THE DILEMMA.
Totally Tigers

Did you feel it?
Did you watch the game on Sunday?
Did it remind you of something?
Maybe must-see tv? Shades of Justin Verlander back when he was a Tiger?
It did for me.
Tarik Skubal was electric. He was a bulldog. He even seemed to inspire his teammates to play better. There were some outstanding catches that day.
And he threw a 101+ MPH pitch. Chris Fetter had to sit down after he saw it.

In almost every major pitching category, Skubal ranks in the top 5. In WAR, he is #1 with a 3.5. Almost every baseball analyst says he is currently the best pitcher in MLB.
He’s also the unanimous leading candidate right now as the most likely to win the Cy Young Award this year.
All great news, right?
Hmmmmm, maybe.

You see, Tarik’s trajectory doesn’t currently mesh with that of the Tigers. PoBO Scott Harris recently stated that the Tigers are at least 2 years away from building a foundation and core roster. They aren’t looking to add important free agents until they achieve those 2 goals.

Skubal becomes a free agent at the end of the 2026 season. And his agent is Scott Boras.

The Tigers are going to have a very tough decision to make – and probably before the end of 2026.

Skubal is the #1 starting pitcher every team wants, esp. those who play October baseball. The question to ask is whether his ascension will match the Tigers’ in 2 years. Will he still be at the top of his game when the Tigers are ready to contend?

The Tigers have 3 choices to make. Each with great risk – and great reward.

Days of Roar Tigers Podcast: Tough questions on Detroit Tigers' .500 level of play. 56 minutes.
Another 3-3 week for the Detroit Tigers has the "Days of Roar" crew contemplating some tough questions for the ball club. After discussing how the team looks without Kerry Carpenter, Mark and Evan focus in on comments made by president of baseball operations Scott Harris on the MLB Network. How far away are the Tigers from having an established core and what does that timeline even look like? After the break, the guys also examine Scott Harris' comments on Javier Báez. Although the conversation on Baez's diminished hitting seems all but exhausted, Evan has some potentially intriguing data on the struggling shortstop's swing. Later in the pod, the guys cover Kirk Gibson's recent call with 97.1 The Ticket. Are we all being a bit too negative on a team that's only a few games out of a wildcard spot?

2011: Realignment is on the table again as Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association are in discussions to renew the collective bargaining agreement, which expires on December 11. One of the options being discussed would see one team moving from the National League to the American League to create two 15-team leagues, with the Houston Astros the likeliest candidate for a move.

2018: Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera suffers a season-ending injury when he tears a biceps tendon while swinging at pitch in the 3rd inning of a game against the Twins. He had already missed all but one game of May with a hamstring injury. The next few years see Cabrera a shell of his former greatness with an arthritic knee and herniated discs in his back. WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

In yesterday’s blog, we covered the dilemma facing the Tigers about the future of Tarik Skubal. If you didn’t catch it, here it is. You may also want to peruse all the reader comments as you consider which side you prefer.

Skubal is currently considered to be the best pitcher in baseball and the front runner to win the Cy Young Award. Additionally, there is conversation that he is also a top contender for MVP.
Tarik becomes a free agent after the 2026 season. His agent is Scott Boras who is widely expected to take him to free agency.

The concern is that the Tigers aren’t expected to be contenders until they develop their foundation and core roster. PoBO Scott Harris indicated that it would be 2 years in the making if all goes well.
Potentially, Skubal becomes a free agent at the moment when the Tigers may be willing to add some solid free agents.

What should the Tigers do?
Should they trade him while his value is at its highest for a haul of talent that could accelerate the rebuild?
Should they keep him and allow him to walk into free agency in 2 years?
Or should they try to extend him so he remains a Tigers for many years?

What should the Tigers do about Tarik Skubal?

1. Trade him soon for a haul of talent.

2. Keep him for 2 years and allow him to become a free agent.

3. Extend him for multiple years and $$$.
