1915: The Detroit Tigers purchased George Cunningham from Chattanooga (Southern Association).

1932: American League president Will Harridge upholds Detroit's protest of its August 1st game against New York and orders it replayed on September 8. Detroit had protested because Tony Lazzeri's and Ben Chapman's batting order was orally reversed after the lineup cards were handed in before the game.

1934: 41,766 turn out to Fenway Park to see what will probably be Babe Ruth's last game in Boston. In game one of the doubleheader, Ruth goes 2 for 5 with a double, but misplays a Billy Werber line drive into a triple. Ruth is 0 for 1 with two walks in the second game, leaving in the 6th inning. He will in fact return to Hubtown in 1935, when he finishes his playing career with the Boston Braves.

1936: In game 1 Boston pitcher Wes Ferrell shows his hitting skills hitting two homers off A's veteran Hod Lisenbee. Ferrell collects all six RBIs in picking up the win? 6 - 4. Ferrell's first homer comes in the 3rd with his brother Rick on base and he homers again in the 4th inning with the sacks full. The 6 RBIs ties a major league record for pitchers. The ace allows 9 hits while striking out 8. The A's square accounts by taking the nitecap 6 - 0 behind Harry Kelley's 3-hitter.

1937: In the first of two with the Yankees? Jimmie Foxx hits one way out of Fenway Park? the ball leaving the park to the right of the CF flag pole. The shot comes off New York's Kemp Wicker and helps the Red Sox overpower the Yankees? 16 - 10, stopping New York's win streak at 10.

1940: Ernest Lawrence Thayer, author of "Casey at the Bat" dies in Santa Barbara, CA at age 77.

1947: After losing the first game to Detroit 7 - 1 the Browns take the nitecap 6 - 5 beating Hal Newhouser in relief.
For Newhouser it is his first loss to the Browns after 15 consecutive wins.

1949: At Ebbets Field? the Braves top the Dodgers? 5 - 3 in a game that Brooklyn protests. In the 8th inning Duke Snider belts a drive off the CF screen that umpire Artie Gore signals a home run. The Braves point out that? according to the ground rules? the ball is still in play? and Gore sends Snider back to third base. When Duke is stranded there the Dodgers protest. The protest will be rejected by Ford Frick who censors Gore for the confusion he caused by his "bad judgment and slow thinking."

1950: The Giants' Eddie Stanky is banished by umpire Lon Warneke for refusing to stop waving his arms in an attempt to distract Phillies' batter Andy Seminick. This is a reprise of a shuffle Stanky initiated on August 9th.
In the 4th? Stanky moves over behind second base and goes into a windup the same time as the pitcher. Giants manager Leo Durocher had agreed to await a league ruling on the tactic? but after Seminick knocks Hank Thompson unconscious in a collision at third base? Durocher turns Stanky loose.
In the 4th Seminick reaches base on an error then on a force at second base, he puts a linebacker block on Bill Rigney Stanky's replacement? and both dugouts empty for a brawl. The Phils go on to win, 5 - 4, in 11 innings on Stan Lopata's triple and a sac fly by Eddie Waitkus. The Giants protest Stanky's ouster to no avail.

1951: Roy Campanella breaks up a pitching duel between Don Newcombe and Boston's Johnny Sain with a three-run homer? his second of the game? and the third time in 9 games he's collected a pair of homers. Campy's 5 ribbies give the Dodgers a 7 - 2 win.

1953: The Detroit Tigers signed Ray Scarborough as a free agent.

1953: At St. Louis? Ray Boone smashes his 4th grand slam of the year to tie a ML record? as the Tigers win 7 - 3 over the Browns.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DEdWLVSX...jpg&name=small

1953: Playing without the injured Mickey Mantle - out for 10 days with a sprained knee - the Yankees explode for 28 hits off Washington pitching? two shy of the American League record. New York rolls to a 22 - 1 victory. Rookie Steve Kraly? relieving Whitey Ford? gives up a run to avert the largest shutout win in history. Ford has 4 hits? and Yogi Berra and Billy Martin each collect 5 RBIs. Hank Bauer scores 5 runs.

1959: "I wish I'd thrown the ball as hard as he hit it." Such is Robin Roberts' melancholy memory of Roberto Clemente's 7th-inning, two-out, bases-clearing, game-winning triple to left center. Final score: Bucs 6 - Phillies 2.

1963: Stan Musial announces his retirement, effective at the end of the season, at the St. Louis Cardinals' annual team picnic.

1970: Judge Irving Ben Cooper rules against Curt Flood in his antitrust suit. Cooper says "Decisions of the Supreme Court are not lightly overruled... We find no general or widespread disregard of the extremely important position the player occupies... Clearly the preponderance of credible proof does not favor elimination of the reserve clause." However the judge says changes in the reserve clause should be made through negotiation, but denied Flood damages.

MONDAY MUSINGS.
Totally Tigers

Today, it’s about quick hits – bits of news that catch my radar during the week as well as connecting the dots re ongoing stories. Even the quirky.
So let’s get to it! Here are the most interesting topics that hit my radar over the past week………..

Remembering Former Tiger Richie Hebner, “The Grave Digger”.
Vintage Detroit

"Days of Roar" Tigers Podcast: Is Parker Meadows the key to wins for Detroit Tigers moving forward? Which hitters have good processes? 61 minutes.

The Detroit Tigers completed a six-game West Coast trip with a 3-3 record, winning two of three games in Seattle and losing two of three in San Francisco. The Tigers aren't in postseason contention with 43 games remaining, so how much value should we place in what happens over the final six weeks of the season? A few injured players are coming back soon, including Kerry Carpenter, but Parker Meadows seems to be the No. 1 player to watch down the stretch because of his potential impact for years to come. Also, what could the starting rotation and bullpen look like on 2025 Opening Day? After that, Nate Schwartz, a writer for PitcherList, joins to discuss Process+, a new all-encompassing hitting stat that provides a comprehensive understanding of a hitter's process at the plate. He explains which Tigers have good processes and which Tigers have bad processes, solely based Process+ in the 2024 season. To wrap up, we discuss the injury to Wenceel Pérez and provide an update on Spencer Torkelson.

August 13 in Tigers and mlb history:

1900: A mechanical pitching machine is used in a game between the Memphis Chicks and the Nashvilles. The invention of Princeton professor Charles Hinton, the early pitching gun strikes out two and allows three hits in two innings.

1902: In the 6th inning of a game with the Tigers, Harry Davis of the A's attempts a double steal with Dave Fultz, who is on third base. But Davis does not draw a throw as he goes into second, and Fultz cannot score. So, on the next pitch, he "steals" first base. The next time he steals second, he does draw a throw and Fultz scores from third. This double steal maneuver will be attempted in later years by Fred Tenney (July 31, 1908), and Detroit's Germany Schaefer (September 4, 1908), before being made illegal.

1906: The Washington Senators purchased Jack Warner from the Detroit Tigers.

1908: Cy Young Day is celebrated by 20,000 in Boston. He pitches briefly against an All-Star team that includes Jack Chesbro, Hal Chase, Willie Keeler, Harry Davis and George Mullin. The game is interrupted several times for presentations to the great hurler, including a great loving cup from the American League for all his accomplishments.

1909: The Washington Senators traded Jim Delahanty to the Detroit Tigers for Red Killefer and Germany Schaefer.

1910: In the most evenly matched game ever, the Pirates and Superbas each have eight runs, 13 hits, 38 at bats, five strikeouts, three walks, one hit batter, one passed ball, 13 assists, 27 putouts, two errors, and use two pitchers. Darkness ends the game before the symmetry does.

1911: Ty Cobb, apparently believing the Tigers can no longer win the pennant race, begins a vacation.

1923: Pirates OF Max Carey steals second base, third base and home versus Brooklyn. He will again lead the National League with 51 stolen bases. Equally fleet in the field, he will garner 450 putouts and 28 assists. He is the first OF to top 400 putouts 6 times. Richie Ashburn will later do it 9 times.

1930: Tommy Bridges makes his major league debut. Bridges will pitch 16 seasons in the big leagues, all with the Tigers, appearing in 4 World Series, winning two championships, with a 4 and 1 record.
Tommy will have three 20 win seasons 1934-1936, and lead the American League in Strikeouts in '35-'36.
His career record is 194 Wins and 138 losses with an ERA+ of 126.

1932: Commissioner Kenesaw Landis clears Rogers Hornsby of charges of fraudulently "borrowing" money from Cubs players. The Chicago papers said Hornsby had obtained money from players, either loaned to him to bet on horse races, or to share in joint ventures. When Hornsby is fined, the players want refunds. Hornsby wants a lump payoff by the Cubs, who refuse. Landis holds several hearings, and as he doesn't punish anyone, it is taken as exoneration.

1933: Vic Sorrell pitches a 17-inning complete game win.

1934: In a preview of the World Series, the Cardinals play the Tigers in an exhibition game in Detroit. The Deans refuse to make the trip, having both pitched the day before. Dizzy is fined $100 and Paul $50.

1939: The Yankees beat the A's, 21 - 0, to equal the major-league record for lopsided shutouts. Joe DiMaggio and Babe Dahlgren each hit two home runs, one each inside-the-park. Red Ruffing collects four hits along with the victory.

1944: The West takes the 1944 East-West Game, 7 - 4, behind the Radcliffe brothers. Ted Radcliffe socks a two-run homer while Alec Radcliffe drives in two as well and flashes a good glove; the brothers combine for five hits.

1947: At Sportsman's Park, pinch-hitter Willard Brown of the Browns becomes the first black player to hit a home run in the American League. The historic homer, a pinch-hit inside-the-parker off future Hall of Fame hurler Hal Newhouser, helps the Browns beat the Tigers 6 - 5.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F3admYtWwAAAGE2?format=jpg&name=medium

1948: The promise of Satchel Paige on the mound brings 51,013 to Comiskey Park to see "Ole Satch" pitch his first big league shutout as Cleveland wins, 5 - 0. He gives up five hits to run his record to 5-1. In his 12 appearances, Paige has attracted 201,829 fans.

1951: Every one who shows up with a musical instrument is admitted free to Ebbets Field. 2,426 fans take advantage of the offer, including one with a piano. The Dodgers have a motive in countering the local musicians' union which wants to silence the non-union Sym-Phoney. The Dodgers outplay the Braves, 7 - 6, as Gil Hodges belts a three-run homer in the 8th, following an intentional walk to Roy Campanella, who had homered earlier.

1954: The White Sox top the Tigers, 1-0 in 16 innings. Al Aber goes the distance (15.1 innings) in the loss for a Game Score of 101. Jack Harshman gets a complete-game shutout win for a Game Score of 109.

1955: Larry Doby makes his first error in the OF in 167 games, a new American League record.

1957: Mickey Mantle goes 3 for 3 and drives in three runs as the Yankees edge the Red Sox, 3 - 2. Mantle improves his average to .384 while Ted Williams, with 1 for 2, is at .388. A week later, Mantle will injure himself when he angrily swings a golf club at a branch and gouges his shinbone. This will effectively take him out of the running for a second straight Triple Crown.

1961: In the first of two with the Senators, Roger Maris belts his 44th homer to tie Mickey Mantle. An inning later, Mantle hits a Bennie Daniels offering for his 45th, but that's all Daniels allows, winning, 12 - 2. Maris adds his 45th homer in the 1st inning in game two as the Yanks win, 9 - 4.

1967: Tigers win 3-2 over the orioles on a 3-run home run by light-hitting shortstop Ray Oyler: his first home run in over a year.

1969: With a unanimous vote, the major league owners elect Commissioner Bowie Kuhn to a seven-year term.

1969: Baltimore Orioles legend Jim Palmer hurls a no-hitter vs. the Oakland A's at Memorial Stadium.

1969: Denny McLain pitches a 3 - 0 shutout over the angels for his 18th win of the year. Denny ties Hal Newhouser's team record with his 8th shutout of the season, and will set the club record with shutout # 9 September 15 vs. the yankees.

1972: Tigers manager Billy Martin literally picks his starting lineup out of a hat in an attempt to halt the Tigers' 4-game losing streak. The ploy works as Detroit defeats Cleveland 3 - 2. Using a regular lineup in the nightcap, the Tigers lost 9 - 2.

1979: Lou Brock collected his 3000th hit.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F3btCqPaEAA1RD0?format=jpg&name=medium

1980: Aurelio Lopez comes in with the bases loaded in the 8th inning and strikes out the side, then, with the bases loaded in the 9th, gets a double play and a strikeout to win the game for the Tigers 2 - 1 over the red sox.

1984: At Cooperstown, the Tigers beat the Atlanta Braves, 7 - 5 in the annual Hall of Fame Game.

1991: The Detroit Tigers released John Shelby.

1995: Flags fly at half-mast at Yankee Stadium as Yankee legend Mickey Mantle dies of liver cancer at the age of 63 in Dallas, Texas.

2004: The Detroit Tigers signed Jorge Toca as a free agent.
2004: The Detroit Tigers released Danny Patterson.
2004: The Detroit Tigers traded a player to be named later and Jon Connolly (minors) to the Chicago Cubs for Felix Sanchez. The Detroit Tigers sent Eric Eckenstahler (August 13, 2004) to the Chicago Cubs to complete the trade.

2007: Placido Polanco plays his 144th consecutive game at second base without an error. This breaks Luis Castillo's record, set earlier this season. The two streaks overlapped for many months. The Tigers still lose 7 - 2, dropping them to 8 wins in their past 25 games and a tie for first place with the Indians.

2009: Justin Verlander pitches 8 shutout innings with 8 strikeouts to win his 13th game of the year. Ryan Raburn's homer and RBI single score the Tigers 2 runs.

2013: The Detroit Tigers purchased Ronny Paulino from the Baltimore Orioles.

2014: The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Ramon Cabrera off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

2018: Nicholas Castellanos has his first 5-hit game, with a home run and 2 doubles and the Tigers beat the white sox 9 - 5.

2019: The Detroit Tigers signed Sandy Baez as a free agent.

2020: Mookie Betts leads the Dodgers to an 11 - 2 win over the Padres with a three-homer game, the 6th of his career. That ties him for most all time with Johnny Mize and Sammy Sosa, although Betts has reached the total in just 813 games, whereas Mize needed 1,884 and Sosa 2,364.

2023: The Detroit Tigers released Chasen Shreve.
