1912: The Tigers fall to Walter Johnson, 8 - 1, Big Train's 16th win in a row. He is now 29-7.

1916: Ty Cobb goes from first to third on a teammate's single to LF, then swipes home when A's 3B Charlie Pick holds the ball. Detroit wins 10 - 3.

1930: The Yankees buy Frank Crosetti from the San Francisco Seals but allow him to play another season in the Pacific Coast League before reporting. The Yankees will make a similar arrangement for Joe DiMaggio, buying him from the Seals but waiting a year before acquiring him in 1936.

1931: Lefty Grove is frustrated in his effort to win a record-breaking 17th game in a row, as Jimmy Moore misjudges a routine fly ball by Ski Melillo, turning it into a 2-out double, to allow the game's lone run. The volatile Grove is outraged and unforgiving, not at Moore, but that Al Simmons, the regular OF, missed the game. Dick Coffman of the Browns allows just three hits to win, 1 - 0.

1936: Seventeen-year-old Bob Feller makes his first start and strikes out 15, one less than the American League record, as Cleveland beats St. Louis, 4 - 1.

1936: The East uses a balanced offense to thump the West, 10-2, in the 1936 Negro Leagues East-West Game.
Leroy Matlock got the win and Sug Cornelius the loss while Cool Papa Bell went 3 for 3.

1942: Walter Johnson pitching to Babe Ruth is the pregame attraction that draws 69,000 for the New York-Washington game at Yankee Stadium that provides $80,000 for Army-Navy relief. Ruth hits the fifth pitch into the right-field stands, and then adds one more shot before circling the bases. Sixteen relief games contribute $523,000 during the season.
In the doubleheader between the Senators and the Yankees, the Senators win the opener, 7 - 6 and New York cops the nitecap, 3 - 0, in 5 1/2 innings.

1956: Led by Nellie Fox's seven straight hits, the White Sox sweep the Yankees. Mickey Mantle has a bunt single, triple and home run in the 6 - 4 nightcap loss but trails Fox in season hits, 158 to 155. But the Mick still leads in the Triple Crown race.

1958: In a 10 - 1 win over Milwaukee, Gil Hodges hits his 14th career grand slam to establish a new National League record.

1962: Steve Boros matches the American League record for most errors in an inning by a 3B with 4, but Detroit beats Cleveland 8 - 5 as Al Kaline hits two home runs.

1963: Warren Spahn's 601st start is a modern National League record. Grover Alexander had the previous record of 600. The Braves beat the Dodgers, 6 - 1.

1966: Rare footage from The Beatles concert at Shea Stadium during their final U.S. tour.

1968: Stan Bahnsen outpitches Earl Wilson to give the host Yankees a 2 - 1 win over Detroit. The two teams then battle for 19 innings, before the second game is suspended by curfew with the score 3 - 3. The game will be finished tomorrow. In the long tie, Lindy McDaniel retires 21 straight Tiger batters, six on strikeouts. In his last three relief appearances, he has retired 30 batters in a row.

1972: Chicago's Dick Allen becomes the 4th major league player (Jimmie Foxx, Hank Greenberg, and Alex Johnson are the others) to hit one into the CF bleachers in Comiskey Park when he connects off New York's Lindy McDaniel. The 2-run homer in the 7th ices the 5 - 2 win for the Sox. This year, all the Chicago Wednesday games are in the afternoon, and Harry Caray announces them while sitting in the CF bleachers. Allen's drive misses Caray by just a few rows.

1976: A sign marking Tiger Stadium as a state historic site is unveiled.
The sign was stolen after Tiger Stadium closed and has never been found.

1981: The Minnesota Twins traded Ron Jackson to the Detroit Tigers for a player to be named later. The Detroit Tigers sent Tim Corcoran (September 4, 1981) to the Minnesota Twins to complete the trade.

1981: Rick Peters hits a pinch hit walk-off single to give the Tigers their 9th straight win 5 -4 over the rangers.

1983: The Detroit Tigers purchased Glenn Abbott from the Seattle Mariners for $100,000.

1998: Giants OF Barry Bonds hits his 26th homer, the 400th of his career, off Kirt Ojala of the Marlins in the Giants' 10 - 5 victory. He thus becomes the first player in major league history with more than 400 career home runs and 400 career steals.

1999: The Yankees score six runs in the 1st inning on their way to a 21 - 3 victory over the Rangers. 3B Scott Brosius (6) and C Joe Girardi (7) - the 8th and 9th batters in the New York lineup - drive in 13 of the Yankee runs.
Derek Jeter scores his 100th run of the year, the first Yank to string together four straight seasons of 100+ runs since Mickey Mantle did it in nine straight seasons (1953-1961).

1999: Joining Babe Ruth and Mark McGwire, Mariner outfielder Ken Griffey, Jr. becomes the third player in major league history to hit 200 homers in a four-season span. Junior's 39th helps Seattle beat the Indians, 4 - 1.

2000: At Comerica Park, fans flee their seats as swarms of small insects invade the stands during the 1st inning.
The six-legged pests do not affect the players, and the game continues uninterrupted with the Tigers edging the Mariners, 6 - 5.

2003: Tigers lose their 11th straight a 14 - 8 loss to the angels. It will be their longest losing streak in a 119-loss season.

2007: The Detroit Tigers traded Craig Monroe and cash to the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named later. The Chicago Cubs sent Clay Rapada (August 30, 2007) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

2012: The San Diego Padres selected Thad Weber off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

2012: Justin Verlander strikes out 12 in 9 innings; Tigers win 3 - 2 over the blue jays on Alex Avila walk-off single in the 11th.

2019: For the second time this year, Jacob deGrom strikes out at least 13 batters and also homers in a game, limiting the Braves to 1 run over 7 innings. However, his long ball is the only offense for the Mets tonight, who go on to lose the game, 2 - 1, in 14 innings on Billy Hamilton's first hit with Atlanta. DeGrom records his 200th K of the year in the game, as New York's pitchers combine for a total of 26, tying the major league record for an extra-inning game. Before deGrom did it twice in a season, no pitcher had ever struck out 13 or more batters and homered in the same game more than once in his career. For Atlanta, Ronald Acuna becomes the second youngest player to record a 30-30 season, after Mike Trout.

2023: The Angels get a double dose of bad news as they announce that two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani will not pitch again this year after being diagnosed with a ligament tear in his elbow, and that OF Mike Trout would need to return to the injured list after only one game back from a broken hamate bone in his left hand that had sidelined him since early July.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers continue to improve their performance during the 2024 season. Their roster has changed significantly over the course of the year.
If we don’t include pitching, there have been changes at all 8 positions. Overall, there have been 25 new players added to the roster this year.

So which ones have surprised me the most? I’ve got my 5.
Just note that if they were performing well last year, they didn’t make the list. It’s about which ones surprised me. It’s why you won’t see Riley Greene or Kerry Carpenter on it.
You also won’t see players like Reese Olson who has been on the IL for awhile and would have made it otherwise. Or others with just too few plate appearances or games started.
So which players surprised me the most?

1904: In Chicago, Christy Mathewson blanks the Cubs on three hits and the Giants defeat Buttons Briggs, 3 - 0. The second game is called after 10 innings with the score 2 - 2. Chicago fans show their feelings towards the Giants by tossing bottles onto the field. RF George Browne is hit on the leg and is almost hit in the head while chasing a fly ball. John McGraw tells ump Bob Emslie that he will not allow his team to continue play until all the broken glass is cleared, and by the time that occurs it is too dark to continue play.

1904: The Highlanders' Willie Keeler collects two home runs against the St. Louis Browns in a 9 - 1 win at New York. Both drives are inside-the-park.

1905: The Detroit Tigers purchased Ty Cobb from Augusta (South Atlantic).
In less than a week, Ty Cobb will begin his ascent on the Major Leagues Baseball records book that ends after 24 seasons and Cobb holding over 90 Major League records with many still standing today.

1905: The Giants win their 12th straight over the Reds, as Christy Mathewson wins easily, 8 - 0. Matty allows two scratch hits. The second game is called on account of darkness, 6 - 6, after nine innings.

Cobb intentional spikes 3B Frank Baker on his bare hand during the play, prompting howls of protest from the Athletics. On the field Walsh will be 18-20 despite a league-leading 1.27 ERA, the only time a pitcher with a losing record loses 20 and leads either league in ERA. Nolan Ryan will duplicate this in 1987 with the Houston Astros.

1930: New York's Fred Lindstrom has his 24-game hitting streak stopped as the Giants lose to the Cubs, 3 - 2. The game is tied 2-all in the bottom of the 9th, when the Cubs load the bases with two out. 1938: Signed by the Tigers and beginning his pro career in 1938 with the Detroit Tigers,
Virgil Trucks strikes out his 418th batter - the highest season total in organized ball this century - for Andalusia in an Alabama-Florida League game. Becoming a two-time All-Star and throwing a pair of no-hitters during his career both in 1952.

1947: Babe Ruth poses with Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker during the first Old Timers' Day at Yankee Stadium!

1948: The second 1948 East-West Game is held at Yankee Stadium. The East wins, 6-1, behind five-hit pitching by Max Manning, Dave Barnhill and Joe Black. 13 players in this contest would spend time in the major leaguers, a record for an East-West Game.

1951: New York Yankees rookie Mickey Mantle wears #7 for the first time. After being sent down to the minors for six weeks, Mickey returned to the team to find that the #6 he previously wore had been given to Bobby Brown.

1969: At St. Louis, Hank Aaron belts a 14th inning 3-run homer to give the Braves a 4 - 1 win over the Cards. There are no stolen bases in the game, though Bob Didier and Tim McCarver throw out six would-be thieves between them.

1976: At Tiger Stadium Bill Freehan hits his 200th and final home run in a 12 - 7 loss to the White Sox. The Detroit catcher will finish his career with 100 homers hit at home and the other 100 homers hit on the road.

1979: The Phillies retire Richie Ashburn's uniform number 1. His uniform number is the first to be retired at Veterans Stadium.

1983: Jack Morris strikes out 9, on route to career high and AL-best 232 on the season in the Tigers 5 - 2 win over the rangers.

1989: After weeks of legal wrangling, Commissioner Bart Giamatti permanently bans Pete Rose from baseball for his alleged gambling on major league games. Although the 5-page document signed by both parties includes no formal findings, Giamatti says that he considers Rose's acceptance of the ban to be a no-contest plea to the charges.
Coach Tommy Helms is named Rose's interim replacement as Cincinnati manager.

1990: Alan Trammell hits 3 doubles and Cecil Fielder has 2 two-baggers, but the Tigers lose to Oakland 6-4.

1991: Skeeter Barnes hits a home run and an RBI single in the Tigers' 7-2 win over Seattle.

2004: Bud Selig, citing how disruptive a delay in the major league schedule would be on pennant races, says it is unlikely that major league players will ever be able to take part in the Olympics. The baseball commissioner hopes a "World Cup", which begins in 2006, will serve as a substitute for the Summer Games.

2006: Sean Casey is thrown out at first base from left field in a Tigers loss to the white sox.

2007: Carlos Guillen hits a walk-off home run in the 11th inning. The game started after 4-hour rain delay and ended at 3:30 a.m. with the Tigers winning 9 - 6 over the yankees.

2013: In the first-ever regular season rematch of All-Star Game starting pitchers, Max Scherzer hits an RBI double off Matt Harvey. Scherzer becomes the 3rd MLB pitcher to win 19 of his first 20 starts (Rube Marquard, 1912, & Roger Clemens, 2001) and Tigers win 3 - 0.

2014: Tigers set a franchise record with 60 hits in a four-game series, against the Twins. Rajai Davis and Victor Martinez go deep in a 13-4 win.

Things start to get ugly in the 6th when New York pitcher Tommy Kahnle throws a pitch behind Miguel Cabrera's head. Kahnle gets ejected, as does manager Joe Girardi who comes out to protest, and C Austin Romine and Cabrera after they get into a heated argument that see the two exchange blows and end up wrestling on the ground as both benches empty.
After both teams score three runs in the 7th, Dellin Betances hits Detroit's James McCann with a fastball in the head, and Betances and coach Rob Thomson are both tossed. In the 8th, the Tigers' Alex Wilson plunks Todd Frazier and is ejected as well, along with manager Brad Ausmus.
When the dust settles, the Tigers win the game, 10 - 6. Five participants will receive suspensions as a result: 7 games for Cabrera for inciting the initial brawl, 4 games for Wilson, 1 for Ausmus, 4 games for Yankees player Gary Sanchez for throwing punches during the brawl, and 2 for Romine.
MLB's head of discipline and yankee's friend Joe Torre refuses to suspend Kahnle or Bettances for their headhunting tactics, nor does Torre suspend huge piece of shit Aaron Judge for his part in piling on Cabrera while on the ground and throwing punches to Cabrera's throat and back with Miggy's two herniated disc.

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

Before spring training, the Detroit Tigers signed 2Ber Colt Keith to a 6-year contract. He was the Tigers #2 prospect and ranked #22 overall by MLB.
The contract covers 6 years and guarantees Keith $28.6 mill (+ incentives) in total. His salary this year is $2.5 mill and it goes up incrementally every year to 2029 when he will be making $5 mill/year.
After 2029, there are 3 team (not player) options that run from $10mill – $15 mill. Should the Tigers not want to continue having him on their roster, there are minimal buyout clauses after each year.

After the expected slow start to his rookie year, Keith has improved significantly. He trails only Greene, Vierling and Carpenter in HRs. The latter has only 1 more HR than Colt. He ranks #2 in RBIs.
He has the 3rd best BA and his overall slash line ranks among the top players.

However, he’s had some issues with his shoulder, prompting the Tigers to move him from 3B to 2B. He is currently -10 DRS at that position but he is not the worst 2B defensively in MLB. He only started playing 2B in earnest last year and has shown improvement since his debut.

Now that Keith has had a chance to play, what are your thoughts about the Tigers buying out all of his team controlled years – and potentially beyond?

How do you feel now about the Tigers buying out Colt Keith's contract?

1. It was a really smart move.

2. A little too soon to tell but I'm leaning towards it being a good move.

3. Not a good move.

The Tigers have announced the following roster moves:
Placed INF Javier Báez on the 10-day injured list (lumbar spine and hip inflammation).
Recalled INF Ryan Kreidler from Triple A Toledo.

The Tigers placed shortstop Javier Baez on the 10-day injured list yesterday, calling up Ryan Kriedler from Triple-A to fill the void in the infield. It is the second time this season that Baez has been sent to the IL due to lumbar inflammation, though this latest placement also involves inflammation in his right hip. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told reporters (including Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press) that “we haven’t gotten the full diagnosis” on Baez’s injuries yet, but the team should shortly “know a little bit more about what the next month looks like and what, if any, baseball activity he’ll be able to do.”

That doesn’t sound like it bodes well for Baez’s chances of returning in 2024, as the Tigers have only the faintest hopes of a wild card berth and might just choose to shut Baez down to get him ready for next year. While injuries have contributed to Baez’s struggles this season, his .184/.221/.294 slash line over 289 plate appearances marks the third straight disastrous year for Baez since coming to Detroit on a six-year, $140MM free agent deal in the 2021-22 offseason. With $73MM still owed to Baez over the 2025-27 seasons, the contract is already an albatross, and it remains to be seen exactly how much longer the Tigers still stick with Baez as a regular part of their lineup (or whether they could release him altogether).
