Tigers record by starters.

TIGERS OVERALL RECORD EXCEEDS PYTHAGOREAN RECORD
Usually when a team allows more runs that it scores it has a losing record. You can use the runs scored and allowed to show how a typical team would do with those statistics. You can see this on sites that show MLB standings as X W-L or Pythagorean Wins and Losses. Right now the Tigers Pythagorean record is 60-63.

The Tigers have winning records in all types of relatively close games 1-run games, 2-run games and 3-run games. This explains why the Tigers have a winning record (65-58) despite allowing more runs than they have scored. It does not show the underlying reason. 20 of the close victories go to Scherzer and Verlander, however, while another 20 are split among the other starters. So there might be something to the pitch-deep-into-the-game theory. (Pitch-deep-into-the-game sounds nicer than middle-relief-is-awful.)

Tigers not expected to make many callups September 1.
DETROIT -- With just-optioned Andy Dirks expected back in Detroit once rosters expand on Sept. 1, the Tigers seemingly have the potential to make several September callups for the home stretch.
Most likely, however, they'll stick to their plan of making a few strategic moves for depth purposes.
"I don't think there'll be many callups," manager Jim Leyland said.
Teams can call up anyone on their 40-man roster Sept. 1 without having to make a return move to make room. Leyland and team president/general manager Dave Dombrowski will likely discuss those possible moves in the coming days.

Inge and Fister help Tigers crush indians 10 - 1.
from detroittigertales

Since Fister and Porcello don't get a lot of strikeouts, it's important to put a good defensive infield behind them. I have to think that Fister feels more confident with Inge and Ramon Santiago behind him than Wilson Betemit and Ryan Raburn. Perhaps a defensive platoon is in order, that is play Inge and Santiago behind Fister, Porcello and Penny and Betemit and Raburn behind Scherzer and Justin Verlander. It need not be a strict platoon but getting the good glove men behind the ground ball pitchers makes sense.

Avila reached base five times on a single, double and three walks. After slumping in the heat and humidity of July, he is batting a sizzling .442/.524/.788 in August.
