July 21 in Tigers and mlb history:

1881: Hall of Famer Johnny Evers was born this day in Troy, NY.

1892: In a match up of 300-game winners at Philadelphia Baseball Grounds, Phillies submariner Tim Keefe sinks Jim "Pud" Galvin and the Browns 2 - 0. The next time two National League pitchers with 300 or more victories will face each other will occur in 2005 when Greg Maddux of the Cubs beats Astros ace Roger Clemens at Minute Maid Park, 3 - 2.

1902: Roscoe Miller jumped from the Detroit Tigers to the New York Giants.

1915: Babe Ruth pitches and bats the Red Sox to a 4 - 2 win over the host St. Louis Browns. Ruth is 4 for 4 with a tremendous homer and two doubles, and knocks in three runs. He scatters five hits with the two St. Louis runs coming on Heinie Wagner errors.

1919: Babe Ruth hits a home run over the right field wall at Navin Field (Tiger Stadium). Ty Cobb has 3 infield hits off Ruth in the Tigers' 6-2 win.

1926: Tris Speaker hits his 700th career double in the Indians' 6 - 0 win over the Athletics. Speaker will finish his career with a record 792 doubles.

1928: Jimmie Foxx hits the longest drive ever seen out of Shibe Park as the A's take two from St. Louis, increasing their lead over the third-place Browns to 10 games.

1936: Mickey Cochrane has a relapse, and Del Baker again takes charge of the Tigers. Detroit takes a pair from the visiting A's winning 8 - 0 behind Tommy Bridges, and 9 - 8 as Schoolboy Rowe wins in relief. The Tigers score a pair in the 8th inning when, with the bases loaded, Mickey Owen hits into a double play. Goose Goslin scores the tying run and Gee Walker, who reaches third base on the play, scores when 1B Chubby Dean is caught napping.

1937: Rogers Hornsby is fired as manager of the St. Louis Browns for playing the horses; Jim Bottomley takes over.

1939: Toronto (International) purchased Jim Walkup from the Detroit Tigers.

1945: The Detroit Tigers and the Philadelphia Athletics battle to a 1 - 1 tie in 24 innings. Les Mueller hurls 19 2/3 innings for the Tigers. No hurler has since matched this endurance feat.

1956: In a 13 - 6 defeat to the Cardinals, Dodgers shortstop Pee Wee Reese becomes one of five active players to collect 2,000 hits and teammate Junior Gilliam sets a major league record by handling 12 assists at second base.

1959: Under intense public pressure and the Massachusetts Committee Against Discrimination investigation, the Red Sox become the last club to integrate. Fourteen years after the club passes on Jackie Robinson, despite a successful tryout in 1945, Elijah 'Pumpsie' Green pinch runs and plays shortstop to become the first black to play for the Red Sox. Tomorrow Green will go 0 for 3 against Early Wynn.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F1j8bWGWwAAsQ5h?format=png&name=900x900

1960: Robin Roberts pitches his third career one-hitter, and the third one-hitter of the season in new Candlestick Park. Felipe Alou spoils Roberts' no-hit bid in the 5th inning of a 3 - 0 Philadelphia win. 3B Joe Morgan fields the hit, but falls down and cannot make a throw.

1961: Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris slam back-to-back home runs in the 1st inning for New York, but it takes a two-out, 9th-inning pinch-hit grand slam by Johnny Blanchard to finally subdue the Red Sox, 11 - 8, at Fenway Park. The pinch slam is the American League's 6th of the season, a new record.

1961: The Baltimore Orioles traded Frank House to the Detroit Tigers for Harry Chiti.

1963: Jerry Lynch's major league record-tying 14th pinch-hit home run, a three-run shot off the Cubs' Lindy McDaniel in the 9th inning, ties the game, and the Pirates win, 6 - 5, in 14 innings. The Cubs take the opener, 5 - 1.

1963: The usually mild-mannered Dodger manager Walter Alston is thrown out of both games of a doubleheader as the Braves sweep a twin bill from the Dodgers for the first and only time in Milwaukee, 7 - 2 and 13 - 7. To make matters worse, the Los Angeles skipper has beer thrown in his face by a hometown fan as he leaves the second game.

1965: Willie Horton hits a 3-run home run and drives in 5 on the day in the Tigers' 10-5 win over Cleveland at Tiger Stadium.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DFQ8a2iXkAIau_F.jpg

1969: A gala All-Star Game banquet in Washington is one of baseball's great events. An all-time team and all-time living team are announced. Babe Ruth is selected Greatest All-Time Player, and Joe DiMaggio, Greatest Living Player.

1972: The Dodgers release P Hoyt Wilhelm, ending his Hall of Fame career two days before his 49th birthday. Wilhelm appeared in 1,070 games, the most of any major league pitcher to that point.
He is also the last World War II veteran to play in the majors. He survived the Battle of the Bulge, suffering a permanent neck wound in the action.

1973: Atlanta Brave Hank Aaron hits a Ken Brett fastball into the left-centerfield stands for a two-run home run during an 8 - 4 loss to the Phillies.
It is career home run number 700 for Aaron, only the second player to reach that milestone, after Babe Ruth.

1984: Tigers 7 - Rangers 6. Sid Monge scatters 3 hits over 4 innings of relief. Tigers score 5 in the 5th on RBIs by Ruppert Jones, Chet Lemon, & Howard Johnson. Willie Hernandez gets his 19th save. Tigers are 65-29.

1992: Randy Johnson strikes out 13 batters in 6 innings, but gives up 6 runs - 3 earned - in losing to Detroit, 6 - 2. Frank Tanana is the winner. It is Johnson's 8th loss in a row, the longest losing streak for an American League starter this year.

1993: In Minnesota's win over Detroit, Tony Phillips goes 0 for 4 with two strikeouts against two Twins pitchers. It is his only game without a hit, walk or hit by pitch in a string of 101 games.

1997: The Detroit Tigers released Jose Bautista.

2007: The Pittsburgh Pirates retire Paul Waner's number 11. It is the 10th retired number in the history of the franchise and the first in 10 years. The last player to wear the number was Humberto Cota, earlier in the season.

2007: Jamie Moyer and David Wells face off. The two combine for 88 years and 307 days of age, making it the second-oldest matchup of starting pitchers in major league history. The only older duel was between Don Sutton and Phil Niekro in June of 1987.

2008: The Detroit Tigers released Fernando Seguignol.

2008: The Tigers beat the Royals 19 - 4. It is their third time scoring 19 or more runs this season, the first time a major league team had done that since the 1950 Red Sox. Miguel Cabrera drives in six runs and Matt Joyce five in the rout.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Dh6jLEOW0AALo_I.jpg

2017: Victor Martinez hits two home runs in the Tigers' 6-3 win in Minnesota.

2019: The 2019 Hall of Fame Class is inducted in Cooperstown, NY, with six former players being honored: Harold Baines, Roy Halladay, Edgar Martinez, Mike Mussina, Mariano Rivera and Lee Smith. All are present, save for Halladay, who passed away in a plane crash in 2017 and, who is represented by his wife, Brandy. Rivera, the first player to be elected unanimously to the Hall, gets the honor of speaking last, befitting his status as the greatest closer in history.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers are expected to be sellers at this year’s trade deadline. Potentially, they could be trading away:
– a pitcher
– a reliever
– a catcher
– an infielder
If they lose a player to a trade, they will need to call up someone from the minors. If you could pick just one, who would you select?

Here are your choices:
Justice Bigbie (RF) – To replace Vierling who would move to 1B and Carpenter who is still on the IL.
Dillon Dingler (C) – To replace Carson Kelly who may be traded.
Jace Jung (3B) – To platoon with Gio Urshela who will also play 1B.
Keep in mind that more of these players will be called up later in the summer.
But who should be the first call-up?
Should the Tigers focus on putting someone in with the shortest learning curve so the team may finish the season on their strongest note?
Or should this be more of a tryout/dress rehearsal that may impact their win-loss record?
Finally, are these players ready to be tested at the MLB level? Would being called up too soon do damage to their development?

Today’s blog addresses this question and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!
For this one blog only, you’ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can also respond to other readers.
TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

Who should be the first prospect called up if the Tigers trade away a player at the deadline?

1. Justice Bigbie

2. Dillon Dingler

3. Jace Jung

Jackson Jobe looms as Reese Olson’s injury compounds the Tigers rotation problems.
The injury is hopefully minor, but with Olson, Mize, and Manning down, and Jack Flaherty likely traded soon, let the Jackson Jobe era begin.

I ran a Twitter poll on the afternoon of Tuesday’s All-Star Game, asking how much of it people were planning to watch. There were four options, and the results strongly suggested that the Midsummer Classic — this year’s was the 95th — isn’t nearly the attraction it once was. Only 19% of respondents selected “all,” while another 15.9% went with “most.” The lesser-interest options fared much better. “Some” garnered 29.4% of the votes cast, and “none” topped the poll with 35.7%.

Viewership numbers were nothing to write home about. Per the Associated Press, “This year’s All-Stars drew 7,443,000 viewers on Fox, up 6% from the 2023 game but the second lowest for the event.” Moreover, the “3.8 rating and 12 share were down from a 3.9/12 last year.”

None of this is surprising. For a variety of reasons — inter-league play and regular access to most every game/team/player are the primary ones — the game has clearly lost much of its luster. The days of Pete Rose running over Ray Fosse (in 1970) and Carl Hubbell striking out five consecutive Hall of Famers he’d never before faced (1934) are long gone. As B.B. King famously sang, the thrill is gone.

Bryce Rainer took questions from the media after being taken 11th-overall by the Detroit Tigers in last Sunday’s amateur draft, and there was a bit of Triston Casas in his answers. Much like the always-engaging Boston Red Sox slugger — Casas was likewise a first-round pick out of the prep ranks — Rainer came off as a combination of confident, refreshingly honest, and entertainingly quirky.

The Athletic’s Cody Stavenhagen led off the questioning by asking the 19-year-old shortstop out of Los Angeles’s Harvard-Westlake High School what it was like to hear his name called.

“I honestly don’t think there’s a word to explain how I felt,” Rainer replied. “If there is anything I could compare it to, I’d say it’s almost like a kid at Christmas… I’m still kind of in a state of shock, per se. It still doesn’t really feel real, but it’s been pretty cool.”

Rainer mentioned Santa Claus in his response, and regardless of how real old Kris Kringle truly is, the young infielder is indeed Detroit-bound. It’s not what he anticipated come draft day.

“I did not think it was going to be the Tigers,” admitted Rainer, whom Eric Longenhagen had projected to go the Chicago White Sox six picks earlier. “I’m going to be honest with you. We had some ideas. The draft’s crazy — crazy things happen — and time went on, getting phone calls, then it was ‘Tigers.’ I was like, ‘All right. Let’s go. Looks like I’m going to be a Tiger.’”

July 22 in Tigers and mlb history:

1893: Hall of Famer Jesse 'Pop' Haines was born this day in Clayton, OH.

1902: Sport McAllister returned to the Detroit Tigers by the Baltimore Orioles as part of earlier loan.

1904: The Detroit Tigers purchased Lew Drill from the Washington Senators.
1904: The Detroit Tigers purchased Bill Coughlin from the Washington Senators for $8,000.

1909: For the first of four times in his career, Ty Cobb steals second base, third base, and home in an inning, doing it in the 7th against Red Sox pitcher Harry Wolter. It is also Ty's first swipe of home in his career. Ty will steal home a record total of 54 times in his career. The Tigers beat Boston 6 - 0.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DFSRx1RXsAAXEQ-.jpg

1923: Walter Johnson notches his 3,000th strikeout on the way to 3,508. He fans five in beating Cleveland, 3 - 1. The next pitcher to reach 3000 Ks will be Bob Gibson, in 1974.

1926: "Babe Ruth Catches Ball From Airplane; Seventh Attempt Gives Him World's Record" (Mitchel Field - Long Island, New York).

1939: Tigers blow a 6-0 lead but beat Philadelphia 11-10. Rudy York hits 2 home runs. Pitcher Schoolboy Rowe also homers. Hank Greenberg has his third straight 3-hit game.

1941: Dick Wakefield becomes baseball's first "bonus baby" when he signs with the Tigers for $52,000 and a new car. The University of Michigan standout will hit .143 in seven at-bat this season but will eventually turn into a solid outfielder batting .293 over parts of 9 seasons.

1947: Roy Cullenbine draws a walk for the 22nd straight game. Still a major league record.

1952: The Detroit Tigers released Fred Hutchinson.

1952: After throwing a No-hitter May 15 vs. the Senators, Detroit's Virgil Trucks gives up one hit in beating Washington 1 - 0. Later this year, on the 25th of August, "Fire" Trucks will No-hit the Yankees.
The craziest stat about Virgil Trucks' 2-no-hitter season in 1952 is that his record was 5-19.
The second-craziest is that in 3 of his 5 wins he tallied at least 26 outs without allowing a hit.
The third-craziest is that he was traded after the season.

1954: Casey Stengel switches players in an effort to get more power in the Yankee lineup. Phil Rizzuto plays 2B and Mickey Mantle plays SS, the position he manned four years ago in the minor leagues. Mantle wins the game, 3 - 2, against Chicago, with a 10th-inning home run.

1956: The Hall of Fame announces special rules governing elections. Writers should vote every two years, alternating with the Veterans Committee; because of criticism, this will revert back in 1962. To be eligible, players must have been retired for five years.

1960: The Detroit Tigers traded Tom Morgan to the Washington Senators for Bill Fischer.

1960: At Fenway Park, the Red Sox down the Indians, 6 - 4. Vic Wertz has a three-run homer and four RBIs.
Ted Williams also homers and, in the 7th inning, steals second base.
Williams sets a major-league record as the only player to steal bases in four consecutive decades: he'll be matched by Rickey Henderson in 2000 and Tim Raines the following year.

1964: Led by Willie Stargell, who hits for the cycle, the Pirates roll over the Cardinals, 13 - 2.

1964: Tigers top the Red Sox 8-6 on HRs from McAuliffe (18th), Cash (14th) and Kaline (7th).

1967: Norm Cash goes 4-for-5 with a double and a grand slam in the Tigers 11-4 win over the Yankees at Tiger Stadium
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DijLb0dXsAER_38.jpg

1968: Leon "Goose" Goslin, who singled home Mickey Cochrane with the winning run for the Tigers in the 1935 World Series, will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame this morning. Goslin played from 1921 to 1938, mainly with Washington. He was with the Tigers 1934-1936.

1969: For the first time, the All-Star Game is postponed due to rain.

1972: The New York Yankees retire uniform #8 worn by legendary catchers Bill Dickey & Yogi Berra!
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F1pWkPDWcAEkq3-?format=png&name=900x900

1972: Tigers sweep the Rangers for their 7th win in 8 games and take a 2-game lead in the AL East.
Aurelio Rodriguez goes 3-for-5 with a home run, Norm Cash hits a 2-run double.

1984: Tigers shutout the Rangers 2 - 0. Dave Bergman hits HR and scores on WP. Dan Petry wins his 13th.

1989: Johnny Bench, Carl Yastrzemski, Red Schoendienst and umpire Al Barlick are inducted into the Hall of Fame at ceremonies in Cooperstown, New York.

1993: Kansas City's Greg Gagne hits a home run off Detroit's Mark Leiter in the Royals' 12 - 6 victory. The home run is the 10,000th hit in the long history of Tiger Stadium, making it the first ballpark to reach that figure. During the game, Detroit 3B Travis Fryman draws a walk off KC P Enrique Burgos, then proceeds to circle the bases on three wild pitches by Burgos.

1997: Marcus Jensen of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2001: At Cleveland, Bartolo Colon pitches the Tribe to a 6 - 3 win over the Tigers and pulls Cleveland within a game of Minnesota in the AL Central. Jim Thome adds his AL-high 31st homer.
Before the game, the Indians honor their Century 100, with 38 of their all-time greats on hand. Receiving the biggest applause is Rocky Colavito. Bob Feller, as well as 91-year-old great Mel Harder, also receives a huge hand.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DB0Of6tW0AI2WMl.jpg

2005: The Detroit Tigers released Doug Creek.
2005: The Toronto Blue Jays sent John McDonald to the Detroit Tigers as part of a conditional deal.

2012: SS Barry Larkin and 3B Ron Santo are inducted into the Hall of Fame at the annual ceremony held in Cooperstown, NY.

2012: The Tigers complete a three-game sweep of the White Sox with a 6 - 4 win at Comerica Park. They score all of their runs on four homers off Philip Humber in the first 3 innings; two of the homers are by Miguel Cabrera, including the 300th of his career on a huge blast to center field in the 3rd inning.

Jacob Turner is the winner, earning his first major league victory.
The Tigers have won 16 of their last 21 to move 1 1/2 games ahead of the Sox in the AL Central.

2016: Miguel Cabrera gets his 1,500th RBI on his 4th hit of the day in the Tigers 7 - 5 win over the white sox.

2020: The Dodgers and Mookie Betts come to an agreement on a twelve-year contract extension, through 2032. The deal is estimated to be worth $325 million. The Dodgers had acquired Betts in a blockbuster trade in February, and the two sides were close to an agreement in March when talks were put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.

2022: In their first game after the All-Star break, the Blue Jays set a team record for runs in a 28 - 5 beatdown of the Red Sox. Every one of the team's starters has at least two hits and two runs scored, with Lourdes Gurriel leading the way with 6 hits and 5 RBIs and Danny Jansen with 4 runs and 6 RBIs. In a play that epitomizes the whole game, Red Sox CF Jarren Duran loses a fly ball by Raimel Tapia in the lights, and it falls for an inside-the-park grand slam as part of a 7-run 3rd inning; the Jays then score 11 times in the 5th.

Tigers players and coaches birthdays:

Doc Cramer 1942-1948, coach 1948.
