Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

The crowded outfield just got more crowded for the Detroit Tigers. This means at least 1 OFer will be leaving.... Bets are on Akil Baddoo.

Introducing our newest Tiger!

We have acquired OF Mark Canha from Milwaukee, in exchange for Minor League RHP Blake Holub.

Canha has a solid OPB. Gets on base a ton - walks a lot, strikes out very little. Just the type of player Scott Harris likes.

Totally Tigers

The Tigers have added a Veteran RHH OF to mix in with all the young lefties they have out there.

Mark Canha will be 35 at the start of next season

2023 (Mets/Mil): .262/.355/.400 (108 OPS+)
Career: .250.349.422 (115 OPS+)

Eduardo Rodriguez opts out of contract with Tigers, and becomes a free agent.

Detroit Tigers' Eduardo Rodriguez ("I'd really love to stay here.") has opted out of his contract. Who didn't see this coming? No one should be surprised given his behavior back in 2022 (MIA for 2 months) and his last minute $20 mill request in order to move to the Dodgers.

Yesterday, he and the Tigers were discussing a contract restructure despite Scott Harris saying earlier there would be no discussions until ERod decided whether to opt out. Unclear who asked for the contract meeting but given Harris' statement, it seems likely that it was ERod.

Don't be surprised if ERod and his agent used this meeting to establish a payroll base for negotiations with other teams. Max Scherzer and Scott Boras infamously did this to the Tigers back in 2013-14.

Good pitcher but a complete total Doucebag Cunt of a man.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers head into the off-season and GM meetings next week to start the process of re-configuring their roster. Yesterday, they already started.

Two of the biggest contracts will be coming off the books. Miguel Cabrera?s due to retirement. The Tigers will buy out his option year for $8 mill.

And Eduardo Rodriguez just opted out of his contract and leaves $49 mill on the table.

The signing of a veteran outfielder will add $11+ mill to the payroll.

Considering that the roster is now being built with top prospects under team control and making the MLB minimum salary, payroll is expected to drop. It doesn?t mean that the Tigers are looking to cut payroll.

In the past, the very large payrolls of this team were due to the need to buy players because the farm system wasn?t producing.

This is typical for all organizations who are rebuilding. The Orioles, for example, won the AL East with 101 wins. Their payroll, due to their youth, was $71 mill.

Scott Harris has emphasized that the team will not sign players who will block their top prospects from advancing. Remember, free agents prioritize the number of years in a new contract and the better free agents are looking for a minimum of 3 ? 5 years in any new deal.

Currently, the Tigers are set with their #1 catcher, 1Ber, SS and all outfielders. In fact, there is a glut of OFers.

Many expect Colt Keith to make the Opening Day roster. He would play 2B primarily but can also play 3B.

Jace Jung is expected to be in Detroit at some point during the coming year. Until then, Harris and Greenberg will likely have Andy Ibanez, Matt Vierling and Zach McKinstry cover 3B.

What they do need is a #2 catcher. Dillon Dingler, despite his excellent defense, remains a question mark due to his offensive struggles.

And then there are the pitchers. One can never have enough pitching and it expected that the Tigers will go after another front line starter to replace ERod and also add a reclamation project similar to Michael Lorenzen.

Their current starting pitching still has quite a few concerns about how they would perform throughout an entire year although the team does have pitchers who could make up an entire starting rotation.

And then there is the bullpen which is unpredictable each year for every team.

In summary, it appears the team?s greatest needs that require filling from the outside are pitching.

Given the team-controlled youth that is now the majority of the team, combined with fewer holes that need to be filled, should the Tigers actually be adding payroll given that several big contracts are coming off the books?

Or should they be adding more payroll despite several guaranteed contracts disappearing? And if so, how much?

Approximately $40 mill will be coming off the books, however arbitration and guaranteed salary increases will further diminish that number by 1/4th to 1/3rd.

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can also respond to other readers.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

What should the Tigers do about their payroll for the 2024 season? Please consider their needs, the payroll that is coming off the books, salary increases, the poor free agent market and how this organization is now being run.

What should the Tigers do about their payroll for the 2024 season?

1. Add $25 million or less to the payroll.

2. Add up to $50 million.

3. Add more than $50 million to payroll.

Scott Harris said it's "a little early" to forecast what the Mark Canha trade means for fellow outfielders Akil Baddoo (left-handed hitter) and Matt Vierling (right-handed hitter who also plays third base).

"We have a lot of time left in the offseason to reshape our team."

Lost in Eduardo Rodriguez opting out..is the mostrous gaffe of planning Scott Harris made in how he navigated and executed leverage in the EROD trade deadline deal..instead of two very good..would be top 10 in their system prospects..he now has..not a damn thing

The market for Yamamoto is expected to be among the most competitive of the offseason, with the Giants, Mets, and Cardinals among the reported suitors in addition to the Phillies, Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers, Dodgers, Tigers, and Diamondbacks, all of whom he?s been publicly connected to on some level or other throughout his final season before moving stateside.

November 6 in Tigers and mlb history:

1886: The Sporting News publishes the official National League averages, which show King Kelly as the batting champ with a .388 average, 17 points ahead of Cap Anson. The paper previously had printed its own stats showing Anson ahead, .374 to .366.

1887: The legendary Hall of Fame Pitcher Walter Johnson was born on this day in Humboldt, Kansas.

1922: Morgan G. Bulkeley, first president of the National League and later governor of Connecticut and U.S. senator, dies. As president of the Hartford Dark Blues club, Bulkeley presided over the NL's first meeting and headed the league for one year. He will be elected to the Hall of Fame in 1937, in spite of his relatively short involvement in baseball.

1938: The brothers Joe, Vince and Dom DiMaggio play together for the first time, making up an outfield for an All-Star team in a West Coast charity game.

1939: In a trade of veteran shortstops - or "worn-out shortstops?" as one newspaper describes it - the Cubs acquire Billy Rogell from the Detroit Tigers for Dick Bartell. Rogell? who injured his arm playing handball the previous year? will hit just .136 before hanging up his spikes. The Tigers will release "Rowdy Richard" 5 games into the 1941 season.

1951: Brooklyn Dodgers president Walter O'Malley denies that his minor league team system constitutes a monopoly. He cites the Dodgers' deficit in 1950.

1952: The American League approves a 2-league waiver rule curbing inter-league trading after June 15th. At the Winter Meetings a new bonus rule is approved? replacing the one that was instituted in 1946 and repealed in 1950. This new rule sets the bonus limit at $4?000 or the player could be lost though the draft. This second bonus rule lasts until abolished in 1957.

1958: The Senators give walking papers to 3B Eddie Yost? sending him to Detroit along with Rocky Bridges and OF Neil Chrisley. The Nats receive infielders Reno Bertoia and Ron Samford and OF Jim Delsing in exchange.

1962: Answering rumors that senior consultant Branch Rickey wants Stan Musial to retire, St. Louis Cardinals owner August Busch says Musial will play until it is time to become a club vice president. Further, Bing Devine is still running the club.

1962: Tigers collect 14 hits, including home runs by Norm Cash, Al Kaline, and Dick McAuliffe, in an 11-4 win over the Hanshin Tigers in Japan.

1969: Denny McLain of the Detroit Tigers and Mike Cuellar of the Baltimore Orioles finish dead even in American League Cy Young Award voting. McLain posted a record 24-9 record with 181 strikeouts and a 2.80 ERA. McLain led the AL in Wins, IP, and Shutouts.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DM05QPdXUAEq0Qe.jpg

1970: Minnesota Twins pitcher Jim Perry wins the American League Cy Young Award in a close race. Perry receives 55 points to edge out Dave McNally (47), Sam McDowell (45) and Mike Cuellar (44).

1974: Mike Marshall of the Los Angeles Dodgers becomes the first relief pitcher to win the Cy Young Award. Ironman Marshall set major league records with 106 appearances and 208 innings pitched in relief. (15 Wins - 21 Saves - 2.42 ERA).

1976: The Detroit Tigers purchased Luis Alvarado from the St. Louis Cardinals.

1984: Willie Hernandez wins the American League Most Valuable Player Award, joining Rollie Fingers as the only relief pitchers to be named MVP and Cy Young Award winners in the same season. Willie was the third Tiger pitcher to win the honor, after Hal Newhouser and Denny McLain.
Since then, Justin Verlander has joined the group as the fourth Tigers Pitcher to win the award.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CvjGyZKXEAEcJgl.jpg

1992: Bill Gullickson of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
1992: Alan Trammell of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

1996: In Chicago, the MLB owners decisively reject a proposed labor agreement that would have ended a three-year stalemate. The 18-12 vote threatens to plunge baseball back into full-fledged hostilities between the owners and players' union.

2001: Denying it is a negotiating ploy, Commissioner Bud Selig is given the authority to "begin the process" of eliminating two "to be announced" teams by the MLB owners by a 28-2 vote. Donald Fehr, the Players Association executive director, calls the action of possibly eliminating the Twins, Expos, Marlins or Devil Rays most imprudent and unfortunate and the worst manner in which to begin the process of negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement.

2001: Gold Glove Award winners are announced. Ivan Rodriguez wins his 10th straight to tie Johnny Bench for the most by a catcher, Greg Maddux wins his 12th straight to extend his National League record for pitchers, and Roberto Alomar wins for the 10th time, the most ever for a second baseman.

2001: The Detroit Tigers signed Jamie Walker as a free agent.

2007: The 2007 Gold Glove Awards are announced. Greg Maddux is honored for the 17th time, setting a new record for most Gold Gloves.

The Tigers are expected to pick up catcher Carson Kelly's $3.5 million club option for the 2024 season, per sources. @CodyStavenhagen was first on the news.

Mark Canha?s .364 OBP ranks 23rd among 155 players with at least 2,000 plate appearance from 2018-23.
He ranks ahead of Jos? Ram?rez, J.D. Martinez, Max Muncy, Corey Seager, Bryan Reynolds, Matt Olson, Trea Turner, Nolan Arenado, Rafael Devers and Carlos Correa, among others.

Mark Canha reinvented his approach years ago. Now, #Tigers think he can help young players
"As a young player, you want to impress people, do damage and show that you can hit. ? I was getting myself out too many times. I made a decision to swing less."

The Tigers have hired Tyler Anderson as a pitching coach in the minor leagues. He previously worked as Eastern Kentucky's pitching coach, and also has coaching experience with Baseball Australia, the Phillies and the Angels.
