April 10 in Tigers and mlb history:

1911: New Orleans (Southern Association) purchased Jay Kirke from the Detroit Tigers.

1912: The RMS Titanic a British passenger liner, starts its maiden voyage from Pier 10, Southampton, en route to New York. As we all know the Titanic will not make it on April 15 at 2:20 am she will break apart and sink.

1913: In a game which features U.S. President Woodrow Wilson throwing out the first pitch, the New York Highlanders become the New York Yankees. Playing their first game under their new nickname, the Yankees lose to the Washington Senators, 2 - 1, as future Hall of Famer Walter Johnson picks up the win for Washington. After giving up an unearned run in the 1st inning, Johnson begins a string of shutout innings that will reach a major league record 56 before the St. Louis Browns score in the 4th inning on May 14th.

1930: Frank Lary is born in Northport, Alabama. Tigers pitcher 1954-64. Lary was called "Yankee Killer": he had a 27-10 record against the Yankees from 1955-61, a stretch when they won 6 pennants.

1947: In one of the most significant moments in baseball history, Jackie Robinson becomes the first black player of the 20th century to sign a major league contract. Robinson agrees a one-year deal with the Brooklyn Dodgers, whose general manager, Branch Rickey, personally recruited Robinson from the Negro Leagues.

1958: The Detroit Tigers purchased Jim Fridley from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

1959: The Detroit Tigers released Art Houtteman.

1959: On Opening Day at Briggs Stadium, Chicago White Sox second baseman Nellie Fox goes 5 for 7 and hits an unlikely 14th-inning two-run home run off Don Mossi to beat the Detroit Tigers, 9 - 7. Fox did not homer in 623 at-bats last season.

1962: Dodger Stadium, the first major league ballpark privately financed since Yankee Stadium opened in 1923, opens in Chavez Ravine. With 52,564 fans on hand, the Los Angeles Dodgers inaugurate the $22-million facility with a 6 - 3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.
Vin Scully talks about how the team had to use vegetable dye to make the grass look more green.

1962: At Colt Stadium, the Houston Colt .45s make their major league debut with an 11 - 2 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Houston right fielder Roman Mejias hits a pair of three-run home runs before a crowd of 25,271 fans. Bobby Shantz pitches a complete-game five-hitter and Don Cardwell is the loser. The Colt .45s and New York Mets join the National League as expansion teams this year.

1967: Detroit signs free agent Johnny Klippstein.
1967: The California Angels purchased Orlando McFarlane from the Detroit Tigers.

1968: Earl Wilson and Willie Horton are in starting lineup for Tigers home opener against Red Sox. Reggie Smith, George Scott and Elston Howard are among starters for Red Sox. In late 1950's, these teams were last two MLB clubs to suit up players of color.

1969: Bill Freehan hits 2 HRs including a grand slam. Mickey Stanley and Willie Horton also go deep in a 12-3 win over the indians at Tiger Stadium.

1977: At Fenway Park, the Cleveland Indians (13) and the Boston Red Sox (6) establish a major league record for the most runs scored by both teams in one inning. The 8th-inning barrage proves to be too much for Boston as Cleveland beats the home team, 19 - 9.

1981: In his first game for the Chicago White Sox, Carlton Fisk belts a three-run home run in the 8th inning to lead Chicago to a 5 - 3 victory over his former Red Sox teammates at Fenway Park.

1984: The Detroit Tigers signed Ruppert Jones to a free-agent contract on this day. The left-handed-hitting outfielder proceeded to log a 139 wRC+ in 237 plate appearances to help the Tigers capture the American League pennant, then beat the San Diego Padres Jones's previous team in the World Series.

1984: Home opener at Tiger Stadium. #Relive84 Tigers beat the Rangers 5-1 in home opener, are off to a 6-0 start.

1989: Ken Griffey, Jr. hits his first major league home run at the Kingdome in Seattle's 6 - 5 win over the White Sox. Griffey's father, Ken Sr., is an outfielder with the Cincinnati Reds, making the two the first father-son duo to play in the major leagues at the same time.

1990: Wade Boggs of the Boston Red Sox is intentionally walked three times, tying a major league mark for a nine-inning game.

1991: The Detroit Tigers signed Mitch Lyden as a free agent.

2000: On his father's 50th birthday, Ken Griffey, Jr. becomes the youngest player, at 30 years and 141 days, to hit 400 career home runs, beating the previous mark set by Jimmie Foxx, who was 30 years and 248 days old.

2003: By hitting his 31st career leadoff home run, Astros outfielder Craig Biggio breaks Bobby Bonds' National League record. The major league mark of 80 belongs to Rickey Henderson.

2006: The Detroit Tigers signed Tike Redman as a free agent.

2006: Jim Thome and Joe Crede hit two-run home runs and Paul Konerko adds a solo shot, leading the Chicago White Sox to a 5 - 3 victory in the Detroit Tigers' home opener.

2012: Austin Jackson takes future Tiger Matt Moore deep to left to tie the game. Tigers would go on to win 5-2 and move to 4-0 on the season.

2016: The @NavinFieldCrew hosts one last game at the site of Tiger Stadium before construction begins on a new facility. The site reopened last month as The Corner Ballpark.

2017: After a wait of 108 years, a two-hour rain delay pushes back the ceremony to raise the Cubs' 2016 World Championship banner at Wrigley Field a little bit more, but a boisterous sellout crowd is on hand to see 1B Anthony Rizzo being the first player to raise the flag and to take the World Series Trophy on the field. Rizzo is then the hero of the home opener, as his 9th-inning single off Kenley Jansen of the Dodgers drives in the winning run in a 3 - 2 win.

2018: Matt Boyd holds Cleveland to 3 hits and 1 run over 7 innings, but the Tigers lose 2-1. They become the first major league team since 1933 to have 4 losses in their first 10 games in each of which they allowed 2 or fewer runs.

2020: With no baseball being played because of the coronavirus pandemic, MLB sets up a virtual league, with one player from each of the 30 teams playing a three-inning game on the video game platform MLB: The Show against his 29 opponents. 1961: Jake Wood hits a 2-run home run in his major league debut at Tiger Stadium. After years of shameful foot-dragging on integration, Wood becomes the Tigers' first African American to be a regular starter. Al Kaline hits a two-run triple. But Cleveland scores 6 runs off Jim Bunning in the second inning.

1965: The Detroit Tigers released Billy Hoeft.

1966: The Detroit Tigers purchased Mike Marshall from the Philadelphia Phillies.

1975: Hank Aaron returns to Milwaukee as a member of the Brewers. A crowd of 48,160 fans watches Aaron drive in a run in the Brewers' victory over the Cleveland Indians. Aaron starred for the Milwaukee Braves before the franchise moved to Atlanta, GA. in 1966.

Ogando has not allowed a run in 13 innings this year. Miguel Cabrera hits his 300th double, becoming the second major leaguer to tally that many before his 28th birthday (Joe Medwick was the first).

2018: Today's MLB action is marred by a couple of bench-clearing brawls. In the Yankees' 10 - 7 win over Boston, Tyler Austin charges the mound after Joe Kelly drills him with a 97 mph fastball in the 7th; he suspects that the pitch is in retaliation for a hard slide he made into SS Brock Holt, in the 3rd, which also cleared the two benches. Both Austin and Kelly are ejected, as are Yankees third base coach Phil Nevin and reliever Tommy Kahnle.

2021: One day after going on the injured list with an adverse reaction to receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, J.D. Martinez is back in the line-up for the Red Sox and has the third three-homer game of his career in a 14 - 9 win over the Orioles. FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers’ roster continues to change as stopgap contracts end and young prospects come up from Toledo. The franchise has a record number of top 100 MLB prospects who should be seeing Detroit within the next 1-2 years.
And as such, there will be a number of players on this roster who won’t be here in a couple years.
There will be different evaluation methods for who stays and who goes when it comes to pitching and positional players. Today, we’re going to focus on the latter.
Which positional players are most likely to still be on the roster in 2 years – the 2027 season? Since this is Friday, our list is only going to include the 5 most likely.
As I considered the list, I kept these qualifiers in mind:
1. age.
2. player’s agent (automatic disqualifier if it is Scott Boras and the player is close to becoming a free agent).
3. team’s fast-track system that is focusing on developing catchers, middle infielders quickly.
4. current rookies struggling.
