Detroit Tigers: What will the starting rotation look like this season?
The Detroit Tigers have plenty of options in their starting rotation and with only a few openings, there are bound to be some players left for other roles. Could the Tigers get creative to fit more players into roles where they could excel?

March 7 in Tigers and mlb history:

1893: In arguably the most significant rule change in major league history, the National League eliminates the pitching box and adds a pitcher's rubber five feet behind the previous back line of the box, establishing the modern pitching distance of 60 feet 6 inches. In addition, bats flattened on one side to facilitate bunting are banned.

1902: Hall of Famer James (Pud) Galvin dies at the age of 45. Galvin won 361 games over a 14-year career, placing him in a tie for sixth on the all-time list for most wins. In 1883 and 1884, Galvin won a combined 92 games.

1903: In the first trade under the peace treaty, the New York Giants send their 1902 part-time manager Heinie Smith to the Detroit Tigers for second baseman Kid Gleason, who is immediately moved to the Philadelphia Phillies where he will end a 20-year playing career.

1919: Christy Mathewson, back from the World War I, rejoins the New York Giants as pitching coach and heir apparent to John McGraw.

1934: Hank Greenberg towers over his Detroit Tigers teammates Charlie Gehringer, Billy Rogell, and Gee Walker as they pose for a photo during Spring Training.

1936: Jimmie Foxx, the newest member of the Boston Red Sox, waits with player/manager Joe Cronin behind the batting cage during his first spring training with the team.

1941: At Havana, the Brooklyn Dodgers roll over the Cleveland Indians, 15 - 0. Pee Wee Reese and Joe Medwick use a batting helmet designed by two Johns Hopkins Hospital doctors with the help of Larry MacPhail. The two Dodgers, victims of several hit by pitches last year, pronounce the helmets satisfactory. Brooklyn pitcher Van Lingle Mungo celebrates the victory a little too hard and when tomorrow's game is rained out, he continues to party. The result is that manager Leo Durocher sends him a note informing he's been reassigned to the Dodgers' minor league camp in Macon, Georgia.

1955: Commissioner Ford Frick states that he favors legalization of the spitter, "a great pitch and one of the easiest to throw".

1956: The Players Association accept the owners' decisions on minimum pay and the World Series television agreement. They seek workman's compensation coverage. The PA rehire J.M. Lewis as their representative.

1965: Detroit Tigers manager Chuck Dressen suffers a mild coronary occlusion. He will be sidelined until May 19th. Meanwhile, coach Bob Swift will be acting manager.

1979: Slugging outfielder Hack Wilson and longtime executive Warren Giles are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee. Wilson, who had a relatively short career, won four National League home run titles while with the Chicago Cubs. Giles served as president of the Cincinnati Reds from 1937 to 1951, before becoming National League President for 18 seasons.

1979: At spring training, exhibition season opens with semi-pro and amateur umpires in place of major league arbiters, who are staging a collective holdout which won't be resolved until a few weeks into the season.

1991: Cool Papa Bell dies in St. Louis, Missouri, at the age of 87. An outfielder with blazing speed, Bell played in the Negro Leagues from 1922 to 1946. Bell entered the Hall of Fame in 1974, joining fellow Negro Leagues stars Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Buck Leonard and Monte Irvin.

1995: The Special Veterans Committee elects former major leaguers Richie Ashburn and Vic Willis, former National League president William Hulbert, and former Negro League player Leon Day to the Hall of Fame. Day will die of a heart attack six days from now.

1999: In a historic agreement, it is announced that the Baltimore Orioles will travel to Cuba for a March 28th exhibition game against the Cuban national team in Havana. The Cuban team will travel to the United States for a return contest later this season. It is the first time in 40 years that a team from the USA will play a professional game in Cuba.

2000: The Detroit Tigers sent Gregg Zaun to the Kansas City Royals as part of a conditional deal.

2005: The Detroit Tigers signed Alfredo Figaro as a free agent.

2008: The Detroit Tigers signed Blaine Neal as a free agent.

2018: Ichiro Suzuki is returning to the place where his North American journey started, signing a one-year deal with the Mariners. The 44-year-old outfielder first played in the majors with Seattle back in 2001 and had his best seasons with the team.

2023: The Detroit Tigers signed Trevor Rosenthal as a free agent.

March 8 in Tigers and mlb history:

1900: In New York, the National League meets, voting to shrink to eight teams. They pay the Baltimore owners $30,000 for their franchise, with Charles Ebbets and Ned Hanlon reserving the right to sell the players. Cleveland, Louisville, and Washington receive $10,000 each, with Louisville owner Barney Dreyfuss sending most of his players to his Pittsburgh Pirates team. The circuit will remain the same until the Boston Braves move to Milwaukee, WI in 1953.

1913: The Federal League is organized as a six-team outlaw circuit and elects John T. Powers president. It will play 120 games at a level equivalent to the lower minor leagues, but will enhance its status considerably in 1914 to challenge the major leagues.

1918: The New York Yankees purchased George Burns from the Detroit Tigers.

1930: Babe Ruth signs a two-year contract with the New York Yankees for $160,000. At $80,000 per year, he becomes the highest-paid player of all time.

1938: Lou Gehrig rejects the latest contract offer from the New York Yankees to a one-year deal worth $39,000. Four days later, Gehrig will agree to the same Yankees offer and end his spring training holdout.

1941: Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Hugh Mulcahy becomes the first major league player to be drafted into the Armed Forces. The newest member of the 101st Artillery at Cape Cod's Camp Edwards lost 22 games last season and 20 in 1938 to lead the National League in defeats both years.

1953: OF Jim Rice is born in Anderson, SC. He will gain fame as a slugger with the Boston Red Sox, starting with an outstanding rookie campaign in 1975, when he will finish second to teammate Fred Lynn for the Rookie of the Year Award. He will be the American League MVP in 1978 and retire in 1989 with 382 homers and 1451 RBI, having played his entire career with the Sox. Rice will be elected to the Hall of Fame by the BBWAA in 2009, in his last year of eligibility.

1966: The Hall of Fame Special Veterans Committee waives one of its election rules and selects manager Casey Stengel as the newest member of the Hall. Stengel managed the New York Mets for much of the 1965 season before falling and breaking his hip. The injury ended the elderly Stengel's career. Given his age, the Veterans Committee decides to make him immediately eligible for Cooperstown.

1985: Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Dave Stieb signs an unusual 11-year contract. The deal carries an estimated value of $25 million, based on deferred payments and incentives.

1999: Hall of Fame centerfielder Joe DiMaggio dies of a lung cancer at age 84. Born in Martinez, California, DiMaggio arrived in the major leagues at the age of 21. He batted .323 in his first season and helped the New York Yankees to the 1936 World Championship. His rookie performance served as an indicator of future success, both for him and the Yankees. During his 13-year career, DiMaggio participated in 10 World Series, with his team winning the Championship nine times. In 1941, DiMaggio achieved his most famous milestone when he compiled a major league record 56-game hitting streak.

2004: The Detroit Tigers released Tim Christman.

2011: Major League Baseball names Dodgers Assistant General Manager Kim Ng, the highest-ranking woman in the major leagues, as senior Vice-President of baseball operations. She will report to former Dodgers manager Joe Torre, who was named Executive Vice-President last month.

2018: The Detroit Tigers released Travis Wood.

2019: Major League Baseball announces that it has reached an agreement with the independent Atlantic League to have the circuit test out some potential rule changes this year, including larger bases, moving back the pitcher's mound by two feet, limiting defensive shifts and imposing a minimum numbers of batters faced a by a relief pitcher brought into the game. All balls and strikes will also be called by an automated system, and not the home plate umpire, except for a few specific exceptions.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

There are finally some legit battles going on currently with the Detroit Tigers for Opening Day roster spots.
Of course, there are 3 more weeks of spring training and we can expect things to change during that time.
But I’ve already got some questions now that can’t wait until then.
Five of them, in fact. It is, after all, Friday…..

The Tigers have announced the following roster moves:
*Optioned RHP Brendan White to Triple A Toledo.
*Reassigned RHP’s Garrett Hill, Jackson Jobe & Ty Madden, LHP Brant Hurter & C Eliezer Alfonzo to Minor League camp.
*The Tigers have 54 players remaining in Major League camp.
To clarify, Jackson Jobe can still pitch for Tigers on March 12. He’ll be an extra player brought over from minor league camp.

Parker Meadows running down 1B line at 30.0 ft/sec to beat pitcher to bag on grounder to 1B. That's elite sprint speed.

Parker Meadows ADP is gonna trend upward the rest of spring. Had two hits including a HR with a 103.5 MPH EV. Also clocked a 30 ft/sec sprint speed on his single according to @beckjason which is elite! Had a quiet 22 HR/27 SB between AAA/MLB last season.

There's value to having a solid hybrid arm who can give you about 100 innings bouncing between the rotation and the pen (and sometimes between Detroit and Toledo). Alex Faedo could be the guy to fill that role in 2024.
One statline that stands out so far on Alex Faedo:No walks over just six innings of work, small sample size against 23 batters faced but still, the rest looks look.10K 2ER 5H 2.44 FIP .217 BA against.

Former Detroit Tigers pitcher remains stubborn as Spring Training progresses.
Michael Lorenzen remains unsigned as Spring Training continues, the former Detroit Tigers pitcher remains stubborn as he seeks out a two-year deal.
