On this episode: With Evan away this week (congratulations Evan and Savannah!), Mark brings on "Locked On Tigers" host Scott Bentley to talk Detroit Tigers injuries and more. Mark and Scott break down what aspect of Javier B?ez's swing needs work during the offseason. Later, the duo discuss what Scott Harris should have his eyes on as we look towards the 2024 season.

September 12 in Tigers and mlb history:

1900: The Reds commit 17 errors in a doubleheader at Brooklyn, losing 7 - 2 and 13 - 9, the most errors in one day by any team in the 20th century.
Iron Man McGinnity closes both games for Brooklyn; he has worked in every game for a week.

1908: New York tops the Superbas, 6 - 3, for a sweep of the five-game series with Brooklyn. The Giants score four in the 8th, including a long triple by Christy Mathewson, to put the game away.

1908: A day after beating the A's Eddie Plank, 2 - 1, Washington's Walter Johnson is forced to start again, this time replacing sore-armed Charlie Smith. Remarkably, Johnson records his 5th complete game victory in nine days.

1911: Ty Cobb has 3 hits, including a triple in the 13th inning that sets up the game-winning run in the Tigers' 9-6 win in Cleveland.

1911: In the nightcap of a game billed as a pitchers' duel, Boston's Cy Young and the Giants' Christy Mathewson face each other before 10,000, Boston's largest crowd of the year. Young gives up three homers and nine runs in less than three innings. After the Giants build a 9 - 0 lead, John McGraw lifts Mathewson, who pitched just two innings, preferring to save his ace for the pennant race against Chicago and Philadelphia. This is the only time the two pitchers ever face each other. Mathewson adds to New York's scoring in the 3rd by swiping home. The Giants coast, 11 - 2. In the field, Matty also helps when, with Doc Miller on first base in the 2nd inning, a line drive to center by Hank Gowdy results in a double play (8-4-1-3). New York wins the first game, 9 - 3, and now lead the Cubs by two games.

1916: Walter Johnson and Babe Ruth, both pitching on two days rest, square off. Washington scores two runs in the 9th when John Henry lines a bases-loaded double off Ruth to tie the game, 2 - 2. Boston scores in the 10th, but Washington tallies twice off Ernie Shore to win, 4 - 3. Johnson is the winner.

1923: Harry Heilmann goes 2-for-5 with a double and a triple to raise his batting average to .395 in the Tigers 6 - 4 win over the senators. "Slug" will finish at .403 to win the AL batting title.

1925: In Detroit's loss to Cleveland, 3 - 1 in 13 innings in the first game of a doubleheader, Detroit's Jackie Tavener hits a major league-record-tying three triples. Benn Karr goes the distance for the win. Detroit then takes the nitecap 3 - 2.

1929: Dale "Moose" Alexander goes 2-for-4 to raise his batting average to .353 in the Tigers 2 - 1 win over the red sox. Dale will finish at .343, a Tigers rookie record that still stands.

1932: With their 100th victory of the year, the Yankees clinch the American League pennant as George Pipgras beats the Indians at Cleveland Stadium, 8 - 3. Yankee manager Joe McCarthy, who captured a flag with the 1929 Cubs, becomes the first manager to win pennants in both the American and National Leagues.

1936: Charlie Gehringer hits two doubles, en route to an AL-best 60 doubles on the season, in the Tigers 10 - 1 win over the yankees.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Dm0j9j7W...pg&name=medium

1938: Hank Greenberg hits his 50th home run of the season in a 4-3 win over the White Sox. His 3rd homer in the last two games moves him closer to Babe Ruth's season record of 60, with 20 games to play.

1939: The Detroit Tigers selected Cotton Pippen off waivers from the Philadelphia Athletics.

1940: Mickey Lolich born on this day in Portland Oregon. In 1968 he tossed 3 CG victories in the World Series to give the Tigers the championship. The rubber-armed lefty led MLB w/ 25 wins, 376 IP and 308 K's in 1971.

1947: Pirates' outfielder Ralph Kiner hits a record eight home runs in four games. Tony Lazzeri had hit seven round-trippers in four games in 1936.

1953: Carl Erskine defeats the Braves, 5 - 2, as the Dodgers clinch the pennant earlier than any other team in National League history up to that point.

1954: A standing-room-only crowd of 84,587 at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium, which establishes the record for the largest crowd to have ever watched a major-league baseball game, witness the pennant-bound Indians sweep a doubleheader from the Yankees, 4 - 1 and 3 - 2. On this bright sunny day, over 12,000 fans are without seats and stand 10-11 rows deep behind the outfield fences as well as 3-5 rows deep in walkways.

1958: The Giants sweep the Phillies, 5 - 2 and 19 - 2, as Willie Mays has six hits to raise his average to .333. Jim Davenport tops him with seven hits, including a 3-run inside-the-park home run in the 1st inning of game 2, and scores seven runs.

1961: Tigers break a tie in the 8th inning on a a Norm Cash sac fly and Steve Boros RBI single to win 3-1. Bill Bruton goes 3-for-4 with a triple.
Frank Lary pitches a CG for his 20th win, en route to a league-leading 22 complete games.

1962: In the dugout in Cincinnati, Willie Mays collapses from nervous exhaustion. He is taken to the hospital and will miss four games. The Giants lose, 4 - 1, and will lose their next six to take them apparently out of the race.

1962: Washington's Tom Cheney sets a major league mark with 21 strikeouts in a 16-inning game at Baltimore. Bud Zipfel's 16th-inning home run off Dick Hall gives the Senators a 2 - 1 win.

1962: In Cleveland, Whitey Ford and Mickey Mantle lead the way to a Yankee win, 5 - 2. Mantle hits a 3-run homer in the 5th off Pedro Ramos, his 2nd favorite all-time cousin (12 homers allowed).

1969: Juan Marichal (18-10) pitches a one-hitter, as the Giants beat the Reds, 1 - 0, but Atlanta takes the National League West lead by beating Houston, 4 - 3. Tommy Helms' 3rd-inning single is the only hit in what Marichal calls "my best game ever."

1974: Detroit P John Hiller picks up his 17th win in relief, an American League record, as he beats Milwaukee 9 - 7.
Tom Veryzer hits a walk-off 2-run home run in the 10th inning.

1976: DH Minnie Minoso singles for the White Sox against the Angels' Sid Monge. Said to be 53, Minoso is considered the oldest player ever to collect a hit in the major leagues, although he is in reality three years younger than his listed age, as will later be discovered.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E_Cx-CkW...jpg&name=small

1976: Mark Fidrych shuts out the Yankees 6 - 0 at Yankee Stadium.

1979: Carl Yastrzemski reaches the 3000 hits milestone when he singles off Yankee Jim Beattie.

1980: Mark Fidrych leaves the game with shoulder pain after 6 pitches. He will make just 2 more starts for the Tigers.
Tigers beat the indians 6 - 3.

1983: Lou Whitaker goes 3-for-5, en route to a career-high batting average of .320 on the year. Tigers beat the indians 5 - 1.

1983: Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell are profiled in Sports Illustrated.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Dm68D8kXoAE8_Tc.jpg

1991: Texas Ranger Nolan Ryan wins his 10th game, beating the Twins, 4 - 3, and becoming just the second pitcher ever to reach double figures in wins in 20 different seasons. Don Sutton did it in 21 seasons. The win, Ryan's 312th of his career moves him past Tom Seaver into 14th place on the career list.

1995: The Milwaukee Brewers traded a player to be named later to the Detroit Tigers for Kevin Wickander. The Milwaukee Brewers sent Derek Hacopian (minors) (September 12, 1995) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

1995: Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker set an American League record with their 1,915th appearance as teammates.
Whitaker hits a walk-off home run, the last long ball of his career.

1997: Jody Reed of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

1999: Before a crowd of 50,027, the Red Sox finish their 3-game series at Yankee Stadium with a 4 - 1 win for a sweep. It is the first 3-game sweep at Yankee Stadium for the Red Sox since 1986.

2003: Tigers beat the Royals to snap a 6-game losing streak. At 38-108, they remain at risk of matching the '62 Mets' mark of 120 losses in a season.

2006: Carlos Guillen hits a walk-off home run in the rain to give the Tigers a 3-2 win over Texas.

2007: The Detroit Tigers signed Bruce Rondon as an amateur free agent.

2012: Miguel Cabrera goes 3-for-5 in the Tigers' 8-6 win over the White Sox. Tigers pull within one game of the Sox in the Central.

2015: David Ortiz of the Red Sox becomes the 27th member of the 500 home run club by going deep twice, both times off Matt Moore, in a 10 - 4 win over the Rays.

2016: Miguel Cabrera homer #440 in the Tigers 4 - 2 win over the twins.

2021: Max Scherzer of the Dodgers becomes the 19th pitcher in history to reach 3,000 strikeouts when he fans Eric Hosmer of the Padres in the 5th inning. Not content with that mark, Scherzer has one of his greatest days: he records the third immaculate inning of his career in the 3rd, joining Sandy Koufax and Chris Sale as the only pitchers to do so, and takes a perfect game into the 8th before Hosmer doubles with one out to break the spell. He will be the only baserunner Scherzer allows in 8 scoreless innings as he strikes out 9 and ends up an 8 - 0 winner.

2022: Mike Trout homers for the seventh straight game, off Konnor Pilkington of the Guardians, but in something that is typical of their season, the Angels still lose, 5 - 4. Trout is one away from the record of 8 games, held by Dale Long, Don Mattingly and Ken Griffey Jr. and has 35 homers, second in the AL behind runaway leader Aaron Judge in spite of playing in just 100 of his team's 141 games so far this year.

Another Shithead Umpire Emil Jimenez was yesterday's lowest rated umpire.

He missed 18 calls and 15 went against the Tigers. What a F'n Chooch.

September 13 in Tigers and mlb history:

1845: Alexander Cartwright presents the first set of baseball rules, 20 in total.

1902: The legendary Chicago Cubs infield trio of "Tinker to Evers to Chance" play their first game together.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F557UJZXcAAun5b?format=png&name=900x900

1907: At Washington Park, Christy Mathewson tops Jim Pastorius, 2 - 1, striking out 11 Superbas batters.

1909: Ty Cobb clinches the American League home run title with his 9th round-tripper. It is an inside-the-park drive against the Browns. In fact, all his nine home runs this season are inside-the-park, including two on July 15th. Only Sam Crawford (12 in 1901) has hit more inside-the-park homers in a year than Cobb.

1922: The Browns announce that George Sisler has severely strained ligaments and cannot lift his right arm over his head. He might be out for the remainder of the season, jeopardizing the Browns' pennant chances and Sisler's 39-game hitting streak. Ironically, the injury occurred when Sisler tried to catch a throw on a hit by Ty Cobb, whose streak he is trying to break. Without Sisler, the Browns rally to beat the Tigers, 8 - 6. Baby Doll Jacobson, playing 1B, makes two errors.

1924: Brooklyn's Dazzy Vance shuts out the Reds, 2 - 0, for his 14th win in a row.

1925: Brooklyn's Dazzy Vance narrowly misses back-to-back no-hitters over Philadelphia, pitching a 10 - 1 no-hitter five days after a 1 - 0 one-hitter. The Phils' lone run is scored by Chicken Hawks, who reaches second base on an error. Five days earlier it was Hawks' 2nd-inning single that ruined Vance's no-hitter. On June 17, 1923, Vance lost a no-hitter with two out in the 9th. In the second game, the Phils win, 7 - 3, behind Hawks' grand slam.

1927: Babe Ruth hits two home runs, to bring his season's total to 52, and the Yankees win a pair from Cleveland to clinch the American League pennant with a 98-41 record and 17-game lead. It is Miller Huggins' fifth pennant, tying him with Connie Mack.

1934: With his fiancee, Edna Mae Skinner of Oklahoma, watching, Schoolboy Rowe halts the Tiger skid with a 2 - 0 win over Washington. He asks in a radio interview: "How'm I doing, Edna?"

1934: Lefty Gomez pitches a 3-hitter against the Indians for his 25th win.

1934: Judge Landis sells the World Series broadcast rights to the Ford Motor Company for $100,000. Previously no fee had been charged.

1936: The Cardinals and Giants split a doubleheader at the Polo Grounds before 64,417, the largest crowd in the 60-year history of the National League.

1936: Indians teenage pitching phenom Bob Feller ties the major league record and sets a new American League record by striking out 17 batters as he two-hits the A's, 5 - 2. After the season, "Bullet Bob" will return to his Van Meter, Iowa home to graduate from high school.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F56CwvHXcAA-XLv?format=png&name=small

1938: A special committee names Alexander Cartwright to Baseball's Hall of Fame for originating the sport's basic concepts. Henry Chadwick, inventor of the box score and the first baseball writer, is also honored.

1946: Joe DiMaggio's 2-run home run off Hal Newhouser gives the Yankees the 5-4 win, eliminating the Tigers and delivering the pennant to Boston. Here's a great shot of DiMaggio sliding into third at Briggs Stadium on a different play.

1946: The Boston Red Sox clinch the American League pennant, edging the Cleveland Indians, 1 - 0, on Ted Williams' inside-the-park home run, the only one of his career. Williams punches the ball over the shift when LF Fat Pat Seerey pulls in behind the SS position. The Boston margin at the season's end will be 12 games.

1948: The Philadelphia Phillies selected Hal Wagner off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

1949: Schoolboy Rowe makes his last career appearance, with the Phillies in Pittsburgh. Tied the American League record for consecutive wins with 16 for the Tigers in 1934.

1949: For the second time in his career, Ralph Kiner hits home runs in 4 consecutive at-bats, over 2 games. He performed the same feat in 1947. The 2 homers today are numbers 33 and 34 for the season. Kiner's 1949 total will include 25 on the road, 29 at Forbes Field, 14 of them in the bullpen enclosure still known as Greenberg Gardens (which will become known as Kiner Korner).

1951: Yankees leadoff hitter Mickey Mantle drives a Virgil Trucks pitch deep into the RF upper deck to start the Yankee scoring. Witnesses say that if Mantle had hit it more to CF, the ball would have traveled 600 feet. Mantle then K's three times, as Trucks drives over New York for a 9 - 2 Detroit win. Trucks adds a pair of RBIs.

1954: Redlegs slugger Ted Kluszewski scores a run in a 6 - 5 loss to the Pirates. Big Klu has scored in 17 consecutive games, a modern record.

1958: The Braves' Warren Spahn becomes the first lefty to win 20 or more games nine times, as he beats St. Louis, 8 - 2. Eddie Plank and Lefty Grove each won 20 games eight times.

1960: Nellie Fox hits a 2-out home run in the 11th to give the visiting White Sox a 6 - 5 win over the Senators. It is Nellie's 2nd home run of the year.

1964: St. Louis becomes the first National League club to score in each inning since the Giants did it on June 1, 1923. They coast, 15 - 2, at Wrigley Field with Curt Simmons improving his record to 15-9. Dick Ellsworth goes to 14-15 for Chicago. Julian Javier, Lou Brock and Mike Shannon homer for the Birds. A dropped pop-up in the top of the 9th secures St. Louis' place in history.

1965: At the Astrodome facing Don Nottebart, Giant outfielder Willie Mays becomes the fifth player in major league history to hit 500 career home runs. The "Say Hey Kid" will hit a league-leading and career-high 52 home runs en route to his second MVP season. Juan Marichal gets his 22nd victory, a 5 - 1 decision over Houston. It is the 11th straight win for San Francisco.

1969: Detroit is eliminated when they lose to the Senators, 11 - 6. The Nats score five in the 5th, three coming home on a Ken McMullen homer, one of his four hits in the game. Detroit rallies in the 6th on Willie Horton's 3rd grand slam of the year, but McMullen knocks home another two runs to give Darold Knowles (7-3) the win over Tom Timmermann.

1971: Frank Robinson of the Orioles homers in each game of a doubleheader split with Detroit, his 499th & 500th home runs. The O's win the opener, 9 - 1, behind Dave McNally's 13th consecutive win. The Tigers use 17 hits to win the nitecap, 10 - 5, for Fred Scherman, who pitches 8 2/3 innings in relief of Joe Niekro.

1972: Frank Howard, who is not playing regularly for the Tigers, hits a 3-run homer off Dave McNally of the Orioles for a Detroit victory. It is his 13th career four-bagger off his favorite pitcher.

1978: Yankees beat the Tigers to take over first place from Boston, after trailing the Red Sox by 14 games in July.

1983: Oakland's Rickey Henderson steals three bases in a 6 - 5 win over Texas to give him 101 for the season and a major league-record three consecutive seasons with 100 or more.

1987: Alan Trammell homers for 2nd straight game. Will finish with 28 HRs, 105 RBIs, .343 average, all career highs.
Tigers beat the brewers 5 - 1.

1989: Jack Morris gets his 162nd and final win of the 1980s, the most of any major league pitcher during that decade.
He was 12th in WAR over the same span.

1995: Tigers Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell set a new American League record for joint appearances - 1,915 games.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CsPnR8nXYAAy4ZY.jpg
Whitaker hits a walk-off home run, the last long ball #244 of his distinguished Tigers and ML career in the Tigers 5 - 3 win over the brewers.

1997: In St. Louis, Tony Gwynn reaches 200 hits for the fifth time in his career in the Padres' 8 - 3 win over the Cardinals.

2001: Due the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Major League Baseball postpones all games through September 17th. The 91 missed games, the most regular-season contests not played since World War I forced the cancellation of the final month of the 1918 season, are re-scheduled for the week after the regular season was supposed to end, meaning the World Series is likely to extend into November for the first time in history.

2002: The U.S. Senate passes a resolution honoring beloved Tiger broadcaster Ernie Harwell who is retiring at the end of the season. The 84-year-old has been a major league baseball announcer for 55 years.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CsPo_TuWIAAwY2m.jpg

2011: Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers continue to steamroll over opponents. Verlander picks up his 23rd win - the first pitcher to reach that total since Barry Zito in 2002 - when he pitches 7 shutout innings over the White Sox for a 5 - 0 win. Verlander has won his last 11 starts, something no one has done for the Bengals since Hal Newhouser in 1946. The win is also Detroit's 11th straight this month.

2011: Mariano Rivera becomes the second pitcher to record 600 saves, one year after Trevor Hoffman, in preserving New York's 3 - 2 win over Seattle with a scoreless 9th inning. "Mo" is only one save behind Hoffman's all-time record, as Hoffman retired after last season.

2013: The Detroit Tigers traded a player to be named later and Danry Vasquez (minors) to the Houston Astros for Jose Veras. The Detroit Tigers sent David Paulino (September 13, 2013) to the Houston Astros to complete the trade.

2017: The Indians set a new American League record with their 21st consecutive win when they defeat the Tigers, 5 - 3.
Detroit manages to take a 1 - 0 lead against Mike Clevinger in the 1st, but in the bottom of the inning, Jay Bruce hits a three-run homer off Buck Farmer and Cleveland nurses that lead until the end of the game. The win also ties the major league record of 21 consecutive wins, set by the 1935 Chicago Cubs.

WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers have won each of the season series against all of their fellow AL Central rivals for the first time since 2011.

Against the other 5 divisions, they have not fared as well.

The Tigers are 5-20 against the AL East and 10-15 against the West. In the NL, they are 6-6 against the West, 7-6 w/ the Central and 6-9 against the East (through Monday?s games).

This year, they sit in 3rd place, with the potential to move into 2nd. However, they are actually 11 games under .500.

Last year, they barely escaped the AL Central basement. Given the improvement this year, it?s conceivable that the team could make a run for first place in their division next year.

The AL Central is known to be the least competitive division in MLB. Only recently has the 1st place team gone over .500 in wins. Despite being the leader, they actually rank right in the middle of all MLB teams in terms of wins.

So does sitting in this division help or hurt the Tigers?

Is it enough for them to win the division and try their luck in the playoffs?

Or does the lack of real competition in the AL Central keep them from being one of baseball?s best teams? Does this division inspire them to be just good enough instead of one of the best?

Is being a member of the AL Central a blessing or a curse for the Detroit Tigers?

These are the questions to ask yourself and others as we ponder just how much better the Tigers need to be. Let?s kick start some good discussion threads here ? and to take with you wherever you go during the rest of the week.

Is it a blessing or a curse for the Tigers to be in the AL Central?
