July 29 in Tigers and mlb history:

1901: At the Polo Grounds, Boston's Kid Nichols and Christy Mathewson square off for a ten-inning shootout, with Boston prevailing, 5 - 4. Matty gives up 11 hits in bringing his record to 15-11.

1910: White Sox OF Patsy Dougherty breaks up Detroit's Ed Summers's no-hitter. Ty Cobb scores from second on an infield single, and the Tigers and Summers win it 1 - 0. It is the fourth time in his 10-year career that the .284 hitter has ruined someone's no-hitter.

1911: At Boston's Huntington Avenue Grounds, 'Smokey' Joe Wood of the Red Sox whiffs twelve Browns en route to a 5 - 0 no-hitter.

1919: At Navin Field, Dutch Leonard decides to pitch around Braggo Roth with two outs in the 9th inning to face Babe Ruth. Although the Boston slugger, who has already reached the Detroit southpaw with two doubles, responds by tying an American League record with his ninth home run of the month and sixteenth of the season, the Tigers prevail, 10 - 8.

1922: The Detroit Tigers purchased Ken Holloway from Augusta (South Atlantic) for $8,000.

1928: The Indians score eight in the 1st and nine in the 2nd in a 24 - 6 win over the Yankees at home. Johnny Hodapp of the Indians becomes the first American League player to get two hits in an inning twice in a game. He strokes 2 singles in both the 2nd and 6th innings of the game. The Yankees' lead shrinks from 11 1/2 games to 6 in one week.

1931: The Detroit Tigers purchased George Quellich from Reading (International).

1938: In a postgame radio interview with Bob Elson, Jake Powell of the Yankees will make headlines with remarks about "beating up #*&**rs and then throwing them in jail" as part of his off-season duties as a policeman. For the statements, Judge Landis suspends Powell for 10 days.

1945: The West wins the 1945 East-West Game, 9 - 6, as Bill Williams drives in four and Archie Ware three. Verdell Mathis picks up two hits and tosses three hitless, scoreless innings for the victory. The West leads 9 - 0 after four due to poor pitching performances from Tom Glover and Bill Ricks.

1954: The Detroit Tigers selected Hoot Evers off waivers from the New York Giants.

1955: At Crosley Field, Smoky Burgess hits 3 home runs and drives in nine runs as the Redlegs rout the Pirates, 16 - 5.

1958: Ted Williams hits his 17th career grand slam, tying him for 2nd place with Babe Ruth, and behind Lou Gehrig, who had 23. Williams also adds a three-run homer, as Boston beats Detroit, 11 - 8.

1962: Don Drysdale pushes his record to 19-4 as he completes a three-game Dodger sweep over the Giants, winning, 11 - 1. Frank Howard has a home run and three singles to drive home five runs. Willie Mays accounts for the only Giants run with a home run.

1964: Gates Brown's 2-run home run in the bottom of the 8th gives the Tigers a 3-2 win over the White Sox.

1968: Denny McLain appears on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

1970: Hank Aaron cracks two home runs and drives in five runs to lead the Braves to a 9 - 7 come-from-behind win over the visiting Cardinals.

1972: Brooks Robinson hits a two-out home run in the 11th to give Baltimore a 4 - 3 win over the Indians.

1974: Detroit hits four home runs in the first inning in an 8 - 2 win over the Indians. Al Kaline, Bill Freehan and Mickey Stanley hit consecutive home runs off Fritz Peterson, and Ed Brinkman adds another later in the inning, off Steve Kline.

1983: Due to a dislocated thumb caused by a collision at home plate trying to score in the first game of a doubleheader against the Braves, Padres 1B Steve Garvey's consecutive game streak ends in the nightcap at 1,207.

1984: Tigers 3 - Red Sox 0. Milt Wilcox tosses a gem, allowing 3 hits and 0 walks in 8 innings. Ruppert Jones' triple is the game's only XBH. Tigers (70-32) get their 70th win.

1986: Sparky Anderson, the first manager to win the World Series in each league, also becomes the first manager to win 600 games in both the National and American Leagues when his Tigers beat the Brewers 9 - 5. Sparky will manage the Tigers for 17 years total and become the All-Time winningest manager in the Tigers franchise with 1,331 Wins.

1990: At Detroit, the Red Sox bang out 12 doubles, setting an American League record, in a 13 - 3 win over the Tigers. Wade Boggs has 3, while Tim Naehring, Jody Reed and Ellis Burks each have 2. Greg Harris wins easily. The previous AL record was 11, set on July 14, 1934 by Detroit against New York. The 12 two-baggers will be tied in 1996 by Cleveland.

1993: The Houston Astros selected John Hudek off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

1998: The Detroit Tigers signed Ramon Santiago as an amateur free agent.

2002: The text of the letter signed by 40 Hall of Famers and sent to baseball commissioner Bud Selig and union head Donald Fehr urges all sides "to protect the game we all love and have given so much to, we suggest you agree to a qualified mediator that will allow you to find the common ground necessary to avoid a work stoppage" is released.
The former outstanding players, who include Reggie Jackson, Willie Mays and Warren Spahn, believe another work stoppage would be a terrible mistake.

2007: Major League Baseball sets a single-day attendance record as 717,478 fans show up for 17 games. It easily breaks the 640,412 record set on July 3, 1999.

2007: Ichiro Suzuki collects the 1,500th hit of his major league career, a single off of Lenny DiNardo. It comes in his 1,060th game. Only two players - Al Simmons (1,040) and George Sisler (1,048) - have accumulated 1,500 hits in fewer games.

2007: Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr. are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

2008: Ichiro Suzuki raps the 3,000th hit of his career, combining the major leagues (1,722) and Japan's Pacific League (1,278). Isao Harimoto was the only player to collect 3,000 or more hits in Nippon Pro Baseball, putting Ichiro second all-time in hits by a Japanese player in top-tier baseball leagues.

2013: The Houston Astros traded Jose Veras to the Detroit Tigers for a player to be named later and Danry Vasquez (minors). The Detroit Tigers sent David Paulino (September 13, 2013) to the Houston Astros to complete the trade.

2017: John Hiller throws out the first pitch at Comerica Park.

2018: The Hall of Fame inducts one of the largest classes in its history before a crowd of more than 50,000 in Cooperstown, NY. Honored are Vladimir Guerrero, Trevor Hoffman, Chipper Jones, Jack Morris, Jim Thome and Alan Trammell, four of them having been elected by the BBWAA and Morris and Trammell by the Veterans Committee.

2023: The Rangers acquire P Max Scherzer from the Mets in return for IF Luisangel Acuna, the brother of the Braves' Ronald Acuna.

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

Now that the Tigers have entered the 2nd half of the season, we have enough information to make some evaluations about the players.

Almost everyone believes that Riley Greene is becoming a very special type of player. Thus his performance so far has more or less been meeting our high expectations.

But what about the others? Are there players who have pleasantly surprised us? Players we expected would be performing at a lower level? Player who are now doing better than we thought?

Miguel Cabrera is a shell of his former self due to chronic injuries that no longer allow him to hit for power. After an extremely rough start to the season, he hit .304 in June and .303 in July. He continues to methodically work his way up the 3,000 hit club ladder.

Kerry Carpenter is 1 of the leaders in extra-base hits and currently has the team?s best slash line. He is also slowly improving in the outfield.

After Greene and Carpenter, Matt Vierling has the best OBP and is the Tigers? best defensive player. He was acquired by the Tigers over the winter. He is expected to eventually take over the CF slot with Greene moving to a corner position.

And finally, there is Spencer Torkelson. Brought up too early last year, he struggled through 2022 and much of 2023. His stats have improved. His BA of .232 and OBP are not among the highest of the team, but he does lead everyone in HRs and RBIs, partially due to his positioning in the heart of the order.
Which of these 4 have pleasantly surprised you the most?

Which Tiger has pleasantly surprised you the most so far this year?

1. Miguel Cabrera

2. Kerry Carpenter

3. Spencer Torkelson

4. Matt Vierling

1909: After winning 13 in a row, Christy Mathewson loses to Pittsburgh, 3 - 1, giving up four hits and three runs in the 1st inning. Red Ames relieves in the 2nd. Mathewson's record is now 15-3.

1917: The Tigers' Ty Cobb, Bobby Veach, and Ossie Vitt follow each other in the lineup, each going 5 for 5 in a 16 - 4 win over Washington. Having three players collect five hits ties the major-league record for the century. Cobb also scores five times.

1923: Harry Heilmann goes 0-for-4 to lower his batting average below .400, to .397. He will next reach .400 in late September, and finish the season at .403 to win the batting title and deny Babe Ruth the Triple Crown.

1933: Cardinal pitcher Dizzy Dean sets a modern major league record striking out 17 Cubs. Teammate catcher Jimmie Wilson also sets a new mark recording 18 putouts.

1936: The Yankees, with Jake Powell back in CF for the injured Myril Hoag, drop a 5 - 4 decision to Detroit. On August 1st, Powell will go to LF, with Joe DiMaggio playing CF for the first time. George Selkirk will return to RF. The Yanks loses today when Charlie Gehringer ties the match with a two-run homer in the 8th. Bill Dickey allows a ball to get by him in the 10th and Jack Burns scores the winner. Schoolboy Rowe pitches 10 innings for the win over Johnny Broaca.

1938: Hank Greenberg ties a Babe Ruth record with his ninth home run of the week. Jewish teammate Harry Eisenstat pitches scoreless innings in both games of the doubleheader to earn two wins.
Eisenstat took the field at the Tiger Stadium closing ceremony in 1999.

1939: Hank Greenberg scores five runs in a game for the only time, helping the Tigers pummel the A?s 14-0.

1940: The Detroit Tigers purchased Tuck Stainback from the Brooklyn Dodgers.

1951: Joe DiMaggio makes a rare mental error against Detroit, catching a Steve Souchock fly ball in deep CF and, thinking it's the third out, begins trotting in. It's only the second out, and George Kell scores from second base to make the score 4 - 2 in the eighth. Despite the lapse, the Yanks win, 5 - 4, with DiMaggio knocking in the winning run in the ninth.

1951: Ty Cobb testifies in front of Congress denying the reserve clause makes 'peons' out of baseball players.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DF029edXcAIQIfo.jpg

1952: Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick sets a waiver rule to bar inter-league deals until all clubs bid with the club lowest in the league to get the first pick. He sets the price at $10,000. He also bars all other deals after July 31st.

1959: In his ML debut, Willie McCovey goes 4 for 4 with 2 triples off Robin Roberts to lead the Giants to a 7 - 2 win over the Phils. McCovey was hitting .372 with 29 home runs at Phoenix when promoted.

1961: Al Kaline's longest hitting streak peaks today at 22 games. Kaline bats 31 for 84 .369, Slugs .619, 22 Runs, 9 2B, 4 Hr's, 10 RBI.

1962: After mysteriously disappearing off the team bus to use the restroom three days ago and trying to fly to Israel, pitcher Gene Conley returns to the Red Sox and is fined $2,000. Yesterday, he sent a telegram to manager Mike Higgins explaining he was tired and had other plans.

1962: Homers by Leon Wagner, Pete Runnels and Rocky Colavito power the American League past the National League, 9 - 4, in the second All-Star Game of 1962.

1968: In the 1st inning, Washington SS Ron Hansen turns the 8th unassisted triple play in major league history and the first in 41 years. Cleveland's Joe Azcue hits a liner to Hansen, who steps on second base to double Dave Nelson, and tags Russ Snyder sliding into second base for the third out. Hansen's effort is not enough, as Washington loses, 10 - 1.

1969: Using five homers, the Braves thrash the Phils, 6 - 3, in the first game of a twinbill. Felipe Alou and Hank Aaron homer and Bob Tillman, hitting .187, hits three in a row. Aaron's blast is the 537th of his career and moves him past Mickey Mantle on the all-time list. The Phils win the nitecap, 4 - 3. Dick Allen homers in the 2nd inning and follows a Johnny Callison homer in the 8th with his second shot of the game.

1969: It is a bad day for the Mets at Shea Stadium. In the first of two games, Houston scores 11 runs in the 9th inning, eight coming home on grand slams by Jimmy Wynn and Denis Menke, to trounce the Mets, 16 - 3. This is the first time this century in the National League that two grand slams have come in the same inning, with Mets pitchers Cal Koonce and Ron Taylor teeing up the honors. The last time in the American League was July 18, 1962. Taylor also serves up a single to Houston relief pitcher Fred Gladding, the only hit of Gladding's career in 63 at bats and 450 games. The second game is no different as the Astros tally 10 runs in the 3rd inning to thrash the Mets, 11 - 5. Curt Blefary triples with the sacks full and pitcher Larry Dierker (13-8) homers with a man on.

1971: The Detroit Tigers selected Ron Perranoski off waivers from the Minnesota Twins.

1977: The Chicago Cubs purchased Dave Roberts from the Detroit Tigers.

1978: The Expos crush the Braves, 19 - 0, collecting 28 hits and a National League-record-tying eight home runs. Andre Dawson, Larry Parrish, Dave Cash and Dawson again homer in the 4th inning; Parrish has a single and three consecutive home runs in the game, only the third major leaguer to do it. Not till Andres Galarraga in 1995 will another hitter bang homers in three consecutive innings. The 58 total bases break an 85-year-old record held by the Reds. Woodie Fryman conducts the win over Mickey Mahler.

1980: J R Richard is carted off the field after suffering a stroke before an Astros game.

1985: Tigers fans are startled when a pilot swoops his twin engine Lear jet low over Tiger Stadium during a game.
The Michigan man flying the plane has his license revoked by the FAA for flying in a "careless and reckless manner"

1990: In a surprisingly harsh ruling, Commissioner Fay Vincent orders Yankees owner George Steinbrenner to resign as the club's general partner by August 20th and bans him from day-to-day operation of the team for life. The ruling is a result of Steinbrenner's $40,000 payment to confessed gambler Howie Spira for damaging information about since-traded Yankee star Dave Winfield.

1994: Detroit defeats Oakland 14 - 2, as Tiger C Chad Kreuter ties a major league record with three sacrifice flies. He is the 9th player in history to perform the feat.

1995: Mike Schmidt, Richie Ashburn, Negro League star Leon Day, former National League president William Hulbert and Vic Willis are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1998: The Detroit Tigers signed Luis Pineda as a free agent.

2008: The Detroit Tigers traded Ivan Rodriguez to the New York Yankees for Kyle Farnsworth.

2008: Curtis Granderson has 5 hits and Gary Sheffield has 4 in the Tigers 14 - 12 win over the indians in 13 innings.

2008: The Yankees, seeking catching help after losing Jorge Posada for the remainder of the season, acquire Ivan Rodriguez from the Tigers for Kyle Farnsworth.

2009: A story in the New York Times states that sluggers David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez are among the 104 major leaguers who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003. The test results were supposed to be kept secret, but Alex Rodriguez's presence on the list of those who tested positive had already been leaked earlier this year. Ortiz states that he was not aware he had tested positive six years earlier and denies using steroids.

2010: One of the players traded yesterday makes a splash in his debut for his new team. Starting at 3B for the Tigers, Jhonny Peralta homers twice over the Green Monster as Detroit defeats Boston 6 - 5 withstanding a late-game grand slam by David Ortiz. Armando Galarraga's run of bad luck continues as he is hit on the ankle by a line drive off the bat of Kevin Youkilis with a 4 - 1 lead, and has to leave the game one out shy of qualifying for the win. Rookie Robbie Weinhardt relieves him and picks up his first major league victory.

2011: The Seattle Mariners traded Doug Fister and David Pauley to the Detroit Tigers for a player to be named later, Francisco Martinez (minors), Charlie Furbush and Casper Wells.
The Detroit Tigers sent Chance Ruffin (August 17, 2011) to the Seattle Mariners to complete the trade.

2013: As part of a 3-team trade:
The Detroit Tigers sent Avisail Garcia to the Chicago White Sox.
The Detroit Tigers sent Brayan Villarreal to the Boston Red Sox.
The Chicago White Sox sent Jake Peavy to the Boston Red Sox.
The Boston Red Sox sent Jose Iglesias to the Detroit Tigers.
The Boston Red Sox sent Cleuluis Rondon (minors), Frankie Montas and J.B. Wendelken to the Chicago White Sox.

2015: In a whirlwind day of trading, the Blue Jays once again make the biggest splash, acquiring P David Price from Detroit for prospects Matt Boyd, Jairo Labourt and Daniel Norris.

2015: Detroit trades P Joakim Soria to Pittsburgh for IF JaCoby Jones.
2015: The Detroit Tigers traded David Price to the Toronto Blue Jays for Matthew Boyd, Jairo Labourt and Daniel Norris.

2016: Jose Iglesias' walk-off infield single completes a wild comeback with 2 outs in the 9th and gives the Tigers a 3 - 2 win over the astros.

2017: The 2017 class of the Hall of Fame is inducted in Cooperstown, NY.
Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines and Ivan Rodriguez are the three players honored, while executives Bud Selig and John Schuerholz were voted in by the Veterans Committee. The presence of a large number of fans wearing the gear of the defunct Montr?al Expos in honor of Raines cannot be missed among the crowd of 27,000 present for the ceremonies.

2017: Adrian Beltre becomes the 31st member of the 3,000 hit club with a double off Wade Miley of the Baltimore Orioles. The Rangers' third baseman also has over 600 doubles and 5,000 total bases, other numbers that place him high on the list of the game's all-time leaders.

2017: The Cubs obtain C Alex Avila and P Justin Wilson from the Tigers for Jeimer Candelario and Isaac Paredes.

2020: The ripple effects of the outbreak of COVID-19 among the Marlins continue, as two members of their most recent opponents, the Phillies - one coach and one clubhouse attendant - also test positive. Both teams have been idle since completing a three-game series on July 26th, and will also sit out their planned week-end series. Foreseeing that a large number of doubleheaders will be necessary to make up these games, Major League Baseball announces that any twinbill played after August 1st will consist of two seven-inning games.

2021: The Milwaukee Brewers traded Reese Olson (minors) to the Detroit Tigers for Daniel Norris.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers will be sellers once again at this trade deadline and they have 4 clear trade candidates. Eduardo Rodriguez who is widely expected to opt out of his contract and Michael Lorenzen, Chasen Shreve and Jose Cisnero who are on expiring contracts.

All 4 are considered to be rentals, thus lowering their value. They are not expected to receive solid MLB-experienced players in return, nor a team?s top-ranked prospects because of that.

Should the Tigers trade 1 or more of these 4 pitchers, what is your preference for the type of player?

Do you want the Tigers to acquire players with MLB experience who can be plugged into the current roster?

Or would you prefer that they get minor league prospects who can be developed by the Tigers new player development program and also provide depth to the team?

Prospects would most likely be ranked higher than MLB-ready players.

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can also respond to other readers.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

What kind of player would you want the Tigers to acquire by the trade deadline?

1. MLB-experienced players who can join the roster now.

2. Prospects who can be developed and provide depth.
