Tigers infielder Danny Worth was optioned to Triple-A Toledo after Saturday's 6-4 victory over the Twins with utility man Don Kelly set to rejoin the club Sunday.

Kelly was away from the club for the first two games of the weekend to be with his wife, Carrie, who gave birth Friday morning to their second child.

Worth, who was called up to fill Kelly's spot on the roster, played Friday night as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning at second base. In 19 games (seven starts) this year for the Tigers, Worth is batting .300 (9-for-30) with two doubles and three RBIs.

Tigers IF Carlos Guillen will be with the Mud Hens the next few days. Guillen went on Detroit's disabled list Aug. 14 with a sore left wrist. He will work out with the Mud Hens today and tomorrow, then begin a rehab assignment Monday. He is here today but did not take regular batting practice. Speaking of which ...

OF Clete Thomas took batting practice today and didn't seem to have any problems with his fractured left index finger. If my understanding is correct, Thomas will need to have an X-ray before he can come off the disabled list, but I would not be surprised to see him activated soon.

OF Andy Dirks did not take batting practice, but he did work on some soft-toss batting before the game. Dirks remains on the active roster with a hand injury, but he again is not in the Toledo lineup. He did pinch-run and play in the outfield yesterday, but he still is not fully ready to hit.

The news also is good for LHP Adam Wilk, who went on the disabled list Aug. 17 with elbow problems. He threw a bullpen today and manager Phil Nevin said he threw well and without problems. If there are no setbacks tomorrow, look for Wilk to come off the disabled list very soon.

August 28 in Tigers and mlb history :

1961: At Washington, Rocky Colavito and Al Kaline belt 1st-inning homers as Detroit wins 7 - 3 to cut New York's lead to 1 1/2 games. Rocky now has 39 homers and 120 RBIs. Jake Wood hits a 6th inning grand slam to complete the scoring for Detroit.

1969: Detroit OF Jim Northrup goes 6 for 6, the first 6-hit game for Detroit since June 24, 1962, as the Tigers beat the A's, 5 - 3. Northrup's 6th hit is a home run over the roof in the bottom of the 13th to win the game.

2000: The Players' association exercises its option to extend the Collective bargaining agreement, ensuring labor peace through October 31, 2001. The expected move comes as no surprise as the players appear to be happy with the November 1996 deal, but the owners have expressed concerns the present CBA has widened the talent gap between the high and low-revenue markets due to escalating salaries.

Despite one of his lesser outings (2nd-lowest Game Score of the year), Justin Verlander still collected his 20th win, thanks to a late rally after he'd wasted a lead. Detroit has won 8 of 9, keeping the pressure on Cleveland, who won to remain 6.5 GB.

Verlander has won 8 straight starts and 16 of 18. The only longer streak by a Tiger since 1947 was 9 straight by Denny McLain in '68. The last longer one-season streak in the majors was 9 by Brandon Webb to open the 2008 season.
It's the Tigers' 1st 20-win year since Bill Gullickson in 1991, and the 4rd in the last 38 years; Jack Morris did it in 1983 and '86.

I understand wanting him to pitch against Chicago but why give your number one stud an extra day. He gave JV an extra day last week as well. Suppose to pitch them more not less. That KC game is important too. It would be nice to see Turner again though.
