July 16 in Tigers and mlb history:

1853: The New York Clipper publishes what is believed to be the first tabulated boxscore of a baseball game. The Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of New York defeated the Gotham Club, 21 - 12, on July 5th.

1887: Shoeless Joe Jackson was born. A brilliant baseball career cut short by the 1919 Chicago "Black Sox" scandal.

1897: At the age of 45, Chicago's Cap Anson becomes the first major leaguer to amass 3,000 hits when he singles off Baltimore's George Blackburn.

1901: In Cleveland, Boston's Cy Young notches his 12th straight win, staggering to a 10 - 8 victory over the Blues.

1903: The New York Highlanders traded Paddy Greene to the Detroit Tigers for John Deering.

1907: Ed Walsh sets another major league record for fielding chances for pitchers, handling 12 assists and three putouts in a 13-inning game.

1909: At Bennett Park, the Tigers and Senators play the longest scoreless game in American League history.
Ed Summers pitches the complete game, holding the Nationals to seven hits, two walks (one intentional), while fanning 10. The Nationals' 30-year-old rookie, Bill "Dolly" Gray, allows only one hit before leaving with an injury after eight innings. He is replaced by Bob Groom. Gray will put another entry in the record books next month when he walks seven straight batters. The 0 - 0 contest is called after the 18th inning. Ed Summers Game Score of 126 is the highest ever recorded by a Tigers pitcher.

1914: The Tigers, minus Ty Cobb who is nursing a sore thumb, knock out rookie Babe Ruth in the 4th inning and trip the Red Sox, 5 - 2. It is Ruth's first loss.

1922: George Sisler drives in the first run with a sacrifice fly against Walter Johnson and the Browns top the Senators, 2 - 0.

1940: The Detroit Tigers purchased Bob Uhl from Dallas (Texas).

1941: The Chicago Cubs purchased Frank Jelincich from the Detroit Tigers.

1941: Joe DiMaggio singles off Al Milnar in the 1st inning to extend his hitting streak to 56 games. He has three hits in the game as the Yankees beat the Indians, 10 - 3 in Cleveland. DiMaggio's streak will be snapped tomorrow night.

1948: There are three managerial changes today. Ben Chapman is fired by the Phillies (though owner Bob Carpenter insists he was "not fired" saying "I'd like to make it clear that there is a difference between firing a man and concluding business with him.") and Dusty Cooke takes over on an interim basis. Eddie Sawyer, with no major league experience as a player or manager, will get the job after Cooke goes 6-6.
But the big news is from New York. The Giants remove Mel Ott and replace him with Leo Durocher, who obtains his release from Brooklyn.
The Dodgers bring back mild-mannered Burt Shotton, who replaced Durocher once before. In a newspaper poll over the winter, an overwhelming majority voted for the gentlemanly Shotton to replace The Lip.
The changes today portend those at the end of the season: Bucky Harris of the Yankees, Ted Lyons of the White Sox, and Steve O'Neill of the Tigers will be released.

1950: Major League players connect for 37 home runs today for a new record. Leading the offense is Cincinnati with two wins over the Giants, 16 - 4 and 11 - 10.
In the American League, the Red Sox and Indians hit seven home runs in their doubleheader split: Moose Dropo collects three homers.
Arguably the most memorable of today's record-breaking home run total comes off the bat of career bench player Ted Beard, helping his cellar-bound Bucs salvage a split with the still contending Braves. At 5 foot, 8 inches, en route to a career .285 slugging percentage (albeit in the midst of his career year, with 4 HR, 12 RBI, and an OPS of nearly .700), Beard launches one over Forbes Field's 86-foot high right field grandstand roof, just the second time in the grandstand's 25-year existence this feat has been accomplished, its sole predecessor being Babe Ruth's final major league home run on May 25, 1935.

1951: While in Detroit, the Yanks option rookie Mickey Mantle to Kansas City (AA). Mantle, plagued with strikeouts - 3 on the 13th - and in a slump, will go 0-for-22 in his start with the Blues, before ending with a tear at .361. The Yankees will recall him on August 20th.

1952: Walt Dropo gets two more hits, giving him 15 in four games, which ties the American League record.

1956: A group headed by Fred Knorr and John Fetzer buys the Detroit Tigers and Briggs Stadium for a record $5.5 million.

1960: Tigers beat the Yankees 3-2 on a Rocky Colavito RBI single in the bottom of the 8th.

1961: Detroit regains first place with two complete game victories from Phil Regan and Don Mossi.
Homeruns by Al Kaline and Don Mossi in the 11 to 1 win over the Kansas City Athletics. Then in the second game, homeruns by Rocky Colavito and Norm Cash lead Detroit to an 8 - 3 win. The Tigers have a record of 58 and 31.

1971: Vida Blue boosts his record to 18-3 with a one-hit, 4 - 0, victory over Detroit. Tony Taylor's single in the 4th is the only hit.

1975: Commissioner Bowie Kuhn is reelected for a 7-year term.

1976: Mark Fidrych pitches an 11-inning complete game for his 10th win. #Tigers win 1-0 on a Willie Horton's walk-off single.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DEsvxOEWAAAisSe.jpg

1984: Tigers beat the White Sox 7 - 1. Glenn Abbott with the CG 5 hitter. Kirk Gibson with a 3 run homer.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CnRFuq6W...jpg&name=small

1985: At the All-Star Game Lou Whitaker forgets his Tigers jersey, buys a replica from stadium gift shop, w/ "1" added in Magic Marker.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D_nRjZiXkAITwL9.jpg
In the 1985 All-Star Game, the National League beats the American League, 6 - 1, at Minnesota's Metrodome for its 13th win in the last 14 All-Star Games.

1990: Alan Trammell hits walk-off HR to give Tigers 5-4 win over whitesox at Tiger Stadium.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DiAEN27WsAMYfEf.jpg

1994: Detroit defeats Kansas City 13 - 7. Travis Fryman's grand slam powers the Tigers.

1997: The San Diego Padres traded Earl Johnson (minors) to the Detroit Tigers for Dave Hajek.
1997: The San Francisco Giants traded Marcus Jensen to the Detroit Tigers for Brian Johnson.

1998: The Detroit Tigers released Joe Oliver.

2002: Damion Easley ties a major league record by getting hit by a pitch 3 times in one game in a loss to the red sox.

2003: At the age of 77, Minnie Minoso becomes the first player to play professional baseball in seven decades. The Cuban native, who had a 16-year big league career which ended in 1964 (with brief resumptions in 1976 and 1980), walks as the designated hitter for the St. Paul Saints against the Gary SouthShore RailCats in independent Northern League action.

2006: Chipper Jones collects an extra-base hit for the 14th consecutive game, tying the major league record held by Paul Waner for 79 years.

2012: The Detroit Tigers signed Danny Dorn as a free agent.

2013: The American League wins the All-Star Game, 3 - 0, over the National League, as batters from the senior circuit only manage three hits.
Mariano Rivera, who has announced his retirement at the end of the season, is named the MVP.

2017: Miguel Cabrera draws a walk-off bases loaded walk in the 11th inning and the Tigers beat the blue jays 6 - 5.

2019: Four Indians pitchers combine on a one-hitter in an 8 - 0 win over the Tigers. Reliever Tyler Clippard allows the sole hit, a single by Nicholas Castellanos in the 5th. Rookie Zach Plesac starts the game and allows just one walk in three innings, but has to give way to the bullpen after a rain delay of 2 hours and 7 minutes. Nick Goody and Tyler Olson, with two innings of work each, are the other two pitchers in the feat.

2021: After a year and a half of wanderings, the Blue Jays receive permission to reintegrate their normal digs at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, ON starting on July 30th. This is thanks to soaring vaccination rates in Canada, and the easing of restrictions on public gatherings. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Jays had been forced to play their home games either on the road, or in temporary homes in Buffalo, NY and Dunedin, FL. The Jays then celebrate the good news by defeating the Rangers, 10 - 2, hitting five homers in the process, two of them by Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

The 2023 MLB Amateur Draft has now concluded and the Detroit Tigers selected 21 players.

Many believed that the Tigers would have chosen Wyatt Langford who was ranked #3 by many. But they selected Max Clark who recently was ranked #4. Clark is considered to be a 5-tool player who is ideally built for Comerica National Park.

Which brings us to the question:

Is it better for a team to draft the overall best-ranked player available or should a team draft a player ranked somewhat lower but may be a better fit for the organization?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can also respond to other readers.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

Is it better to draft the top-ranked player available or to draft a player who is a better fit?

1. Draft the highest-ranked player.

2. Draft the player who is a better fit.

Trevor May Has Favorite Miggy Moments.

Trevor May is a Miguel Cabrera fan. Moreover, he has some favorite Miggy moments. I learned as much when I caught up to the always-engaging 33-year-old right-hander on the Sunday leading into the All-Star break.

?I got my first jersey from another player in our last series,? said May, who broke into the big leagues with the Minnesota Twins in 2014 and now plays for the Oakland Athletics. ?We were in Detroit and I got a Miggy Cabrera jersey signed. I?m not a huge memorabilia guy, but he was my first, ?Oh wow, I?m in The Show.? It was like, ?That?s Miguel Cabrera in the box!? He?s one of the greatest of this generation.?

Nine years later, both players are nearing the end of the line. Cabrera, whose career has him Cooperstown-bound, is set to retire after this season. May, whose accomplishments have been far more humble, faces an uncertain near-term future. He has a 5.32 ERA in the current campaign, as well as a career-low 17.0% K rate.

May?s post-playing-days future is media-focused, and he?s already begun establishing himself in that realm. The Longview, Washington native has been an active podcaster and streamer ? gaming is a noteworthy interest, Pat McAfee a notable influence ? and just this past week he was part of MLBNetwork Radio?s All-Star Game coverage. His newly-signed jersey is ticketed for his home studio. As May explained, ?the background has been kind of sparse, and I wanted to make sure that baseball has a spot there, along with all the nerdy stuff I?m into, whenever I?m in front of the camera.?

May has pitched in front of ballpark cameras many times, and while that includes more than two dozen appearances against the Detroit Tigers, a few of his Miggy moments likely weren?t captured. Even if they were, they went unnoticed by the vast majority of viewers.

?I?ve gotten a thumbs up from Miggy after a good slider for a strikeout,? said May. ?That was in 2019, in a save situation ? I remember being really dialed in ? and that?s like the Holy Grail for a pitcher. To get a nod? Austin Pruitt actually got one from him the other day. He threw a good sinker that Miggy fouled off, and got a nod. He?s never going to forget that. That?s one my favorite thing about Miggy; he gives guys credit, which a lot of hitters don?t do. It?s awesome.?

Another of May?s Miggy moments took place five years earlier, during his 2014 rookie season. He?d given up a home run to the future Hall of Famer the previous day, and during a lull in the action ? the Twins were making a pitching change ? he heard his name called while sitting in the dugout.

?Anthony Swarzak had started for us,? recalled May. ?Torii Hunter was on second and Miggy was on first. Torii came over ? they were talking to the first base coach ? and Miggy said, ?Hey, May!? I said, ?Me? Are you talking to me?? He said, ?Changeup. Nasty. I couldn?t see it yesterday.? He?d taken me deep the day before on a slider, so then he goes, ?The slider. No.? That was a Miggy moment for me. Miggy is great. He?s definitely a favorite.?

July 17 in Tigers and mlb history:

1902: The Detroit Tigers signed Erve Beck as a free agent.

1903: Rube Waddell is arrested for assaulting a fan who had criticized his pitching. Connie Mack bails him out of jail.

1906: The Cubs beat back the Giants, 6 - 2, as Three-Finger Brown tops Christy Mathewson. Joe Tinker's two-run homer in the 6th is the big blow for Chicago. The loss drops the Giants to 6 games behind the Cubs.

1908: In another classic match-up, Three-Finger Brown and Christy Mathewson pair off with Brown winning, 1 - 0.
The Cubs pitcher allows 6 hits, with Matty giving up 7. The only run comes on a 5th-inning inside-the-park home run by Matty's nemesis, Joe Tinker, who runs through the arms of third base coach Heinie Zimmerman to score. In the 12 match-ups between the two pitchers, Brown has won eight. A tragic occurrence happens during Tinker's home run dash when a boy, standing on the roof of a nearby building to view the game, falls 50 feet to his death.

1908: It is Honus Wagner Day in Pittsburgh, as players from both teams line up to pay homage. Wagner's tribute was originally scheduled for the 16th, but Honus asked that it be moved a day so it does not conflict with the annual benefit picnic for orphans. Wagner is presented with a $700 gold watch. Pittsburgh beats Boston, 4 - 0.

1914: At Forbes Field, Rube Marquard and Babe Adams each go a marathon 21 innings before Larry Doyle's two-run home run gives the Giants a 3 - 1 win over the Pirates. Adams yields no walks and 12 hits, the longest non-walk game in major league history. Marquard walks two (one intentionally) and yields 15 hits.
In the 6th, Honus Wagner goes from first to third base on a hit by Jim Viox. When New York CF Bob Bescher throws to 3B Milt Stock, the ball bounces out of his hands and disappears. Wagner scores before it's discovered that the ball bounced up under his arm and stayed there as he ran home. Wagner is called out for interference, and the Bucs protest. Manager Fred Clarke is then ejected by umpire Bill "Lord" Byron. In a fitting ending to this unusual game, Giants OF Red Murray is knocked unconscious by a bolt of lightning after catching a fly ball for the final out. Murray is uninjured. Marquard's win is his last in 1914. He will lose 10 straight on his way to a 12-22 record.

1917: Hall of Famer Lou Boudreau was born this day in Harvey, IL.

1922: At Boston, Ty Cobb gets five hits (and a walk) in a game for the 4th time this year, setting an American League mark. His previous 5-hit contests were on May 7th, July 7th, and July 12th. Only Willie Keeler has done it before.
The Tigers roar, 16 - 7. overcoming a 5 - 0 deficit after one inning.

1934: Babe Ruth draws his 2,000th base on balls at Cleveland. He will retire with a walk record of 2,062. Rickey Henderson will break the record.

1936: Carl Hubbell starts his 24-game winning streak, beating Pittsburgh, 6 - 0. The Giants hit a National League record-tying four triples in the 1st inning: Jo-Jo Moore, Mel Ott and Hank Leiber hit them in succession, and Eddie Mayo adds one later in the inning to equal the major league record.

1936: Yankees Red Rolfe, Lou Gehrig and Bill Dickey hit 3rd-inning home runs against Detroit to tie the American League record, since topped. New York rolls, 9 - 4, dropping the Bengals to 4th place. Goose Goslin has a pair of homers for Detroit.

1941: In front of more than 60,000 fans at Cleveland, Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak is ended at 56 games. Indians P Al Smith and Jim Bagby Jr., plus sensational plays by 3B Ken Keltner, stop the Yankee Clipper, but New York edges the Indians, 6 - 5. Leaving the ballpark after the game, Joe tells Phil Rizzuto that his failure to register a hit cost him $10,000, as Heinz Ketchup (?57 Varieties?) was prepared to sign an endorsement deal with him.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F1PJ9nmXwAEOX49?format=png&name=900x900

1942: The Detroit Tigers purchased Jack Wilson from the Washington Senators.

1947: Less than two weeks after Larry Doby's debut with the Indians, Hank Thompson and Willard Brown become the second and third black players in the American League and first for the Browns. The former Kansas City Monarchs standouts will play in less than 30 games for St. Louis because their presence does not significantly raise attendance.

1950: Yankee rookie Whitey Ford wins his first major league game, beating the visiting White Sox, 4 - 3. Tom Ferrick finishes for New York.

1954: With Jim Gilliam (2B), Jackie Robinson (3B), Sandy Amoros (LF), Roy Campanella (C) and Don Newcombe (P) in the starting lineup against the Braves, the Dodgers field the first team which consists of a majority of black players.
The historic five helps Brooklyn beat Milwaukee at County Stadium, 2 - 1.

1955: Earl Torgeson of the Tigers steals home in the 10th to beat the Yankees 6 - 5.

1959: In a dispute with the umpires, Cleveland manager Joe Gordon is ejected. Cleveland OF Minnie Minoso refuses to stand in the batter's box until the argument is over. Umpire Frank Umont calls him out on strikes. The enraged Minoso charges Umont and gets the thumb also. The Indians win, 8 - 7, to stay on the heels of Chicago.

1960: Frank Lary gets win as Tigers beat Yankees 12-2. Lary the "Yankee Killer": 27-10 mark vs NY 1955-61.
Al Kaline draws four walks in four plate appearances.

1961: Following a year-long illness, Ty Cobb succumbs to cancer at age 74 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DE8WacEXcAAtcY0.jpg

1961: Commissioner Ford Frick decrees that Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs in a 154-game schedule in 1927 "cannot be broken unless some batter hits 61 or more within his club's first 154 games."

1962: Sandy Koufax leaves after one inning of a 7 - 5 loss at Cincinnati. The 14-game winner has a circulatory problem in the index finger and palm of his pitching hand and will be sidelined until late September.

1974: Cardinals pitching great Bob Gibson fans the Reds' Cesar Geronimo to become the second hurler after Walter Johnson to strike out 3,000 batters. Geronimo will become Nolan Ryan's 3,000th strikeout victim six years later. The Reds shrug it off, scoring six runs in the 1st inning and three in the 2nd on their way to a 12 - 7 win.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F1MzKnxWwAATima?format=png&name=360x360

1976: Walter Alston wins his 2,000th game as Dodger manager.

1979: The National League wins its 8th straight All-Star Game, 7 - 6, at Seattle. Lee Mazzilli homers to tie the game in the 8th, and walks in the 9th to bring in the winning run. Dave Parker, with two outstanding throws, is named the game's MVP, and Pete Rose plays a record 5th All-Star position. The Red Sox provide the starting OF for the American League in Jim Rice, Carl Yastrzemski, and Fred Lynn, though Yaz has played 1B most of the season.

1984: Tigers 3 - White Sox 2. Tigers score 3 in the first, including a 2-run home run by Darrell Evans. Dan Petry gets his 12th win, Willie Hernandez his 17th save. Tigers improve to 62-28 with their 5th straight win #Relive84

1987: Yankees first baseman Don Mattingly becomes the first American League player to hit a home run in seven consecutive games.

1989: The Detroit Tigers traded Bill Bean to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Steve Green (minors) and Domingo Michel (minors).

1990: Minnesota becomes the first team in history to turn two triple plays in the same game. Both are started on grounders to 3B Gary Gaetti, who has started five of the Twins' last six triple killings. The Twins' triple killings aren't enough as the team loses to the Red Sox at Fenway Park, 1 - 0.

1991: Rob Deer homers in the 10th inning at Tiger Stadium to give the Tigers 6 - 4 win and their third straight walk-off win in a sweep of Texas.

2000: The Detroit Tigers traded Gabe Alvarez to the San Diego Padres for Dusty Allen.

2006: The Detroit Tigers signed Brian Boehringer as a free agent.

2009: Jim Thome drives in a career-high 7 runs with a grand slam and a three-run home run as Chicago defeats the Orioles, 12 - 8.

2012: The Tigers are shut out for the first time in 364 days in a 13-0 throttling by the Angels.

2016: Jarod Saltalamacchia hits a walk-off two-run home run to right field off RHP Joakim Soria as the Tigers defeat the Kansas City Royals 4-2.

2018: The American League defeats the National League, 8 - 6, in the 89th edition of the All-Star Game, played at Nationals Park in Washington, DC. A record ten home runs are hit, including a pair in the 10th inning, by teammates Alex Bregman and George Springer of the Astros off Ross Stripling, as the AL wins its 6th straight and 18 of the last 21 (with one tie) to edge ahead of the NL overall. Bregman is named the winner of the Ted Williams Award as the game's MVP.

2021: The Seattle Mariners returned Will Vest (earlier draft pick) to the Detroit Tigers.

2022: Second-generation players take the first two spots in the 2022 amateur draft as SS Jackson Holliday, son of Matt Holliday, goes first overall to the Orioles, while OF Druw Jones, son of Andruw Jones, is selected second by the Diamondbacks. P Kumar Rocker, who had been the #10 pick in 2021 but had failed to come to an agreement with the Mets following a disagreement over the health of his pitching arm, goes #3 to the Rangers, who sign him mere hours after his selection. Rocker is coming off a brilliant stint of pitching in the independent Frontier League.

2022: The Detroit Tigers released Chase Anderson.
