1934: Rogers Hornsby hits his 300th career home run. He?s the first National Leaguer to do so, and third overall, behind Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.
1939: The first baseball game ever televised - Princeton against Columbia at the Baker Bowl - is watched by a handful of viewers via W2XBS in New York City. Bill Stern announces the ten-inning victory of visiting Princeton, 2 - 1. Reviewing the game the next day, the New York Times reports: "it is difficult to see how this sort of thing can catch the public fancy."
1941: The city of Philadelphia and the state of Pennsylvania declare a legal holiday to honor Philadelphia Athletics manager on Connie Mack Day at Shibe Park.
1945: For the fourth time in four days, every American League game is postponed because of rain.
1957: Billy Hoeft celebrated turning 25 with a complete game 4-1 win at Yankee Stadium. HOFers Mantle & Berra were a combined 1 for 8 off Hoeft, who benefited from HRs off the bats of Charlie Maxwell, Bill Tuttle & Future HOF'er Al Kaline.
1957: The Detroit Tigers released Eddie Robinson.
1961: Roger Maris hits his first home run of the season at Yankee Stadium (and fourth overall) on his way to a major league season-record 61.
1961: Tigers 9 - Orioles 1. Al Kaline hits a double & a triple to drive in 3. Bill Bruton and Rocky Colavito have 3 hits each. Phil Regan pitches a 6-hit complete game. Tigers 3rd straight win: Tigers are 23-9, up by 5 Games in the AL.
1963: A doubleheader between the Tigers and Senators in Washington was cancelled in the second inning of the first game after a 1 hour and 12 minute rain delay. In the first inning, the Senators? Bobo Osborne hit a grand slam off Don Mossi over the right field fence.
In the top of the second, Al Kaline hit a solo homer off Bennie Daniels into the Washington bullpen. Those two blasts accounted for all the runs in the game when the rains came to wash it all away.
Like the home run he lost on June 1, 1958, this one could have given Kaline 400 for his career.
1968: Jim Northrup hits a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 9th and the Tigers beat the senators 7 - 3.

1979: The wind is really blowing out at Wrigley as the Cubs and Phillies join in a wild ten-inning slugfest won 23-22 by the Phillies, Mike Schmidt's two home runs include the game-winner in the tenth inning.

Wells, whose "perfecto" is the first by a Yankees pitcher since Don Larsen in the 1956 World Series, also sets an American League record by retiring 37 batters in a row, dating back to his start on May 12th against Kansas City.

2000: Cal Ripken passes up Hank Aaron by grounding into his 329th double play, the new record. Ripken will retire with 350 GIDP, which is still the record.

2001: Ike Brown dies from cancer in Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 59. A popular member of the Detroit Tigers for six seasons, Brown was one of the last Negro League players still active in the majors during the 1970s, and the last to make his major league debut. The versatile Brown played every infield and outfield position but center field during his Tigers stint.
2011: Harmon Killebrew, one of the great sluggers of the 1960s with 573 career home runs, passes away from cancer at 74 in Scottsdale, AZ. The gentle and universally-liked "Killer", who spent the bulk of his career with the Minnesota Twins, was the 1969 AL MVP and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1984.

They are the work of Yordan Alvarez; Kyle Tucker, with a two-run shot; Jeremy Pe?a; Michael Brantley, who connects with two men on base; and Yuli Gurriel who gives the Astros a 9-1 lead with the shot that finally ends Eovaldi's outing. Tucker adds a second homer later in the game and Rafael Devers and J.D. Martinez also go deep of Boston. The Astros are the eighth team to hit five homers in an inning, and Eovaldi is the third pitcher to give up all five.

In yesterday’s blog, the topic centered on whether the rebuild under Scott Harris is a different one from the original rebuild orchestrated by the Tigers’ former GM.
As we’ve seen, the Tigers are restructuring their organization quite differently. The people in charge under Al Avila were all let go.
So now there’s a new cast of characters overseeing the project. Many of them we don’t know – yet. But we’re hearing from many – especially from the players – who their favorite department heads and coaches are.
As they become more familiar, expect that we will learn more about them.
But in the meantime, there are a number of them who are already showing their value.
I’ve got my top 5 list of the most valuable Tigers who don’t play on the field. Men who have already shown how they have improved the team.
But you won’t see Scott Harris on my list yet. It’s still too soon to draw conclusions about his work as PoBO.
It’s a different kind of job with a different timeline. His success is based upon how well all those departments under him do.
So without further ado, here are my top 5 MVPs within the organization.

The concerns over the lack of offense continue with the Detroit Tigers, most noticeably when they were recently shut out in 2 straight games by the Miami Marlins pitchers, ranked as having the worst pitching staff in MLB.
Statistically, the Tigers have baseball’s 4th best pitching roster. But in 43 games, the starting pitchers have only 7 wins among 6 SPs. Most of them due to lack of run support.
Reese Olson is pitching at an elite level and has yet to get a win. Jack Flaherty pitched a 2-hit shutout and struck out 14 batters in one game, tying Max Scherzer’s record. He failed to get the win because his teammates couldn’t score. He is also among the top 5 pitchers this year in strikeouts. His record is 0-3 (through Thursday’s games).
The Tigers have indicated that because of their young lineup, there was a concerted effort to fortify their pitching staff in order to help keep the team in games. However, we’re now regularly seeing stellar pitching performances go unrewarded and wasted.
Currently, the Tigers have 8 rookie/inexperienced hitters in their lineups and 2 who are experienced but under-performing. There are 7 players overall who have decent offensive numbers. Positionally, the Tigers have dependable hitters at only 3 positions.
The off-season was known as the weakest free agency market in years for offensively-solid players. The Tigers stated that signing just one would not have helped to the level needed. As well, they explained that they needed to focus on seeing what a number of rookies/inexperienced players could do.
The Tigers’ batters comprise MLB’s 5th youngest group (but just barely missing #4). There is a direct connection to youth and lower offensive numbers.
What do you think of the Tigers’ strategy of having younger batters and trying to compensate for their lack of offense by bolstering their pitching?

Having been delayed in leaving Boston, MA, they arrive in Cleveland only three hours before game time, then extend the game when J.D. Martinez hits a pinch homer in the 9th his first homer as a Tiger, to require extra innings.
However, Michael Brantley hits a walk-off homer off Al Alburquerque in the 10th to end the game, 5 - 4.
2018: The Rays have been experimenting with "bullpen days" all season, when the starting pitcher is not expected to go deep into the game, going all out for 3 or 4 innings before handing the ball over to another reliever, but today they take it even further. Short reliever Sergio Romo starts today's game against the Angels, his first start in the majors after 588 appearances out of the bullpen, and is only asked to pitch one inning before handing the ball over to Ryan Yarbrough. The plan works perfectly as Romo strikes out the three men he faces - Zack Cozart, Mike Trout and Justin Upton, all righthanders - then hands the ball over to lefty Yarbrough in the 2nd. Yarbrough pitches scoreless ball until allowing a run in the 8th as Tampa Bay wins, 5 - 3. It is the first time a starting pitcher leaves after a perfect 1st inning since Ernie Shore had done so on October 5, 1915. Manager Kevin Cash is so pleased with how the scheme goes that he picks Romo to start the next day's game as well.

1956: At Forbes Field, Dale Long of the Pittsburgh Pirates hits a 9th-inning home run in a 7 - 4 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Long will hit home runs in each of his next seven games, establishing a major league record for home runs in consecutive games.
1960: Juan Marichal, in his first game with the San Francisco Giants, pitched a one-hitter to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0.
1962: Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals becomes the National League career hits leader. The 41-year-old has a 9th-inning single for his 3,431st hit and moves past Honus Wagner. "The Man" finishes his career with 3,630 hits, 1,815 at home, and 1,815 on the road.
1963: Bill Bruton of the Detroit Tigers ties a major league record by collecting four doubles in a 5 - 1 win vs. the Senators. Bill Faul pitches a 3-hitter in his first career start. Curiously, Bruton will total only 21 doubles on the season.

1965: Denny McLain pitches his first career shutout and the Tigers beat the senators 4- 0.
1968: After hitting 10 home runs in six consecutive games, establishing a new major league record, Frank Howard of the Washington Senators is stopped by Detroit Tigers pitcher Earl Wilson, who defeats the Senators, 5 - 4, in the first game of a doubleheader.
1968: In the second game of a doubleheader, Al Kaline hits a two-run homer off Washington's Steve Jones to become the Tigers' all-time home run leader, surpassing Hank Greenberg. Detroit wins, 7 - 0, completing a sweep. Kaline remains the franchise leader with 399. Miguel Cabrera has 369 as a Tiger.

1970: The lawsuit filed by former St. Louis Cardinals All-Star Curt Flood against Major League Baseball begins its hearing in federal court. Judge Irving Ben Cooper presides over the case, which will reach the Supreme Court and result in the upholding of baseball's reserve clause.
1976: Carl Yastrzemski has the only three-homer game of his career, going deep three times in a 4-for-4 day in a 9 - 2 Red Sox win over the Tigers. He victimizes three different pitchers - Dave Roberts, Steve Grilli and John Hiller.
1979: After a bitter six-week strike, the major league umpires return to work. During the work stoppage, the men in blue were replaced by amateur and minor league arbiters.
1984: Tigers beat the A's 5 - 4 and improve to 31-5.
1989: Lou Whitaker hits a 2-run homer with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th to beat the royals 2 - 0 at Tiger Stadium.

2009: Dontrelle Willis wins his first game in 20 months and his first in a Detroit Tigers uniform as the Tigers shut out the Rangers, 4 - 0. Willis retires 17 batters in a row at one point and snaps the Rangers' seven-game winning streak.
2013: Miguel Cabrera hits three homers for the second time of his career, but it's not enough as Texas beats Detroit, 11 - 8. Daniel Murphy hits a three-run homer in the 6th inning for Texas, to negate Cabrera's 4-for-4, 5 RBI night. In his other plate appearance, the Rangers walk Miggy to load the bases, but Prince Fielder follows with a three-run double.

2014: The Tigers see their 11-game road winning streak ended after a very long day. Having been delayed in leaving Boston, MA, they arrive in Cleveland only three hours before game time, then extend the game when J.D. Martinez hits a pinch homer in the 9th his first homer as a Tiger, to require extra innings.
However, Michael Brantley hits a walk-off homer off Al Alburquerque in the 10th to end the game, 5 - 4.
2018: The Rays have been experimenting with "bullpen days" all season, when the starting pitcher is not expected to go deep into the game, going all out for 3 or 4 innings before handing the ball over to another reliever, but today they take it even further. Short reliever Sergio Romo starts today's game against the Angels, his first start in the majors after 588 appearances out of the bullpen, and is only asked to pitch one inning before handing the ball over to Ryan Yarbrough. The plan works perfectly as Romo strikes out the three men he faces - Zack Cozart, Mike Trout and Justin Upton, all righthanders - then hands the ball over to lefty Yarbrough in the 2nd. Yarbrough pitches scoreless ball until allowing a run in the 8th as Tampa Bay wins, 5 - 3. It is the first time a starting pitcher leaves after a perfect 1st inning since Ernie Shore had done so on October 5, 1915. Manager Kevin Cash is so pleased with how the scheme goes that he picks Romo to start the next day's game as well.

The lack of offense on this Tiger team is the biggest issue facing them. It was a huge factor in this month’s games so far and pushed the team under .500 at one point.
PoBO Scott Harris has emphasized that the top prospects have to play and cannot be blocked. We all know that inexperienced players struggle offensively in the beginning.
We’re also aware that last winter’s free agent market was one of the weakest ones in history which is why the Tigers were unable to find a suitable bat to sign.
Currently, there are no viable solutions in the farm system that could spark the team’s offense.
Given these conditions, there is only 1 clear solution to improving the Tigers’ offense now instead of waiting until late July or the end of the season. A trade.
Let’s remember that in order to trade for someone who would make an impact, the Tigers would need to give up 1 or 2 promising young players or prospects.
Trading a pitcher would appear to be the most logical currency the Tigers have. Opponents are always in need of pitching.
But don’t expect the Tigers to receive an above-average hitter in exchange for a player who isn’t expected to reach the majors soon. Other teams would want someone who is MLB-ready or very close to it.
Given this, would you approve a trade of Casey Mize, Reese Olson, Ty Madden or even Jackson Jobe for a chance to increase the Tigers’ offense?
