1888: Tris Speaker is born in Hubbard, Texas and the future hall of fame center fielder is considered the greatest defensive CF'er until Willie Mays comes along. Speaker will play against Ty Cobb for most of his career trailing Cobb in many offensive numbers. He is the all-time leader in doubles, with a remarkable 792, topping the AL in two-baggers eight times and finishing second three other times. He was # 5 all-time in hits with 3514, # 6 all-time in batting average, # 6 all-time in triples, # 9 all-time in Runs Created, # 11 all-time in Runs Scored (in spite of playing during a dead-ball era when runs were scarce), and # 12 all-time in on-base percentage. Speaker gains entry into the Hall of Fame in 1937.

1911: Automobile maker Hugh Chalmers introduces the concept of a Most Valuable Player in major league baseball. Chalmers announces that he will award a new car to the player in each league who is selected MVP by a vote of baseball writers.

1937: Tigers sell future HOFer Al Simmons to Senators. Hit .327 in one season with Tigers.
1937: The Detroit Tigers signed Jack Russell as a free agent.

1948: Philadelphia Athletics manager Connie Mack, who is 84 years old, challenges Washington Senators owner Clark Griffith, who is 78, to a foot race from home plate to first base. The contest ends in a photo finish tie.

1968: The Los Angeles Dodgers traded a player to be named later to the Detroit Tigers for Hank Aguirre.
The Los Angeles Dodgers sent Frederick Moulder (minors) (April 4, 1968) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

1974: Atlanta Braves slugger Hank Aaron blasts a historic three-run home run against Cincinnati Reds pitcher Jack Billingham on Opening Day. The home run is the 714th of Aaron's career, tying him with the great Babe Ruth for the most in major league history.

1975: The Detroit Tigers selected Ray Bare off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals.

1982: The Detroit Tigers signed Juan Berenguer as a free agent.

1989: On Opening Day, New York Yankees pitcher Tommy John ties a major league record by playing in 26 seasons. John beats the Minnesota Twins, 4 - 2, for his 287th win putting him 19th overall in career wins.

1991: The Detroit Tigers released Todd Haney.

1993: At Camden Yards, William Jefferson Clinton becomes the first U.S. President to throw the first pitch of the season from the pitcher's mound.

1999: Hall of Fame pitcher Early Wynn dies in Venice, Florida at the age of 79, from complications caused by a stroke. Known as one of the tough pitchers in the game, the highly-competitive Wynn won an even 300 games over a 23-year career with the Washington Senators, Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox.

2001: At Camden Yards, Hideo Nomo hurls a 3 - 0 no-hitter against the Baltimore Orioles in his Boston Red Sox debut. It is Nomo's second career no-hitter, making him the fourth pitcher in major league history to pitch one in both the National League and the American League, joining Jim Bunning, Nolan Ryan, and Cy Young in exclusive company. It is also the earliest no-hitter, by date, in major league history.

2005: Detroit Tigers designated hitter Dmitri Young hits three home runs to lead his team to an 11 - 2 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

2005: The Detroit Tigers released Mike Rivera.

2009: The Detroit Tigers released Jon Huber.
2009: The Detroit Tigers released Timo Perez.
2009: The Detroit Tigers released Bronson Sardinha.

2013: The Tigers bring back maligned closer Jose Valverde with a minor league contract, as neither of their back-up plans going into the season - rookie Bruce Rondon and a closer-by-committee led by Phil Coke - seems to be working.

2014: Miguel Cabrera homers for his 2,000th career hit and adds 3 singles in the Tigers 10 - 4 win over the orioles.

2015: The Detroit Tigers released Daniel Schlereth.

2017: In his first at bat of the season, JaCoby Jones hits his first major league home run in the Tigers 6 - 3 win over the white sox.

2019: Willie Hernandez throws out first pitch. Spencer Turnbull strikes out 10 in 6 innings in the Tigers' 5-4 win in their home opener over the Royals. Niko Goodrum hits 2 RBI doubles.


2021: For the first time since his debut in Major League Baseball in 2018, Shohei Ohtani is in the batting order in a game in which he is also the starting pitcher. Even more remarkable, he bats second in the order, the first pitcher to do so since 1903, and in his first at-bat crushes a long homer against Dylan Cease of the White Sox. The Angels have a 3 - 0 lead entering the 5th, but Ohtani begins to show signs of fatigue and his night ends on a strange play on which the White Sox score twice on a dropped third strike to tie the game, while he collides at home plate with Jose Abreu. The Angels eventually win the game, 7 - 4, on a three-run walk-off homer by Jared Walsh.

2022: A few days before the start of the season, the Rays trade OF Austin Meadows, an All-Star in 2019, to the Tigers in return for IF Isaac Paredes and a Competitive Balance Round B pick in the 2022 amateur draft.

1887: The Detroit Wolverines obtained Stump Weidman who was previously under league control.

1913: In an exhibition game, 25,000 fans watch the Brooklyn Superbas play their first game in Ebbets Field. Brooklyn beats the Yankees, 3 - 2, with Dodgers outfielder Casey Stengel hitting the park's first home run, an inside-the-parker.

1925: At spring training, the New York Yankees whip the Brooklyn Robins, 16 - 9, but the headlines are about Babe Ruth. The Bambino collapses in the railroad station in Asheville, NC, and winds up in a New York City hospital. Ruth will undergo an operation for an ulcer on April 17th and will be in bed until May 26th.

1934: Babe Ruth, sponsored by Quaker Oats, agrees to do three 15-minute broadcasts a week over NBC. The total of $39,000 for 13 weeks is $4,000 more than his New York Yankees contract.

1941: St Paul (American Association) purchased Clay Smith from the Detroit Tigers.

1956: The Baltimore Orioles selected Babe Birrer off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

1966: Pitcher Don Larsen, who is the last active major leaguer who played for the St. Louis Browns, is released by the Orioles. As a rookie in 1953, Larsen posted a 7-12 record for the hapless franchise which lost 100 games in its final season in St. Louis.

1971: The Philadelphia Phillies returned Wayne Redmond to the Detroit Tigers as part of a conditional deal.

1972: For the first time in Major League Baseball history, the regular season fails to open due to the player strike which started on April 1st. 86 games will be lost before the labor dispute is settled.

1972: The New York Mets acquire OF Rusty Staub from the Montreal Expos for a package of three young players: OF Ken Singleton, SS Tim Foli, and 1B Mike Jorgensen. Staub will help the Mets to the National League pennant in 1973.

1977: The Detroit Tigers signed Roric Harrison as a free agent.

1979: Baltimore Orioles manager Earl Weaver wins his 1,000th game as a skipper.

1982: Jim Kaat, at age 43, pitches one inning of relief for the Cardinals in a season-opening 14 - 3 defeat of the Astros, setting a well-earned but short-lived major league record for pitchers by playing in his 24th consecutive season. Nolan Ryan and Tommy John will later surpass Kaat in the pitching longevity department.

1983: On Opening Day at Shea Stadium, pitcher Tom Seaver makes his first appearance for the Mets since his trade to Cincinnati in 1977, as he combines with Doug Sisk to shut out the Phillies, 2 - 0, on five hits. For Seaver, it's his 14th Opening Day assignment, tying the record set by Walter Johnson with the Washington Senators.

1984: Tigers beat the twins 7 - 3. Alan Trammell is 4 for 5 with a homerun. Gibson with a 3 run homer, Dan Petry with the win.

1985: The San Francisco Giants traded Alejandro Sanchez to the Detroit Tigers for Roger Mason.

1991: The Detroit Tigers selected Luis de los Santos off waivers from the Kansas City Royals.
1991: The New York Yankees selected Scott Lusader off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

1997: Tigers won a wild one with the White Sox 15-12. After going ahead 8-3 in the top of the 4th, they allowed 7 in the bottom of the inning. A 5 run 7th got the lead back. Tony Clark homered twice, Bobby Higginson and Damion Easley each homered once. Brian Hunter has four hits and three stolen bases.

1997: Larry Walker leads Colorado to a 15 - 3 victory over Montreal. Walker strokes four hits, including three home runs with five RBI.

2002: The Detroit Tigers returned Joe Valentine (earlier draft pick) to the Chicago White Sox.

2002: The Tigers issued a scorecard featuring images of Ernie Harwell in commemoration of his final season as announcer.

2004: Atlanta Braves general manager John Schuerholz announces the team has exercised the option to retain Bobby Cox as the team's manager through the 2005 season. The 62-year-old skipper, who is ninth in all-time in managerial wins with 1,906, has won a record 12 consecutive National League division titles. He will manage the team until 2010.

2006: Ivan Rodriguez has possibly the best game of his career. He enjoys his only 5-for-5 game with three doubles and a homer.

2010: Albert Pujols, the 2009 National League MVP, starts off the year where he left off last season, banging two homers to lead the Cardinals to an 11 - 6 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

2012: Tigers walk off on a bases-loaded single by Austin Jackson in the 9th inning on Opening Day and beat the red sox 3 - 2.

2014: Tigers allow 5 runs in the 9th but hang on to win 7-6 and improve to 4-0.

2016: Major League Baseball's new rule on dangerous slides costs the Blue Jays a game, as with the bases loaded and the Jays trailing the Rays, 3 - 2, with one out in the 9th, Jose Bautista takes out 2B Logan Forsythe in an attempt to break up a double play. Forsythe throws the ball away, which seemingly allows two runs to score, but after a video review Bautista's slide is ruled illegal and the Rays are awarded a game-ending twin killing.

2016: Ian Kinsler's RBI single in the 11th gives the Tigers an 8-7 win on Opening Day in Miami.

2018: With 2 outs and 2 strikes in the 9th, Niko Goodrum hits his first career home run to launch a 3-run rally to send the game to extra innings, Tigers win 9-7 in the 10th over the white sox. Dixon Machado hits 2 doubles in the 9-7 win. His 5 doubles are the most by a Tiger in the first 6 games of a season since Melvin Nieves had 6 in 1996.

2019: Guillermo "Willie" Hernndez throws out the first pitch in the Tigers' home opener to kick off the 35th anniversary season. Tigers beat the royals 5 - 4.

2022: The Detroit Tigers signed Shea Spitzbarth as a free agent.
2022: The Detroit Tigers traded Isaac Paredes to the Tampa Bay Rays for Austin Meadows.

Now that the Detroit Tigers’ PoBO Scott Harris has been in the job for 1 full year, the 2024 season should prove to be much more interesting. Whenever a franchise makes a significant change in its leaders, you have to expect that the first year will be filled with analysis and righting the ship.
Much of that (but not all) should be over with the priority now becoming moving forward and throwing off the last of the world’s longest rebuild.

The Tigers have played 6 games through their first week of the new season so it’s still fairly difficult to make any meaty observations from that handful of games. However, we can identify some of the biggest stories that will play out this season. Stories that will impact how quickly – or how slowly – this team gets up to speed.
