Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

Peralta goes on paternity leave.
Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta was placed on Major League Baseball's paternity leave list Saturday so that he could be with his wife, who's due to give birth to twins.
Peralta didn't have far to go, since he and his wife make their home in Cleveland for much of the year. So Peralta won't have far to travel to rejoin the team, but there's no timetable on that.
With Peralta out, the Tigers were down to Ramon Santiago and Danny Worth in the middle infield, with Matt Young a potential substitute at second base. Santiago started at shortstop Saturday, with Worth at second.
The paternity leave list allows a player to be replaced on the roster for up to three days. The Tigers' problem was that they only have two other middle infielders on their 40-man roster not currently with the big club. Ryan Raburn is one, and he's out with a hamstring injury. Thus, Detroit called up second-base prospect Hernan Perez from Class A Lakeland.

Laird showing improved discipline when hitting.
Gerald Laird's two-hit game Friday night brought his season hit total to 17 in 59 at-bats. He managed 22 hits over 95 at-bats for all of last season, and 56 over 270 at-bats the last time he was a Tiger in 2010.
When he hit early, it looked like a season-opening hot streak. At this point, though, Tigers officials are comfortable saying that Laird is a better hitter than he used to be.
Is he a .300 hitter? Probably not, though his average stood at .315 entering Saturday's start against the Reds. But he appears to be a better hitter -- or at least a smarter one who knows his limitations.
"He's laying off high fastballs out of the strike zone," manager Jim Leyland said. "He's disciplined himself. He looks good.
"He's aware. He's not trying to hit home runs. He's trying to put a good swing on the ball."
Considering Laird is going to be the regular starter behind the plate for at least the next week while Alex Avila tries to work his way back from a hamstring strain, that's a good thing.

Not easy...but Tigers grind out 3-2 win over Reds...Prince Fielder delivers game-winner with big 2-out RBI single in 8th.

Starting in 6th spot in lineup for just 2nd time in career, Santiago hit solo HR in 2nd (his 2nd) to give Tigers early 1-0 lead...

Fielder HR (10th) in 4th made it 2-0...Reds tied it during a 4th that had a little bit of everything...Heisey started inning with single..

Votto hit fly ball misplayed by Young in LF, called a double. W/ one out, Verlander threw four 100MPH fb to Bruce, and K'd him swinging...

Then Verlander walked Ludwick on 4 pitches...Frazier hit a 101MPH fb to RF for 2-run single to tie the game, 2-2...

Reds fouled off a ton of 2-strike pitches - 24 by my count...and Verlander's needed 67 pitches to get thru the 4th and 5th...

but - at 113 P - came out for 6th, worked a 1-2-3 inning, and finished day with his 9th strikeout - callled third strike on Hanigan...

Villarreal walked two and had two wild pitches in 7th - but got Phillips on routine FB to CF to end inning...Benoit worked 1-2-3 8th....

Valverde closed it out with a 1-2-3 9th, 3rd straight 1-2-3 appearance, and 4th 1-2-3 save of the year...

Tigers winning rally in 8th started w/ two-out double off CF wall by Boesch....Reds walked Cabrera, so LHP Marshall could pitch to Fielder.

LHB were 3-22 (.136) against Marshall...but Fielder jumped on first pitch, singled to CF to score Boesch, who slid in just ahead of throw...

Fielder now has 23RBI last 25G, hitting .381. Boesch is 6-12 last three games with two doubles, HR and 3RBI.

Verlander's final line: 6IP, 6H, 2ER, 3W (one int.) with 9K - 127 pitches.
Win goes to Villarreal, his 2nd.

Tigers have chance to win just their 4th series in their last 16 tom. night - Smyly vs. Bailey. We're on the air at 7:40pm.

June 10 in Tigers history:

1903 - Detroit SS Kid Elberfeld? suspended for abusing an umpire? is traded to the New York Highlanders for veteran infielders Herman Long? 37? and Ernie Courtney. The Highlanders' first trade is a good one as "The Tabasco Kid"? currently hitting .341? will be a key ingredient in New York's rise as contenders in 1904. Elberfeld had also been accused by Tiger manager Ed Barrow of deliberately throwing games recently as a ploy to get himself traded.

1957: Frank Lary gives up a 3rd-inning homer to Mickey Mantle in Detroit? but still beats the Yankees? 9 - 4. Mantle now leads the American League with 15 homers. Tigers homerun hitter for the day include Harvey Kuenn SS, 2 from Charlie Maxwell LF, and Al Kaline CF.

1958 - The Tigers fire manager Jack Tighe after a 21 and 28 start to the season? replacing him with Bill Norman.

1984: At Baltimore, the Tigers sweep two from the Orioles? winning 10 - 4 and 8 - 0? before 51?764 fans. Kirk Gibson has six hits and six RBIs in the two games? while Alan Trammell and Howard Johnson each have 5 hits. Lou Whitaker scores 5 runs in game 1. Reliever Doug Bair wins the opener and Dan Petry allows just 3 hits in the nitecap win. The Tigers record now is at 43 and 14, as they continue to steamroll through the league on their way to an historic season.
