November 28 in Tigers and mlb history:

1920: Ty Cobb ended his nearly two-month long West Coast barnstorming tour.

1927: The Pittsburgh Pirates trade future Hall of Fame outfielder Kiki Cuyler to the Chicago Cubs for infielder Sparky Adams and outfielder Pete Scott. Cuyler, who had drawn the wrath of manager Donie Bush for his failure to slide in a game, will hit only .285 next season, well below his lifetime average of .321.
He became expendable after rookie Lloyd Waner became a starter, but will be a great addition to the Cubs.

1934: Hollywood (PCL) purchased Gene Desautels from the Detroit Tigers.

1944: Detroit Tigers Ace Pitcher Hal Newhouser is named Most Valuable Player in the American League, gathering four more votes than teammate Dizzy Trout. Newhouser's 29 wins contrast with his 34 combined wins the previous four years, His 2.22 ERA is bettered by Trout (2.12), who also has 27 wins.

1950: Having already relieved general manager Branch Rickey of his duties, Brooklyn Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley continues his house cleaning as he names Pacific Coast League Oakland manager Chuck Dressen to replace Burt Shotton, who compiled a 326-215 record during his four-year tenure as the Dodgers skipper.

1957: Warren Spahn of the Milwaukee Braves wins the Cy Young Award as the major leagues' top pitcher almost unanimously. His only competition for the title is Dick Donovan, of the Chicago White Sox, who receives one vote.

1958: The American League announces that its Opening Day will be April 9th, making it the earliest date ever to open the junior circuit's regular season.

1958: The Boston Red Sox sign teenage sensation Carl Yastrzemski to a reported bonus of $100,000. The future Hall of Famer will make his major league debut with Boston in three years.

1960: The Detroit Tigers drafted Jim Donohue from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1960 rule 5 draft.
1960: The Baltimore Orioles drafted Hank Foiles from the Detroit Tigers in the 1960 rule 5 draft.

1962: The Detroit Tigers traded Steve Boros to the Chicago Cubs for Bob Anderson.

1966: The California Angels drafted Rickey Clark from the Detroit Tigers in the 1966 rule 5 draft.
1966: The New York Mets drafted John Sullivan from the Detroit Tigers in the 1966 rule 5 draft.

1966: The Pittsburgh Pirates purchase P Juan Pizarro from the Chicago White Sox, completing a deal that sends P Wilbur Wood to Chicago. The knuckle balling Wood was 14-8 for Columbus in 1966 after going 1-3 for the Pirates over the previous two years.

1967: The Pittsburgh Pirates traded Dennis Ribant to the Detroit Tigers for Dave Wickersham.

1972: In a blockbuster interstate trade good for both teams, the Los Angeles Dodgers send Frank Robinson, Bill Singer, Mike Strahler, Bobby Valentine and Bill Grabarkewitz to the California Angels in exchange for Andy Messersmith and Ken McMullen, who returns to the team that signed him. Next season, Robinson will play 147 games, hitting 30 home runs with 97 RBI and Singer will combine with Nolan Ryan to strike out 674 batters, a 20th Century major league record for two teammates. Messersmith will win 39 games in the next two seasons for the Dodgers and finish second in the Cy Young Award voting in 1974.

1973: Baltimore Orioles outfielder Al Bumbry beats out five other vote-getters to win American League Rookie of the Year honors. Bumbry played just 110 games, but tied for the AL lead in triples (11) and batted .337.

1978: The Cincinnati Reds fire their nine-year manager, Sparky Anderson, who had led the team to five Division titles, four National League pennants and two World Championships (in 1975 and 1976), and averaged 96 wins per season. The surprise move comes six days after the Reds return from a trip to Japan. Anderson has one year left on a contract and had no idea he'd be fired. He will become the manager of the Detroit Tigers on June 12, 1979, replacing Les Moss.

2015: Mike Hessman retires. The former Tiger holds the all-time minor-league career home run record with 433.

2016: Representatives of the Players' Association and major league owners meet in Irving, TX to renew the Collective bargaining agreement, which is set to expire at the end of the week. At issue are free agent compensation and particularly the qualifying offer system, the possibility of extending the amateur draft to international players, a possible raise in the threshold for luxury tax payments, roster size, the level of the minimum salary, revenue sharing and salary arbitration.

2021: It's a wild day of free agent signings in Major League Baseball, belying fears that the upcoming expiration of the Collective Bargaining Agreement would make teams hesitant to commit to new players.

2023: The Detroit Tigers signed Kenta Maeda as a free agent.

November 29 in Tigers and mlb history:

1910: The Havana Reds beat the Detroit Tigers, 3 - 0, behind Chiche Gonzalez's 5-hitter. Ty Cobb goes 0 for 3 and is caught stealing by Bruce Petway. The story is later blown out of proportion to claim Cobb was caught 3 times, when in fact this is the only recorded steal attempt he had in five games in Cuba that winter.

1916: In Kansas City, MO, Walter Johnson and Grover Cleveland Alexander face each other for the first time. The exhibition game between the two stars features Zach Wheat, Casey Stengel, Max Carey, Hal Chase and others.
The "Johnsons" prevail over the "Alexanders", 3 - 2.

1917: The Detroit Heralds lose to Jim Thorpe and the Canton Bulldogs 7-0 in an Ohio League football game on Thanskgiving Day in front of 8,000 fans at Navin Field (Tiger Stadium).
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FEzqJ-VW...png&name=small

1923: A Great Ball Player for many years, a Man who is now rightly in the HOF, Minnie Minoso born on this day in Perico, Matanzas, Cuba.

1926: Tris Speaker resigns as Indians manager. Stories of a thrown game and betting on games by Ty Cobb and Speaker gain momentum when Judge Landis holds a secret hearing with the two stars and former P-OF Joe Wood. The story and testimony will not be released until December 21.
Former Tiger P Dutch Leonard wrote to Harry Heilmann that he had turned over letters written to him by Wood and Cobb to American League president Ban Johnson, implicating the two in betting on a Tiger-Cleveland game played in Detroit, MI, on September 25, 1919. He charged that Cobb and Speaker conspired to let Detroit win to help them gain 3rd-place money.
At a secret meeting of AL directors, it was decided to let Cobb and Speaker resign with no publicity. But, as rumors spread, Judge Landis takes charge of the matter and holds the hearings, at which Leonard refuses to appear. Cobb and Wood admit to the letters, but say it was a horse racing bet, and contend Leonard is angry for having been released to the Pacific Coast League by Cobb. Speaker, not named in the letters, denies everything.
Public sympathy is with the stars, but the matter will remain unresolved until January of next year.

1939: Judge Landis fines Brooklyn, Detroit, and the St. Louis farm club, Columbus, for manipulating player contracts. He frees seven farmhands.

1962: After 61 years, the American Association (AAA) folds, with some of the franchises being absorbed by the International League and the Pacific Coast League. The PCL adds the Dallas-Fort Worth, TX, Denver, CO and Oklahoma City, OK clubs and drops the Vancouver, BC club. The International League adds the Indianapolis, IN and Little Rock, AR clubs. As a result, both leagues became ten-club leagues. The American Association will re-form after expansion in 1969.

1962: Major league officials and player representatives agree to return to a single All-Star Game in 1963.
The players' pension fund will receive 95 percent of the one game's proceeds (rather than 60 percent of two games).

1965: The Philadelphia Phillies drafted Bruce Brubaker from the Detroit Tigers in the 1965 rule 5 draft.
1965: The Detroit Tigers drafted Orlando McFarlane from the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1965 rule 5 draft.

1966: The Detroit Tigers drafted Fred Lasher from the Minnesota Twins in the 1966 minor league draft.

1967: The Detroit Tigers traded Chris Cannizzaro to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Mike Derrick.

1969: Happy Birthday to Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera, born this day in Panama City, Panama.

1971: In three blockbuster deals, the Cubs trade P Ken Holtzman to the A's for OF Rick Monday; the Giants trade P Gaylord Perry and SS Frank Duffy to the Indians for P Sam McDowell;
and the Reds trade 1B Lee May, 2B Tommy Helms, and OF Jimmy Stewart to the Astros for 2B Joe Morgan, OF Cesar Geronimo, and P Jack Billingham.
This last trade, criticized in the Cincinnati press, is one of the best in Reds history, and puts the wheels on the Big Red Machine, as future Hall of Fame member Morgan will win two MVP Awards with the team.

1975: Two Orioles standouts, with a combined total of 24 Gold Glove Awards, are each honored for the last time. Brooks Robinson and Paul Blair are the two making swan songs on The Sporting News fielding team.

1976: The Yankees sign free agent Reggie Jackson to five-year, $3.5 million dollar contract. During "Mr. October"'s tenure, the Bronx Bombers will win four division titles, three pennants and two World Series.

1979: Commissioner Bowie Kuhn lets Billy Martin off with a warning, following the October 23rd barroom altercation with a marshmallow salesman.

1994: The Detroit Tigers signed Rob Lukachyk as a free agent.

1999: The Detroit Tigers signed Mike Oquist as a free agent.

2000: The Detroit Tigers signed Tommy Phelps as a free agent.

2002: The Detroit Tigers signed Ernie Young as a free agent.

2010: The Detroit Tigers signed Scott Thorman as a free agent.

2014: The Detroit Tigers signed Rafael Dolis as a free agent.

2015: The Tigers sign free agent pitcher Jordan Zimmermann to a five-year contract worth $110 million. Zimmerman will give the Tigers one good month and be a bust for the rest of his contract.

2021: The free agent signing frenzy continues as the Rangers make their third large signing of the off-season, inking SS Corey Seager for ten years and $325 million, while the Mariners add P Robbie Ray for five years at $115 million. The rumored deal between P Max Scherzer and the Mets is confirmed, for three years and $130 million, while the Braves add P Kirby Yates for two years and $8.25 million even though he did not pitch a single inning for the Blue Jays, who had given him a large contract before last season. Meanwhile, the Dodgers, reeling from the departure of both Seager and Scherzer, sign reliever Daniel Hudson, as a small consolation prize.

1999: Members of the Major League Umpires Association vote 57-35 to form a new union, with one vote voided because the umpire signed his ballot. The National Labor Relations Board will certify the election results in seven days, if there are no objections. But, Jerry Crawford, the president of the old union, says objections are likely to be filed.

2001: The major league's plan to contract by two teams next season is put into jeopardy by Minnesota courts. The state's Supreme Court refuses to grant the request for a speedy review of the appeal of the injunction which forces the Twins to play in 2002, and the appellate court sets the hearing for December 27th, a date many believe is too late to make the elimination of two teams a reality.
Unsure of their future, the Montreal Expos sign a one-year lease to play their home games of the 2002 season at Olympic Stadium. Due to the threat of being eliminated because of the proposed contraction of major league teams, the agreement gives the Expos the right to unilaterally cancel the contract.

Highlights of the deal include: a raise in the threshold for luxury tax payments to $195 million in 2017, gradually rising to reach $210 million in 2021; the All-Star Game will no longer determine home field advantage for the World Series; and teams will no longer forfeit a first-round pick in the amateur draft if they sign a premium free agent. There is no agreement on instituting an international draft; instead, teams will have an annual $6 million bonus pool limit for international signings.
The deal ensures that labor peace in MLB will have exceeded a quarter of a century by the time the agreement expires.

2018: Alex Wilson of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2021: Matthew Boyd of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2016: Major League Baseball owners and the Players' Association agree on a new five-year Collective Bargaining Agreement.

2021: With the self-imposed deadline of 11:59 pm on December 1st for completing negotiations of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement looming, teams are doubling down on signing free agents before a possible freeze, continuing a frenzy begun three days ago. The latest beneficiary of a huge contract is IF Javier Baez, who reportedly signs with the Tigers for six years and $150 million, already the sixth deal over $100 million this off-season.

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

Last week, the Detroit Tigers tendered super-utility player Zach McKinstry. He’s 29 years old and played in 118 games last year.
As expected, his offensive was on the weaker side but he was, by a very wide margin, the team’s best base stealer with solid plate discipline and fewer strikeouts. Defensively, he is a plus defender and played 6 different positions – more than any other player. He also has a plus WAR.
The vast majority of his time was spent in the infield, esp. at 3B. With 5 years of experience, he could be very helpful to Jace Jung. After 3B, he’s also played 2B and SS the most.
What do you think of the move to retain McKinstry?
