MLB Network?s Jon Morosi reports that Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter is drawing significant trade interest, but that Detroit is expected to hold onto the lefty slugger. The 25-year-old Carpenter has done nothing but hit since reaching the majors late last season, with a .257/.317/.493 slash line in 312 career plate appearances that?s good for a wRC+ of 125. Carpenter has shown particularly prodigious power, with 17 homers despite only half a season?s worth of trips to the plate. Given his offensive success, it?s hardly a surprise that Morosi notes the Tigers see Carpenter as part of the club?s future. Riley Greene, Tarik Skubal, Matt Manning, and Spencer Torkelson are among the other young pieces already in the majors who could be key factors in the club?s eventual return to contention.

July 24 in Tigers and mlb history:

1863: Hall of Famer Tommy McCarthy was born this day in Boston, MA.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F1wU6FjWcAAlQef?format=jpg&name=360x360

1901: In a baseball rarity, the Pittsburgh Pirates score in every inning, a major-league record of course, defeating the Reds, 11 - 2. Deacon Phillippe is the winner over Jesse Tannehill, who will be his teammate next year.

1905: Tigers workhorse George Mullin surrenders his first over-the-fence home run in two years and 15 days.
He won?t give up another one until July 2, 1910.

1911: An American League All-Star team plays the Naps in Cleveland, raising $12,914 for the late Addie Joss's family. The All-Stars win, 5 - 3. Joe Wood and Walter Johnson pitch for the All-Stars, while Cy Young twirls for the Naps.

1926: Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth demonstrate that power hitting is not the only thing they can do when Lou scores on a double steal with the Babe in a victory over the White Sox.

1933: Frank Frisch is appointed manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, replacing Gabby Street.

1938: 44-year-old Babe Ruth, roughly three years into his retirement and currently first base coach for the Brooklyn Dodgers, launches one 430 feet out of Sportsman's Park to win the $50 grand prize in a pre-game distance-hitting contest featuring an otherwise active pool of contestants including Cardinals Joe Medwick (the runner-up at 425 feet), Johnny Mize and Don Padgett, as well as Brooklyn's Dolph Camilli and Ernie Koy.

1939: The Detroit Tigers release oft-injured Dixie Walker. He signs with Brooklyn, with whom he will have his most productive year.

1958: After yesterday's Kansas City spitting episode, Boston's Ted Williams, for the second time in less than two years, is fined for his transgression, though in this instance by the league rather than his own GM, and for the relatively painless sum of $250 rather than the somewhat draconian $5000 extracted from the "Splinter" on August 7, 1956. Upon being informed of the league's decision, Teddy delivers this heartfelt apology: "I'm sorry I did it. I was so mad at the park that I lost my temper and afterward I was sorry about it. I'm principally sorry about losing the $250."

1961: In an unusual mid-season exhibition match at Yankee Stadium, the San Francisco Giants beat their former cross-town rivals, 4 - 1. Mickey Mantle's homer accounts for the only Bronx Bombers run and Willie Mays has two RBIs for the visiting "Jints". 50,000 fans are on hand.

1961: At Kansas City, Detroit P Frank Lary collides with rookie 3B Steve Boros, and both players leave the game with injuries. Lary does not miss a start but Boros's collarbone is broken and he will not return. He has 53 RBIs to date.

1964: Hank Aguirre gives up five runs on three homers to New York in the first four innings, but the Tigers overcome a 5 - 2 deficit to win 10 - 5. Late 2 run homers by Jerry Lumpe 2B, and "Mr. Everything" Al Kaline RF, his a deep blast to left center gets the win for the Tigers and relief pitcher Larry Sherry.
Kaline hits another 2-run homer in Game 2 of a doubleheader, but the Tigers lose 6-3.

1965: Tigers win 7-4 over the whitesox on home runs by Norm Cash, Al Kaline, and Bill Freehan.

1967: Tigers announce they are moving 2 games with the Orioles to Baltimore after civil unrest in Detroit.

1968: Two eighth inning pinch hit singles turned a 4-3 Washington lead into a 5-4 Tigers lead. Jon Warden then saved Denny McLain's 19th victory as Detroit won the opener of this three game series in the Nation's Capitol, 6-4.

1968: Hoyt Wilhelm's 907th game breaks Cy Young's record for major league pitching appearances, but he loses a 2 - 1 decision to Oakland.

1970: Chicago's Bill Melton ties the major-league record by striking out seven times in a doubleheader split with Detroit. Melton will strike out his first three times up in his next game, in Baltimore on the 28th, before flying out in the 9th.
The Sox win the opener today, 5 - 2, with six straight singles and five runs in the 9th. The Tigers win the nitecap, 5 - 4, in the 9th when Don Wert draws a walk from Wilbur Wood with the sacks full.

1970: For the 4th time in his career, Billy Williams has the only hit(s) for the Cubs, as he connects safely twice against the Braves' Phil Niekro. Each time previously, Williams also had multiple-hit games to spoil no-hitters. Niekro coasts to a 9 - 0 victory over Fergie Jenkins.

1973: Although not selected, Willie Mays appears in the All-Star Game thanks to Commissioner Bowie Kuhn increasing the player limit so the "Say Hey Kid" can participate in the Mid-summer classic. Mays strikes out in his final All-Star appearance. The National League wins, 7 - 1. A record 54 players are used, including Catfish Hunter, who sustains a fractured thumb that will sideline him for four weeks. The A's ace has a 15-3 record at the time.

1983: In the memorable "Pine Tar Game" at Yankee Stadium, George Brett hits an apparent 2-run home run off Rich Gossage to give the Kansas City Royals a 5 - 4 lead with two outs in the 9th inning, only to have the homer taken away when Yankees manager Billy Martin, at the urging of coach Don Zimmer, points out that the pine tar on Brett's bat handle exceeds the 17 inches allowed in the rules. As a result, Brett is called out for illegally batting the ball, giving New York a 4 - 3 victory. Brett goes ballistic and the Royals immediately protest. American League President Lee MacPhail overrules his umpires for the first time, saying that the umpire's call went against the spirit of the rule, which should be rewritten and clarified, and that the home run will stand. The game will be resumed from that point on August 18th.

1983: Detroit's star shortstop Alan Trammell has his only 5-for-5 day in the Tigers 4 - 3 win over the angels.

1984: Tigers beat the indians 9 - 5. Milt Wilcox gets his 10th win. Tigers get home runs from Lou Whitaker, Kirk Gibson, and Dave Bergman. Tigers are 11-2 coming out of the All-Star break, improve to 68-29.

1987: Lou Whitaker hits a home run and a double to give the Tigers a 6-3 win over the Angels. Tigers are 2 games behind the Yankees in the AL East.

1993: The Detroit Tigers signed Storm Davis as a free agent.

1993: at Tiger Stadium: Travis Fryman, Rob Deer, & Mickey Tettleton each hit 3-run home runs in a 20-4 romp over the A's.

2001: The Yankees edge the Tigers 6 - 5, despite an 8th-inning moon shot by Detroit's Juan Encarnacion, off Ramiro Mendoza, that lands in the second row of the empty blue bleacher seats in left CF. It is believed to be the first ball hit into that area since Yankee Stadium was remodeled in 1976.

2002: The Detroit Tigers selected Erik Sabel off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

2002: The Tigers shut out the Royals 3 - 0, in one hour and 41 minutes - the fastest 9-inning game in the major leagues since 1984.

2011: 2B Roberto Alomar, P Bert Blyleven and GM Pat Gillick are inducted into the Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Cooperstown, NY. The day has special significance for fans of the Toronto Blue Jays as both Alomar and Gillick had their greatest success with the Jays' back-to-back World Series-winning teams in 1992 and 1993.

2012: The Yanks make history by becoming the first team since the 1927 Athletics to have three players (Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Eddie Collins) with 2,500+ career hits in the starting lineup. New York uses Rodriguez, Derek Jeter and the newly-acquired Ichiro Suzuki to pull that off.

2013: The Detroit Tigers signed Jair Jurrjens as a free agent.

2016: Ken Griffey, Jr. and Mike Piazza are inducted into the Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Cooperstown, NY. Griffey obtained the highest percentage of the vote ever - 99.3% - in being elected in his first year of eligibility by the BBWAA, while Piazza made it on his fourth try. A crowd estimated at 50,000, the second-largest ever at Cooperstown, is on hand to witness the event.

2020: Every Tiger's player will wear No. 6 in 2020 to honor the late legendary Al Kaline who passed away April 6 of this year.

The others, all deceased, are represented by relatives - Gil Hodges, Minnie Minoso and Buck O'Neil - while Dave Winfield introduces 19th century black baseball pioneer Bud Fowler. Over 35,000 people are present in Cooperstown, NY to witness the ceremony, and Dominican flags and Boston Red Sox gear, in honor of Ortiz, are well in evidence in the crowd.

July 25 in Tigers and mlb history:

1905: Christy Mathewson wins his 16th, defeating the Reds, 7 - 2. The game is close until Frank Bowerman belts a three-run homer in the 8th for the Giants. Cincy fans get a scare in the 1st inning when Reds catcher Ed Phelps is knocked unconscious when he is struck by the back swing of Sam Mertes. Phelps is rushed to a hospital.

1908: With the Highlanders leading the Tigers 3 - 2 in the 8th, Detroit scores two runs on a Ty Cobb triple. With lefty Claude Rossman the next hitter, New York's new manager Kid Elberfeld moves righty pitcher Jack Chesbro to 1B and replaces him with first baseman Hal Chase. Chase allows a fly ball that scores Cobb, then goes back to 1B and Chesbro resumes his spot on the mound. It is Chase's only pitching appearance as the Tigers win, 5 - 3.

1916: Tigers' Harry Heilmann dives into the Detroit River to save three people from drowning.

1916: Tris Speaker has three hits against lefty Babe Ruth to finally drive him from the mound in the 8th inning. Reliever Rube Foster wild pitches home a run and Braggo Roth's second double gives Cleveland a 5 - 3 lead. The Tribe wins it, 5 - 4, with Ruth the loser. Ruth is 2 for 4 with a two-run single.

1918: Walter Johnson gives up one hit (a triple by George Sisler) in the first 11 innings of a 15-inning, four-hit, 1 - 0 win.

1921: Max Carey flags down 11 flies in centerfield in the Pirates' 6 - 3 win over New York, tying three others for the National League record.

1921: The Detroit Tigers released Eddie Ainsmith.

1930: The A's pull off triple steals twice in one game against the Indians. Al Simmons, Bing Miller, and Dib Williams are the base thieves in the 1st inning, and Mickey Cochrane, Simmons, and Jimmie Foxx steal together in the 4th.

1936: The Red Sox tally 20 hits to crush the Tigers, 18 - 3, scoring all their runs in two big innings. The Sox score six in the 2nd to drive Tommy Bridges from the mound, then tally 12 more in the 5th; it is the second time this month that the Red Sox have scored more than 10 runs in an inning. Doc Cramer has four Boston hits, while three others have three hits. Lefty Grove gives up nine hits in the easy win.

1941: Forty-one-year-old Lefty Grove wins his 300th game as the Boston Red Sox defeat the Cleveland Indians, 10 - 6, before a Fenway Park Ladies Day crowd of 16,000. Though he will make six more starts, this will be Grove's last career win.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F14YGUnWcAI9ExI?format=png&name=small

1944: The Detroit Tigers released Charlie Metro.

1948: In the tight four-team American League race, Joe DiMaggio leads the Yanks to a sweep over the White Sox, 5 - 3 and 7 - 3. Joe D is 3 for 3 in the first game to back Ed Lopat, then adds a triple and two doubles in the nitecap. His three RBIs in game two gives him an AL-high 86.
In Boston, the other DiMaggio, Dom, makes two spectacular catches against the Indians as well as homering off Satchel Paige. The Red Sox beat Cleveland, 3 - 0, for their 15th win in 16 games. Joe Dobson tops Steve Gromek to leave the Sox percentage points ahead of the 2nd-place A's. Cleveland and New York are each 1 1/2 games back. With the Braves in 1st place, it is the first time since 1916 that both Boston teams are at the top spot.

1951: Ouch!! Willie Mays's oft-recalled bare-handed grab of left-handed Rocky Nelson's screaming opposite field line drive takes place in Forbes Field in the 1st inning of a 5 - 4 Giant loss to Pittsburgh. Mays runs to the left-center corner of the bullpen (also known as Greenberg Gardens, or Kiner's Corner), about 410 feet from the plate. At the last minute, the wind gets a hold of Nelson's slicing shot and starts pushing it back towards right. Mays looks up and locates the ball but too late to adjust. As he will recall on June 3, 1957, after robbing Roberto Clemente on a shot to almost the same spot, "I couldn't get my glove around. So I just stuck my bare hand up and the ball stuck."

1959: Against Detroit, Yankee first baseman Moose Skowron reaching for a wide throw, collides with Tiger runner Coot Veal. Skowron's arm is broken in two places and he is out for the rest of the season. Marv Throneberry will fill in at 1B. The Yanks win, 9 - 8, when Yogi Berra hits a home run in the 9th with Mickey Mantle on. Prior to the Yogi home run, Bobby Richardson and Fritz Brickell hit their first major league homers for New York. Berra's home run erases five Yankee errors, three by 3B Hector Lopez.

1961: With his four-home run performance in the doubleheader sweep over the White Sox, Roger Maris moves 25 games ahead of Babe Ruth's 1927 pace. The Yankee slugger now has 40 for the year and will finish the season with a record 61 round trippers.
Mickey Mantle also homers off Frank Baumann in the first game. He ends the day with 38 home runs.

1962: Stan Musial becomes the National League's all-time leader in runs batted in with 1,862, driving in both of the Cardinal runs in a 5 - 2 loss to the Dodgers.

1966: Red Sox great Ted Williams and Casey Stengel are inducted into the Hall of Fame. In his induction speech the "Spendid Splinter" makes a strong appeal for the inclusion of Negro League stars at Cooperstown.

1967: Race riots in Detroit force postponement of a Tigers-Orioles game. The games scheduled for the 26th and 27th are shifted to Baltimore.

1982: Lou Whitaker hits 2 triples. The Tigers beat Texas 7-6 on a walk-off single by Enos Cabell in the bottom of the 9th.

1982: Steve Carlton pitches his 50th career shutout, a 1 - 0 five-hitter against the Dodgers and Jerry Reuss.

1990: For the second time in his career, George Brett hits for the cycle, as Kansas City beats Toronto, 6 - 1.

1991: A jersey once worn by Yankees Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle is sold for $71,500 at an auction in Manhattan. A Ty Cobb tobacco card brings in $62,700.

1993: Detroit P Mike Moore hurls a one-hit, 3 - 0 shutout over the Royals. Wally Joyner's 2nd-inning single is the only Kansas City safety.

1998: Former Yankees P Jim Bouton makes his first appearance at Yankee Stadium since 1970 at Oldtimers Day and is greeted with cheers all around. Bouton had been persona non grata in New York since writing Ball Four, which broke a long-standing taboo in sports by taking readers into the locker room and revealing players' extracurricular escapades. The Yanks invited the Bulldog back after his son wrote a Father's Day article in the New York Times suggesting it.

1999: The Tigers defeat the Red Sox, 9 - 1, as 1B Tony Clark homers from both sides of the plate for the second time this season.

1999: Nolan Ryan, Robin Yount, George Brett, Nestor Chylak, Orlando Cepeda, Frank Selee and 'Smokey' Joe Williams are enshrined in the Hall of Fame.

2002: The Los Angeles Dodgers traded Hiram Bocachica to the Detroit Tigers for a player to be named later and Tom Farmer (minors). The Detroit Tigers sent Jason Frasor (September 18, 2002) to the Los Angeles Dodgers to complete the trade.

2010: The Detroit Tigers released Billy Buckner.

2010: In a ceremony held in Cooperstown, NY, outfielder Andre Dawson, manager Whitey Herzog and umpire Doug Harvey are inducted into the Hall of Fame. During his acceptance speech, Dawson urges the election of former teammates Tim Raines and Lee Smith.

2016: In the 20th season of interleague play since its launch in 1997, the last remaining possible match-up occurs, as the Padres visit Toronto for the first time ever, meaning that every team has now visited every other major league team at least once. The Jays win the game, 4 - 2, behind Aaron Sanchez, who records his 10th straight win, the first Blue Jays pitcher to do so since Roy Halladay in 2003. Alex Dickerson hits a two-run homer for the Padres in the 9th, extending the team's record streak of games with at least one home run to 23.

2017: Miguel Cabrera gets his 2,600th career hit.

2019: The Detroit Tigers signed Jake Thompson as a free agent.

2020: The Detroit Tigers selected Carson Fulmer off waivers from the Chicago White Sox.

2020: The Tigers play their season opener. C.J. Cron homers in his Tigers debut, but it's Detroit's only run in a loss in Cincinnati.

2022: The Detroit Tigers signed Jacob Barnes as a free agent.
