1904: Christy Mathewson and the visiting Giants top the Reds, 3 - 1, beating Noodles Hahn. Matty drives in one of the three runs scored in the 8th with a single and improves his record to 28-9.

1905: Making his Major League debut, Ty Cobb doubles off Highlander Jack Chesbro in a 5 - 3 Tiger victory at Detroit's Bennett Park.

1912: Earl Hamilton no-hits the Tigers at Navin Field (Tiger Stadium), the first no-hitter in Browns/Orioles history.
Tigers are no-hit but not shut out: Ty Cobb scores after walking, advancing on an error, and coming home on double steal.

1913: The Giants score six runs against Grover Cleveland Alexander, but the Phillies come back from the 6 - 0 deficit to score eight against Christy Mathewson. With two outs in the top of the 9th, and the Phils leading 8 - 6 over New York, umpire Bill Brennan, acceding to a request by the wily John McGraw, orders Phils captain Mickey Doolan (Phils manager Red Dooin had been ejected during the 6-run 6th) to have spectators removed from the CF bleachers, where they are waving hats, newspapers, and handkerchiefs to distract the batters.
When Doolan refuses, Brennan forfeits the game, 9 - 0, to the Giants. Bedlam ensues and later, when the two umpires and Giants players try to board the train at the North Philadelphia Station, they are attacked by fans. The police draw their revolver to control the crowd.
The Phils protest the forfeit and National League president Thomas Lynch will reverse the umpire and rule the game an 8 - 6 Phils win. The Giants then appeal. NL directors say both Brennan and Lynch are wrong, and order the game completed from the point at which it was stopped. The game will be finished October 2nd, with the outcome the same.

1918: The legendary Hall of Famer Ted Williams was born this day in San Diego, CA.
Ted Williams played from 1939 to 1960 and had the highest batting average, most home runs and most RBI’s of any player in MLB during that period. He had a Career MLB Triple Crown…while also serving two wars.

1919: Trailing 7-0 in the 8th inning in St. Louis, the Tigers launch an improbable rally to win 8-7. Starting pitcher Howard Ehmke has 4 hits. The Free Press calls the comeback "the most vicious attack that a Bengal club has ever administered." Ty Cobb hits a home run and a double.

1930: Hack Wilson returns to the Cubs lineup and drives in six runs on his 45th and 46th homers of the year to lead Chicago over the Cardinals, 16 - 4. For August, Hack hits 13 homers and drives in 53 runs.

1934: Tigers beat indians 6-1 to complete a 23-6 August that took them from tied for first place to 5 games ahead of the Yankees, en route to their first pennant in 25 years.

1947: The Boston Braves purchased Bobby Hogue from the Detroit Tigers.

1950: The Tigers drop out of first place for the first time since June 10 when they split a pair with the Senators, losing 3 - 2 in 11 innings, then taking the nitecap, 10 - 8.

1953: The Dodgers rip St. Louis, 20 - 4, with the help of two big innings. Dodger Jackie Robinson fans twice in the 3rd inning, while Gil Hodges walks twice in the 6th. Roy Campanella's five RBIs ties the National League season mark of most RBIs by a catcher (122).

1961: Mickey Mantle connects for home run number 47, off the Twins' Jim Kaat, as the Yanks win, 4 - 0.

1965: Following his doctor's advice, Casey Stengel announces his retirement as manager of the Mets. He will head up Mets scouting in California. Stengel ends a 25-year managerial career that included 10 pennants with the Yankees, followed by a dismal 175-404 with the expansion Mets. The 75-year-old Stengel has been in professional baseball since 1910.

1968: In the showdown in Detroit, 53,575 fans cheer as P Earl Wilson pitches a 4-hit 9 - 1 victory over 2nd-place Baltimore. Wilson adds four RBIs on two hits, including his 5th home run of the year. RF Jim Northrup, and 3B Don Wert have 2 rbi.

1979: The Chicago Cubs purchased Bruce Kimm from the Detroit Tigers.

1984: Jack Morris pitches a 4-hit complete game but the Tigers lose 2-1.

1986: Yankee hurlers Tommy John (43) and Joe Niekro (41) become the first 40+ pitchers since 1933 to start both ends of a doubleheader. John loses, 1 - 0, and Niekro pitches five innings for a 3 - 0 victory over the Mariners.

1995: Tiger teammates Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell tie an American League record by playing in their 1,914th game together, a 10 - 7 loss to the White Sox. The record was set by Kansas City's George Brett and Frank White.
The Tigers teammates will finish their great careers playing 1,918 games together.

2002: The Cincinnati Reds traded players to be named later and David Espinosa (minors) to the Detroit Tigers for Matt Boone (minors), Brian Moehler and cash. The Cincinnati Reds sent Noochie Varner (minors) (August 30, 2002) and Jorge Cordova (minors) (September 24, 2002) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

2002: After marathon negotiation sessions to avoid a players' strike just hours away, Bud Selig announces the players union and owners have reached a settlement on a new four-year Collective Bargaining Agreement without the need for a work stoppage. The new agreement, called "historic" by the Commissioner, gives the owners the economic restraints they wanted as the players are assured no teams will be contracted until the 2007 season, with a revenue-sharing plan to be gradually implemented during the span of the contract.

2007: The St. Louis Cardinals traded a player to be named later to the Detroit Tigers for Mike Maroth.

2017: Justin Verlander gets his first career RBI and his last win as a Tiger in a 6 - 2 win over the rockies.


2019: The autopsy results for Tyler Skaggs, who was found dead in his hotel room a suburb of Dallas, TX on July 1st are released. They reveal that the death was the result of an overdose of opioids, something which has become an epidemic in North America in recent years. Another shocking development is that Skaggs's family alleges that an employee of the Angels was involved in supplying the drugs, something which police is now investigating.

2019: Ten-year minor league veteran Chace Numata is seriously injured in a skateboarding accident in Erie, PA, where he was concluding his season as a catcher with the Erie SeaWolves. He is found unconscious and bleeding from the head in the small hours of the morning by a passing motorist and will die in hospital two days later. According to security footage, his motorized skateboard stopped suddenly and sent him falling forward.

2020: For the first time in major league history, all three of a team's starting outfielders homer twice as the Cubs defeat the Reds, 10 - 1. Ian Happ, Kyle Schwarber and Jason Heyward are the record-setting flychasers.

There is a very good chance this year that the Tigers will end up with less than 90 losses. An improvement over the 2022 season.

However, it is not expected that the team will reach .500 this year. And in win-loss percentage, they rank 11th out of 15 American League teams.

Progress is slowly being seen in less than 1 year with the new Front Office including both player, media and fan acknowledgement that the team is showing improvement under the new regime.

It?s looking more likely that the roster has found its new heart of the order being anchored by Kerry Carpenter, Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson.

But there are still some questions about offense as well as a number of infield positions.

The starting rotation will go into the off-season with a number of vacancies while the bullpen remains fairly strong.

As fans discuss when the Tigers will become viable again, it leads us to thinking about the current 26-man roster.

If the team wants to move forward, how many of these current players will remain as part of the solution?

How many of them will not be here in a year or two?

And will the roster solutions come from within or via free agency?

What about trades? Will the Tigers need to give up someone of value in order to acquire the needed pieces?

These are the questions to ask yourself and others as we ponder just how much the Tigers? roster needs to change. Let?s kick start some good discussion threads here ? and to take with you wherever you go during the rest of the week.

1903: 'Iron Man' Joe McGinnity wins his 3rd doubleheader this month, stopping the Phils twice, 4 - 1 and 9 - 2 and handing losses to Chick Fraser and Bill Duggleby. Iron Joe strikes out nine batters in the opener to win. The two games total three hours and three minutes,

1906: Beset by injuries, the Tigers call 46-year-old Sam Thompson out of retirement; he drives in two runs in a 5 - 1 win over the Browns. Thompson, who last played in the majors in 1898, appears in eight games and bats .226.

1909: The A.J. Reach Company is granted a patent for its cork-centered baseball, which will replace the hard rubber-cored one. This change will be particularly apparent in the National League in 1910 and 1911.

1912: The Red Sox run their record to 87-37 with a 2 - 1 win over the A's. Following the game, Connie Mack says he never realized how strong the Sox were, and concedes the pennant to them. There are 30 games left for Boston.

1935: Hall of Famer Frank Robinson was born this day in Beaumont, TX.

1937: Detroit's rookie Rudy York sets a new record for home runs in a month, hitting his 17th and 18th to eclipse Babe Ruth's mark set in September of 1927. He knocks in seven runs against Pete Appleton as Detroit beats Washington, 12 - 3.

1943: Detroit's Rudy York hits two home runs to bring his August home run total to 17, one less than his 1937 record for home runs in a single month, which he also set in August.

Introducing the HIM metric.

Introduction
Rogelio was awesome and referred to a new metric in his recent Wenceel Perez article that has been in the works. This article is the first of a series and is the explanation of what it is, what it should measure, and a sneak peek at who has what in some of the Tigers minor league organization right now. Without further ado, let?s get into it!

What is it
It?s supposed to be a metric that helps combine how hard a player hits the ball with actual power production. It?s still in it?s infancy and could very well see some changes along the way. Similar to wRC+, 100 is going to be league average. The lowest you will see is 0 since you can?t really have a negative ISO or hard hit rate.

The clever name from Chris is the Hard hit rate ISO Metric, or, HIM.

And here?s the equation being used:
(ISO / league ISO) * (Hard Hit Rate / league Hard Hit Rate) * 100

I?ve got this setup so that it can encompass the season or you can break it down by batted ball type, and it all reads the same.

Though I want to note, like with any sort of metric, this is still somewhat a work in progress. There could be changes along the way to adjust this rankings.

What is it supposed to tell you
It?s meant to show you how above or below average a player is at not only hitting the ball hard, but how productive they are when compared to the rest of the league. This inspiration came from Spencer Torkelson early in the year. So many conversations of how he?s hitting the ball hard, yet we were seeing no results. This should help to show that in one spot.

There is some testing that still needs to be done to see how it?s correlating through the farm system from level to level. As with anything, the larger sample size, the more accurate the results are going to be.

If a player has a 0, it means either their ISO or hard hit rate (sometimes it could be both) is at 0. This was done by design because they usually go hand-in-hand. It?s not very often we see someone with any sort of ISO who isn?t also hitting the ball hard. It?s also not very often we see a player hitting the ball hard and not getting rewarded.

This is the real fun part, right? Right now we have the metric calculated out for Toledo and Lakeland via the data we have been able to gather from baseball savant. So let?s take a look!

1885: Detroit Wolverines C Charlie Bennett hits a grand slam in the 1st inning? leading Detroit to an 8 - 3 victory over the New York Giants. Only two other grand slams are hit this year? one by Dave Orr (New York) and one by Tom Brown (Pittsburgh).

1887: The Detroit Wolverines win their series opener in New York to increase their lead over the Giants to 6.5 games in the National League. Detroit will take 2 of 3 in the series and go on to claim its first and only NL pennant.

1905: Hillerich & Bradsby sign a contract with Honus Wagner to produce the first autographed model bat.

1906: The Detroit Tigers drafted Jimmy Archer from Atlanta (Southern Association) in the 1906 rule 5 draft.

It sets the major league record? later broken? and is still the AL mark for two pitchers. Two batters single, and then Socks Seybold and Danny Murphy hit triples with two outs to end the contest. Philadelphia's Coombs faces 89 batters? striking out a major league record 18 (broken in 1962) and giving up 14 hits? while the Americans' Harris fans 14 and yields 16 hits. Harris drops his record to 2-21? and will start next year at 0-6 before exiting the majors for Providence? holding the distinctions of the worst winning percentage (.091 for a 3-30 record) and the fewest wins for any pitcher with 300 innings pitched. The 24 innings pitched will only be exceeded this century by the 26-inning battle on May 1? 1920 between Joe Oeschger and Leon Cadore. There won't be a longer game in the AL until May 8? 1984.

The Phils' Eddie "Smoke" Stack and Marquard match zeros for 7 innings? but a walk? single and two errors bring home two Giant runs. This is Rube's second one-hitter in a row: his previous start? on August 24? resulted in a two-hitter.

1917: In the bottom of the 1st inning at Cleveland Tris Speaker tries to steal home with Joe Evans batting. Evans swings and lines the ball into Speaker's face. Tiger manager Hughie Jennings allows a courtesy fielder, Elmer Smith, to play CF in the 2nd frame while Speaker has his face stitched. Speaker then returns to CF in the 3rd.

1918: The Browns and Tigers finish the season with a doubleheader split in St. Louis as the Cleveland Indians refuse to make the trip for the Labor Day doubleheader. In Game 2 Ty Cobb pitches 2 innings against the Browns while the Browns' George Sisler pitches one scoreless inning. The Browns win 6 - 2 and Sisler hits a double off Cobb. Detroit wins the opener 7 - 2.

1919: In the first of two Labor Day games? Babe Ruth allows 10 Washington hits? but wins, 2 - 1. Ruth drives home one run with a triple. The win is his last in a Red Sox uniform. In the nitecap? Ruth's 7th-inning homer snaps a 1 - 1 tie as Boston wins? 4 - 1. It is the Babe's 24th homer.

1930: A Labor Day crowd of 72?000 packs Yankee Stadium to see the World Champion A's split with the New Yorkers. The A's take the opener? 3 - 2? with reliever Lefty Grove striking out Babe Ruth with 2 on to end the game. Ruth drives in a run in the nitecap? 2 - 0, Yankee win. Red Ruffing pitches his second two-hitter in two weeks to beat George Earnshaw.

1931: Lou Gehrig hits his third grand slam in five days and his sixth home run in consecutive games when he connects in a 5 - 1 second-game win over the Red Sox. The blast? his 40th of the year? comes in the 3rd inning off Ed Morris. Gehrig connects in the opening 11 - 3 win against Milt Gaston? belting his 39th homer in the 7th inning. Lou finishes the day with 6 RBI and has knocked in 21 runs in the past 6 games.

1934: Jimmie Foxx cracks a two-run homer in the 9th? his 39th? off reliever Lefty Grove? to give the A's an 8 - 7 win over the Red Sox. Foxx? filling it at 3B for the injured Pinky Higgins? has three hits and 4 RBIs.

1936: Detroit's Schoolboy Rowe fires his second two-hit game in 8 days? beating the A's 4 - 1. Rowe beat the Red Sox on August 25th by a 5 - 0 score. Philadelphia is saved from a shutout when Bob Johnson blasts his 22nd home run in the 9th inning. All of Detroit's runs come in a hitless 4th when they use 5 walks? a fielder's choice and error.

1941: Rudy York wallops 3 home runs and drives in 5 runs for the Tigers who beat the Browns? 9 - 5 in game 1 in Detroit. The Tigers rattle 20 hits in the nitecap to win 16 - 8.

1941: At Fenway Park the Red Sox sweep two from the Senators 13 - 9 and 10 - 3. Ted Williams has only 5 official at bats but has 3 hits - all homers - to take over the American League lead from Charlie Keller. Ted walks 4 times.

1945: Detroit's Hal Newhouser wrenches his back pitching against the Indians' Bob Feller. Newhouser leaves the game in the 7th and will stay behind when the team leaves for New York but will rejoin them on the 7th. The Tigers win 5 - 4, behind Jim Tobin and are just 1 1/2 games ahead of the 2nd place Senators.

1954: At Crosley Field the Redlegs' Ted Kluszewski hits 2 home runs to break his own club mark of 40 homers. He will wind up with 49 for the season. Despite the Klu clouts Cincinnati loses to Philadelphia 9 - 3. In a pre-game stunt? Reds catcher Hobie Landrith catches a ball dropped out of a helicopter hovering some 500-600 feet over the field.

1961: The American League's biggest crowd of the year? 65?566? sees Whitey Ford and Don Mossi duel at Yankee Stadium as a week-end battle for first place begins. Two-out? 9th-inning hits by Elston Howard? Yogi Berra? and Bill Skowron give New York a 1 - 0 win over the Tigers.

1964: Masanori Murakami becomes the first Major League player from Japan.

1964: Mickey Lolich begins a consecutive innings scoreless streak of 30.2 innings, 5th best in Tigers history. The streak stops on September 12.

1968: Denny McLain notches his 27th win of the season beating the Orioles 7 - 3. McLain helps the Tiger cause by starting a 3rd-inning triple play.

1970: The Red Sox take an 8 - 1 lead at Fenway Park but Detroit rallies to win, 10 - 9. The Sox take the lead on a Mike Andrews homer and a grand slam by Tony Conigliaro. The Tigers then use the long ball as well? collecting 4 homers? including a grand slam by Jim Price and homeruns from Gates Brown, Norm Cash, Jim Northrup to win. Daryl Patterson is the winner over Sonny Siebert.

1974: During a 5 - 3 win over the Tigers the A's 1B Gene Tenace goes through the entire game without a fielding chance - only the 4th time this century that has occurred at that position. In the same game Detroit's Reggie Sanders homers in his first major league at-bat.

1975: Mets ace Tom Seaver shuts out the Pirates, 3 - 0, and reaches 200 strikeouts for a major league-record 8th straight season.

1975: It is "Bob Gibson Day" in St. Louis? as dignitaries? including August Busch and Bowie Kuhn? honor the 39-year-old pitcher. The Cards? led by Lou Brock? then drill the Cubs? 6 - 3. Brock has 3 singles? 3 stolen bases? and scores 3 times.

1977: The Tigers call up Lance Parrish, Lou Whitaker, and Alan Trammell from the minor leagues.

1980: Tigers OF Al Cowens and White Sox reliever Ed Farmer publicly end their long-running feud by shaking hands at home plate prior to Chicago's win at Tiger Stadium. The feud began in 1979 when Farmer broke Cowens' jaw with a pitch? and flared again this June 20th when Cowens hit a ground ball off Farmer and attacked the pitcher instead of running to first base. Cowens was suspended for 7 games and a warrant was issued for his arrest in Illinois? forcing him to skip the previous week's Tigers-White Sox series in Chicago. Farmer agreed to drop the charges in exchange for a handshake? and the two players bring out the lineup cards before today's game.

1983: The Detroit Tigers signed Bob Molinaro as a free agent.

1984: Tigers lose their 4th straight out west to fall to 87-49, Blue Jays win to cut the Tigers' lead to 8.5 games.

1984: The Detroit Tigers traded a player to be named later and cash to the Cincinnati Reds for Bill Scherrer. The Detroit Tigers sent Carl Willis (September 1, 1984) to the Cincinnati Reds to complete the trade.

1995: The Detroit Tigers released Mike Gardiner.

2006: The Detroit Tigers sent Nook Logan to the Washington Nationals as part of a conditional deal.

2012: Tigers beat the White Sox 5-1 to cut their lead to one game. Delmon Young goes deep, Max Scherzer pitches 8 scoreless innings.

2019: Justin Verlander pitches the third no-hitter of his career as the Astros defeat the Blue Jays, 2 - 0. Verlander issues only one walk in pitching the complete game, and is only the sixth pitcher to have performed the feat three or more times. It is the second time that the Jays are his victims, making him only the third pitcher to no-hit the same team twice.



2020: The Sad News came that Tom Seaver had Passed Away at 75 yrs old.
