Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

January 26 in Tigers and mlb history:

1895: Baseball officials discuss the possibility of reinstating the old pitcher's distance. They are dismayed by the explosion of offense, which resulted in "long drawn out and uninteresting contests. Besides the brainy pitcher of former days would be given another chance to display his ability in the science of the game."

1919: The St. Louis Cardinals name team president Branch Rickey as manager, replacing Jack Hendricks. Under Rickey's leadership, the last-place Cardinals will improve only slightly in the standings, finishing seventh this season.

1931: The International League accepts the open draft imposed by the major leagues. Until this time, the top minor leagues could control their players and refuse to sell them.

1932: Chicago Cubs owner William Wrigley dies at the age of 70 in Phoenix, Arizona. Wrigley had owned the team since 1919. Wrigley's son Philip inherits controlling interest in both the Cubs and the minor league Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League, but will leave most of the daily operations to Cubs president William Veeck.

1949: The Detroit Tigers selected Tony Lupien off waivers from the Chicago White Sox.

1951: The Baseball Writers Association of America vote sluggers Mel Ott and Jimmie Foxx into the Hall of Fame.
Ott hit .304 with 511 home runs and 1860 RBI; he managed the New York Giants from 1942 to 1948.
Foxx was a .325 career hitter with 534 home runs and 1922 RBI.

1962: New York Yankees outfielders Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle sign contracts with Columbia Pictures to appear in Safe at Home!, a movie that is to be shot during spring training. The movie will star Maris and Mantle as themselves and feature cameos by Whitey Ford and Ralph Houk.

1963: Major League Baseball's Rules Committee increases the size of the strike zone.
The zone will stretch from the top of the batter's shoulders to the bottom of the knees.
The committee hopes the return to the 1950s strike zone will result in a decrease in runs scored. The results will exceed the committee's expectations, and after the "Year of the Pitcher" in 1968, the strike zone will be tweaked again to give the hitters a break.

1981: Ray Oyler dies of a heart attack in Redmond, Wash., at age 42. Shortstop on the 1968 World Champion Tigers.

1989: The tougher balk rules initiated last season are rescinded and are replaced by the pre-1988 rules.

1990: The Boston Red Sox hire Elaine Weddington as their assistant general manager making her the highest-ranking black female executive in Major League Baseball.

1995: Major League Baseball players and owners are told by President Clinton to resume bargaining and reach an agreement to resolve the strike by February 6th.

2006: Fidel Castro confirms that his country will play in the 2006 World Baseball Classic in Cuba's first official reaction to the U.S. government's decision allowing the communist country to participate.

2009: The Detroit Tigers signed Timo Perez as a free agent.

2012: The Detroit Tigers signed Prince Fielder as a free agent to a $214 Million 9 year contract.

2018: Comerica Bank extends its naming rights agreement for Comerica Park through 2034.

2021: For the first time since 1960, there will be no new Hall of Famer this year as the BBWAA fails to elect anyone, after the Veterans Committee decided to postpone its vote by one year. This year's leading candidate, Curt Schilling, falls 16 votes short, in large part because of his continuous insensitive and extremist statements on all sorts of social matters. Enraged by the writers' decision, he asks that his name be removed from next year's ballot. The next two highest vote-getters, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens, also fail to gain additional support due to their past association with steroids.

2023: The Astros hire Dana Brown as their new General Manager, replacing James Click who was fired shortly after winning the 2022 World Series. Brown, a former minor league outfielder and Director of Scouting for the Atlanta Braves, becomes the only African-American GM in the majors at this time.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

In less than 3 weeks, players for the Detroit Tigers will start to gather in Lakeland for spring training.

Curiously, the Tigers have yet to release a full list of invitees who will join the regulars. They have announced a few players over the past week.

There will be a lot to watch this year. So many young players who are not currently on the roster but vying for a spot. And a number of them that fans are curious to see compete against MLB-level players for the first time.

Which brings me to which 5 players I am most interested in watching. Players who could be crucial to this year?s roster ? or next year?s.

I?m also curious about getting a better insight into the new player development program. I want to see which players are progressing faster and which ones have benefited from the new coaching programs.

It?s a very tough choice. I couldn?t get my list down from 6 to 5. One player had to go ? and it was the one I feel most confident about making the roster.

Colt Keith. He seems primed to make his debut.

I had to select the 5 with the most question marks, the biggest buzz and the greatest roster need......

January 27 in Tigers and mlb history:

1927: Citing accuser Dutch Leonard's refusal to appear at the hearings of January 5th, Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis issues a lengthy decision clearing Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker of any game-fixing charges. Landis orders the Philadelphia Athletics to reinstate Cobb and the Washington Senators to restore Speaker.
Both players are then made free agents. Philadelphia owner Connie Mack will sign Cobb on February 8th, and Speaker will sign with Washington on January 31st for a reported $35,000.

1937: In Cincinnati, OH, the worst flood in the city's history inundates Crosley Field, covering home plate with as much as 21 feet of cold water. The lower grandstand is completely covered. Reds pitchers Gene Schott and Lee Grissom row a boat out from the center field wall and the resulting photo appears across the country. Fortunately, with the season two months away, Opening Day will be unaffected.

1941: The Detroit Tigers signed John McHale as an amateur free agent.

1944: The Boston Braves fire manager Casey Stengel, who becomes the victim of an ownership change when Lou Perini, Guido Rugo, and Joseph Maney take control of the team. In five years, after Stengel will have achieved success at the helm of the Oakland Oaks of the Pacific Coast League, the New York Yankees will hire him as their manager.
The "Old Professor" will guide the Yankees to five straight championships from 1949 to 1953.

1963: John Clarkson, Elmer Flick, Sam Rice and Eppa Rixey are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers Association of America. Rixey will die before the induction ceremonies that summer, marking the first time that a Hall of Famer passes away between the time of election and induction.

1968: The Detroit Tigers drafted Ken Szotkiewicz in the 1st round (3rd pick) of the 1968 amateur draft (January Secondary).
1968: The Detroit Tigers drafted Chuck Scrivener in the 2nd round of the 1968 amateur draft (January Secondary).
1968: The Detroit Tigers drafted Bob O'Brien in the 4th round of the 1968 amateur draft (January Secondary), but was not signed.
1968: The Detroit Tigers drafted Bill Slayback in the 7th round of the 1968 amateur draft (January).
1968: The Detroit Tigers drafted Terry Wilshusen in the 8th round of the 1968 amateur draft (January Secondary), but was not signed.

1977: Boston sports writers honor Luis Tiant as the Red Sox's most valuable pitcher. This is the fifth year in a row that Tiant has won this honor, a record for the award begun in 1952.

1982: The Chicago Cubs make one of the best trades in franchise history, acquiring infielders Ryne Sandberg and Larry Bowa from the Philadelphia Phillies for shortstop Ivan DeJes?s. Bowa and DeJes?s will have a few more productive seasons in the major leagues, but Sandberg, after starting out his career at third base, will become one of the best-hitting second basemen of all time. The winner of nine consecutive Gold Glove Awards from 1983 to 1991, in 1984 Sandberg will lead the Cubs to their first appearance in the postseason since 1945.

The Montreal Canadiens had paid a similar tribute to Gary Carter last year, with everyone wearing his number 8 in the warm-up.

2016: The Detroit Tigers traded Jefry Marte to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for Kody Eaves (minors).

2020: The Reds sign free agent Nicholas Castellanos for four years and $64 million.

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

After overcoming an injury, Jackson Jobe started to turn heads in the 2nd half of last season.

Only 21, he was the Tigers? #1 draft pick out of high school back in 2021. Last year, he rocketed through 4 levels of the minor leagues.

He is currently ranked as the #54 prospect in MLB and the top 10 in pitching. Out of those 10, he is routinely ranked as the #2 RHP. With the Tigers, he is their #3 prospect.

Jobe has developed 3 solid pitches and his slider is believed to be one of the best, if not the best. His control is excellent and he strikes out 1 batter per inning. In the Arizona Fall League, he was striking out app. 1.5 batters per inning.

Given his rough start to 2023, he still finished with a 2.81 ERA and an amazing .984 WHIP. He routinely throws in the mid-upper 90?s.

Jobe has been invited to his first spring training this year. While promising, he?s not expected to make the Opening Day roster. He has yet to pitch at the AAA level.

But how soon could he make the starting rotation?

What year will Jackson Jobe make the starting rotation?

1. Sometime later in 2024.

2. Not until 2025.

RHP Elvis Alvarado, who was in Tigers' big-league camp last spring as a non-roster invitee, has signed a minor-league contract with the Miami Marlins.

The Tigers originally acquired Alvarado in the minor-league portion of the Rule 5 Draft.
