Boston and the most runs ever in a shutout for the Indians.

1956: Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees hits home runs from both sides of the plate for the third time in his career, setting a major league record. Mantle includes a perfect 4 for 4 day, helping New York to an 8 - 7 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

1958: Cleveland Indians outfielder Carroll Hardy pinch-hits for Roger Maris and responds with his first major league home run, a three-run shot off Billy Pierce, to give Cleveland a 7 - 4 victory over the Chicago White Sox. With the Boston Red Sox, Hardy will pinch-hit for Ted Williams on September 20, 1960, and will also pinch-hit for rookie Carl Yastrzemski on May 31, 1961, making him the only player to go in for both future Hall of Famers.

1959: Jim Bunning pitches and bats the Tigers to a 14 - 2 beating of the red sox at Fenway Park. Bunning pitches the complete game and also homers and triples to knock in 5 runs.
Al Kaline, Charlie Maxwell, and Frank Bolling also hit homeruns in the Tigers 16 hit attack.
I was at this game with my Dad.

1964: Trailing 6-4 in the 9th inning in Washington, the Tigers score 3 runs on doubles by Gates Brown and Norm Cash and win 7-6.

1968: Frank Howard of the Washington Senators ties an American League record by hitting a home run in his sixth consecutive game. With a pair of home runs against Detroit Tigers ace Mickey Lolich, Howard now has 10 homers in his last six games, also an AL record.

1969: Rod Carew of the Minnesota Twins steals second base, third, and home plate during the 3rd inning of an 8 - 2 loss to the Detroit Tigers.
Carew pulls off the trifecta against the battery of Mickey Lolich and Bill Freehan. Carew becomes the first player in 28 years to steal three bases in sequence in the same inning.

1981: The Detroit Tigers released Duffy Dyer.

1982: Larry Herndon of the Detroit Tigers hits three home runs in an 11 - 9 win over Oakland, and in the process becomes the 14th player in major league history to hit home runs in four consecutive plate appearances.
On May 16th, he homered in his final at-bat to give the Tigers a 7 - 6 victory over Minnesota.

1984: Tigers 8 - A's 4: Tigers are 30-5.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CixtgNvUUAAfVCV.jpg

1999: Edgar Martinez hits three home runs, tying a major league record with five homers in two games, to give the Seattle Mariners a 10 - 1 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Martinez homered twice in the opener of the series.

2004: The Detroit Tigers signed Jimmy Haynes as a free agent.

2004: At the age of 40, Randy Johnson becomes the oldest pitcher in major league history to throw a perfect game, retiring all 27 hitters to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks over the Atlanta Braves, 2 - 0. It is the 17th perfect game in major league history and the first since David Cone of the Yankees did it against Montreal on July 18, 1999.
Johnson also joins Cy Young, Jim Bunning, Hideo Nomo and Nolan Ryan as the only pitchers to throw no-hitters in both leagues, and creates the longest time span between no-no's, having first accomplished the feat against the Detroit Tigers in June of 1990.

2012: Justin Verlander makes a bid for the third no-hitter of his career, but falls two outs short, in beating Pittsburgh 6 - 0. Josh Harrison singles with one out in the 9th against the Tigers' ace for the Bucs' lone hit.
Verlander, who strikes out 12, is now 16-2 for his career in interleague play.

2014: Miguel Cabrera hits an RBI single and Victor Martinez homers him home to lead the Tigers to a 6-2 win, their 17th in 21 games, giving them a 7-game lead in the AL Central.

2016: Justin Verlander notches his 2,000th strikeout in Tigers 6 - 3 win over twins.

2016: The Detroit Tigers released Humberto Quintero.

THE SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

The Tigers have been struggling to find starting pitchers ? having to resort to bringing them up from AA and also using an ?opener.?
Which explanation best describes what is going on?

1. This is what happens during a rebuilding process.
2. Not enough depth in the farm system.
3. Those bad contracts to oft-injured pitchers started it all.
4. Can?t help or control all those injuries.
5. The training and conditioning of pitchers appears not to be doing its job.
6. All of the above.
7. Something else.

May 19 in Tigers and mlb history:

1906: Rube Waddell's no-hitter is broken up by Ty Cobb's bunt single.

1910: Cy Young wins the 500th game of his career as the Cleveland Naps beat the Washington Senators, 5 - 4, in 11 innings. He is the only pitcher in major league history to ever reach this milestone.

1918: Happy Finneran sent from the Detroit Tigers to St. Paul (American Association).

1933: For the first time in major league history, brothers on opposite teams hit home runs in the same game. Boston Red Sox catcher Rick Ferrell homers off his brother Wes Ferrell in the 2nd inning, but the Cleveland Indians pitcher returns the favor as he homers in the 3rd on a pitch called by his sibling. It is the only time that the Ferrell brothers homer in the same game.

1946: The Boston Red Sox purchased Pinky Higgins from the Detroit Tigers.

1948: The Detroit Tigers released Doc Cramer.

1956: At Forbes Field, Dale Long of the Pittsburgh Pirates hits a 9th-inning home run in a 7 - 4 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Long will hit home runs in each of his next seven games, establishing a major league record for home runs in consecutive games.

1962: Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals becomes the National League career hits leader. The 41-year-old has a 9th-inning single for his 3,431st hit and moves past Honus Wagner. "The Man" finishes his career with 3,630 hits, 1,815 at home, and 1,815 on the road.

1963: Bill Bruton of the Detroit Tigers ties a major league record by collecting four doubles in a 5 - 1 win vs. the Senators. Bill Faul pitches a 3-hitter in his first career start. Curiously, Bruton will total only 21 doubles on the season.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DAM4yUtVwAAwUx3.jpg

1965: Denny McLain pitches his first career shutout and the Tigers beat the senators 4- 0.

1968: After hitting 10 home runs in six consecutive games, establishing a new major league record, Frank Howard of the Washington Senators is stopped by Detroit Tigers pitcher Earl Wilson, who defeats the Senators, 5 - 4, in the first game of a doubleheader.

1968: In the second game of a doubleheader, Al Kaline hits a two-run homer off Washington's Steve Jones to become the Tigers' all-time home run leader, surpassing Hank Greenberg. Detroit wins, 7 - 0, completing a sweep.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DdLGs6HW0AIeaU1.jpg

1970: The lawsuit filed by former St. Louis Cardinals All-Star Curt Flood against Major League Baseball begins its hearing in federal court. Judge Irving Ben Cooper presides over the case, which will reach the Supreme Court and result in the upholding of baseball's reserve clause.

1979: After a bitter six-week strike, the major league umpires return to work. During the work stoppage, the men in blue were replaced by amateur and minor league arbiters.

1984: Tigers beat the A's 5 - 4 and improve to 31-5.

1989: Lou Whitaker hits a 2-run homer with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th to beat the royals 2 - 0 at #TigerStadium.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DANXx0LUIAAmLc2.jpg

1989: The Detroit Tigers purchased Rick Schu from the Baltimore Orioles.

1989: The Detroit Tigers released Chris Brown.

2009: Dontrelle Willis wins his first game in 20 months and his first in a Detroit Tigers uniform as the Tigers shut out the Rangers, 4 - 0. Willis retires 17 batters in a row at one point and snaps the Rangers' seven-game winning streak.

2013: Miguel Cabrera hits three homers for the second time of his career, but it's not enough as Texas beats Detroit, 11 - 8. Daniel Murphy hits a three-run homer in the 6th inning for Texas, to negate Cabrera's 4-for-4, 5 RBI night. In his other plate appearance, the Rangers walk Miggy to load the bases, but Prince Fielder follows with a three-run double.

2014: The Tigers see their 11-game road winning streak ended after a very long day. Having been delayed in leaving Boston, MA, they arrive in Cleveland only three hours before game time, then extend the game when J.D. Martinez hits a pinch homer in the 9th to require extra innings.
However, Michael Brantley hits a walk-off homer off Al Alburquerque in the 10th to end the game, 5 - 4.

Ron Gardenhire sees silver lining despite Detroit Tigers sixth-straight loss.

Gardenhire sat with Tigers quality control coach Joe Vavra and watched just how many pitches their hitters were chasing out of the zone.
?One of the things we saw, we swung out of the zone something like 36 or 38 times,? Gardenhire said before Saturday afternoon?s game against the Athletics. ?That?s not good.?
