August 17 in Tigers and mlb history:

1903: Ban Johnson orders betting suppressed at all American League parks, a noble but futile gesture.

1903: The Detroit Tigers released Heinie Smith.

1905: Christy Mathewson pitches his second straight 3 hit shutout against Chicago, this time beating Bob Wicker, 3 - 0.

1907: A match-up of Three Finger Brown and Christy Mathewson attracts a crowd of 20,000 at the Polo Grounds. Matty is unhittable for eight innings, with only a bunt single for the Cubs. But Chicago scores two in the 9th to tie as reliever Jack Pfiester matches Matty for the last three innings. Johnny Kling wins it, 3 - 2, for the Cubs in the 12th with a drive into the LF bleachers.

1909: Walter Johnson gives up four hits in topping the A's Chief Bender in 12 innings. The Nats win, 1 - 0, but the overwork will take its toll on the young ace. He will develop a sore arm and in his next two outings he will give up 27 hits.

1919: The Tigers draw a record 31,500 at home, but lose 4 - 2 to the Senators in 11 innings. Ten ground rule doubles are hit into the crowd lining the outfield.

1923: After 111 games, Babe Ruth is hitting .401 with 31 homers. He'll wind up with his highest batting average, .393. With 205 hits, a major league record 170 walks, and 4 times hit by pitches, Ruth will reach base a record 379 times.

1929: The Yankees buy P Lefty Gomez from San Francisco (Pacific Coast League) for delivery in September 1930.

1933: On his way to establishing the mark of playing in 2,130 consecutive games, Lou Gehrig quietly surpasses Everett Scott's previous record of 1,308 games.

1934: In game 2 of a double header, Schoolboy Rowe pitches a 3-hitter in New York for his 14th consecutive win as the Tigers win 2 - 0.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FaYCuKcW...pg&name=medium

1937: Rudy York, in his first full season as the Tigers? catcher, celebrated turning 24 by contributing a solo HR, a triple, 2 singles, a run & 3 RBI, as the Tigers beat Chicago 11-7.

1940: Jimmie Foxx homers in his 5th straight game as the Red Sox outslug the Senators, 12 - 9. Foxx's feat sets a club record.

1947: The great Hank Greenberg is at-bat in the 2nd inn Forbes Field. C Del Rice & umpire Al Barlick await.

1948: An estimated crowd of 100,000 fans pass by the body of Babe Ruth which is on display at Yankee Stadium.

1948: A day after Babe Ruth dies, Yankee Tommy Henrich hits his fourth grand slam of the season tying one of the Bambino's records. The hit, off the Senators' Sid Hudson, to join Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Rudy York - and, later, Al Rosen and Ray Boone - for the American League record. Henrich, who broke in with the Yankees in 1937, had never hit a grand slam before this season. Bob Porterfield wins for New York, 8 - 1.

1950: In the American League's first Ladies Night Game, the Red Sox top the A's, 10 - 6, at Fenway Park. It is the 19th straight loss for the A's at Fenway Park, stretching back to a win on September 12, 1948. Bobby Doerr hits a first-inning grand slam off lefty Joe Murray in his major-league debut.

1957: Richie Ashburn, known for his ability to foul pitches off, hits spectator Alice Roth twice in the same at bat. The first one breaks her nose, and the second one hits her while she is being removed from her seat on a stretcher. Ironically, she is the wife of Earl Roth, the sports editor of the Philadelphia Bulletin. The Phils win, 3 - 1, over New York.

1966: Willie Mays takes second place on the all-time home run list with a 4th-inning blast off Ray Washburn. San Francisco is one-half game out of first place after beating the Cards, 4 - 3.

1967: The Houston Astros traded Eddie Mathews to the Detroit Tigers for players to be named later.
The Detroit Tigers sent Leo Marentette (December 10, 1968) and Fred Gladding (November 22, 1967) to the Houston Astros to complete the trade.

1968: Tigers win 10-9 over the red sox on a Bill Freehan home run in the top of the 11th in Boston. Norm Cash goes 5-for-6 with a home run.

1969: The Tigers tie a club record with Six Homers, and Denny McLain wins his 19th, beating the A's at Oakland 9 - 4.
Al Kaline homers in the 7th and 9th off relievers, but the first three Tigers homers come off starter Catfish Hunter.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DE8MJsXXcAA-B3g.jpg
In the late 1950's, teammates and opponents started calling nice guy Al Kaline "The Silent Assassin".

1971: Mickey Lolich strikes out 10 in a loss to the white sox, en route to a career-high 308 Ks on the season.

1973: The Detroit Tigers released Rich Reese.

1973 - At Shea Stadium, 42-year old New York Mets outfielder Willie Mays hits the 660th and final home run of his career off Reds lefty Don Gullett.

1977: Heck of a prediction about two Tigers minor leaguers in the Freep Sports section 44 years ago today.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DkzZ8jTU0AAfZUQ.jpg

1980: The Tigers retired Al Kaline's jersey number 6 in a ceremony held between games of a doubleheader against the Texas Rangers, George Kell emceed and also in attendance were Ed Katalinas, who signed the humble man later dubbed Mr. Tiger to a bonus contract off the Baltimore sandlots; Hall of Famer second baseman Charlie Gehringer and Kaline's former teammate, Pat Mullin, who had given him his No. 6 jersey.
The Tigers would retire the numbers of Charlie Gehringer and Hank Greenberg in 1983 & Hal Newhouser in 1997.

1981: Tigers score 12 runs without hitting a home run in a 12 - 2 thumping of the twins. Trammell, Whitaker, and Gibson knock in 8 runs between them.

1984: A U.S. Postage stamp honoring Roberto Clemente is unveiled in Carolina, Puerto Rico - the birthplace of the Pittsburgh #Pirates legend and humanitarian.

1984: At Detroit, the Tigers draw 36,496 to break their attendance mark of 2,031,847 set in 1968. They also top the Mariners 6 - 2, behind Milt Wilcox. Alan Trammell returns to SS for the first time in 39 games and adds two hits.
Tigers get their 80th win.

1989: The Detroit Tigers signed Keith Atherton as a free agent.

2009: The Tigers obtain slugging 1B Aubrey Huff from the Orioles in a trade for Brett Jacobson. Huff is hitting .253 with 13 homers and 72 RBI. Huff will flop with the Tigers batting .189.

Romero in the 8th, breaks a 3 - 3 tie; the Tigers' other run is the result of a 1st-inning homer by the Tigers other big slugger, Miguel Cabrera.

2013: Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers hits a walk-off homer against Aaron Crow in the 9th inning for a 6 - 5 win over the Royals.

2016: The Detroit Tigers signed Pedro Ciriaco as a free agent.

2021: The Detroit Tigers released Buck Farmer.

2021: Shohei Ohtani continues to do it all by himself on the field. Today, he becomes the first hitter in the majors to reach 40 homers this season, and also improves his record on the mound to 8-1 as he pitches 8 full innings for the first time of his career. The Angels defeat the Tigers, 3 - 1.

2021: The Detroit Tigers purchased Dustin Garneau from the Colorado Rockies.

2023: Shohei Ohtani hits a grand slam and the Angels turn a triple play not seen in over 50 years, but the Rays still come out ahead, 9 - 6. With runners on the corners and none out in the 9th, the triple killing that preserves a 6 - 6 tie goes from shortstop to second to first to catcher, with Nolan Schanuel, playing in his big league debut at first base, throwing to C Logan O'Hoppe to nail Yandy Díaz at home to end the inning. The last such triple play had taken place in 1971 and the Halos had not recorded any since 1997. Alas, the Rays score three runs in the top of the 10th to win.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers have started to prepare for the end-of-the year evaluations and preparations for the Hot Stove season. Almost every day, minor league prospects are being DFA?d or re-assigned. Some players are getting promoted within the farm system and soon we can expect that players will be called up to Detroit.

These moves are expected. Scott Harris came in with essentially a clean slate and he and his new hires are putting fresh eyes on everyone they inherited.

We?re also seeing moves being made at the MLB level. Players like Matt Vierling now spending quality time at 3B to see if he may be the solution there for the 2024 season.

At some point in early October, Harris will have his shopping list of needs. Some of his holes will be filled in-house, some by promoting prospects. The rest will necessitate the team going outside the organization and utilizing either trades or signing free agents.

So what do the Tigers need most of all? I?ve got my top 5 list.....

Her top 5

1. VETERAN STARTING PITCHER #1 ? To replace Eduardo Rodriguez who is expected to opt out.

2. VETERAN STARTING PITCHER #2 ? To replace Michael Lorenzen who was traded. Could Lorenzen return?

3. THIRD BASE ? To replace Nick Maton. Could it be Matt Vierling?

4. SECOND BASE ? A number of solid defensive players but no solid bats.

5. LATE INNING RELIEVER ? Someone to replace Jose Cisnero who becomes a free agent. Could a current reliever get promoted to a higher-leverage position?

IMO, that gets us to what they have right now. It doesn't really improve the team at all.
