Tigers 4 - White Sox 2: Justin Verlander + 2 out RBI hits = 1/2 game out of 1st place.
from blessyouboystigersblog

Congratulations to Phil Coke on the birth of his first child! As you might guess, he was not with the Tigers tonight.
With the victory, the Tigers are now 6 games over .500 at 50-44.
They are 11-2 in their last 13 games, an .842 clip. They are 12-4 for the month of July.
In their last 16 games against the White Sox at Comerica Park, the Tigers are now 13-3.
All 4 Tigers runs scored with 2 outs. No squandering!
Justin Verlander had thrown over 100 pitches in every start this season. Tonight was no different, Verlander hit 100 pitches with 2 out in the 7th inning.
Speaking of streaks, Verlander's streak of 6+ inning starts has reached 62 consecutive games.
Stats via the ever entertaining Matthew B. Mowery of The Oakland Press: The Big 3 in the Tigers rotation, Doug Fister, Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, have been sterling over the past 3 games: 23 IP, 9 H, 4 ER (1.56 ERA), 25K, 8 BB.
De Aza's home run was his 6th of the season, a career high. That's Verlander for you, allowing home runs to those you least expect. Just ask Desmond Jennings...
There was an injury scare in the 8th involving Cabrera. He came up limping after going from 1st to 3rd on a single. You could hear the cries of "NOOOOOOOOO" across Tigerdom. He was checked out by Kevin Rand, but was left in the game. After being thrown out at home, Cabrera was still walking gingerly

Tigers move to within half-game of 1st with 4-2 win over W. Sox. Verlander 8 strong IP for 11th win, all 4R score on 2-out hits...

Sox took early lead on De Aza 2-run HR to RF off Verlander in 3rd...but Tigers came right back in bottom of 3rd against Peavy...

Tigers put first 2 on, but Jackson bounced into DP. Peralta was at third with two outs when Peavy - who was strong tonight - hit Berry.

Cabrera followed with RBI single to CF, Fielder soft GB single to CF tied game, then Young double scored Cabrera to make it 3-2.

Peavy and Verlander then traded zeros thru the middle innings. Peavy retired 11 in a row at one point, Verlander retired 16 of final 18.

Tigers defense good again - two superb plays - a Boesch diving catch in 7th, then Berry finished gm w/ diving grab of Konerko line drive.

Tigers now 13-4 last 17 Games at home, and 13-3 last 16 Games here vs. WhiteSox....this is closest Tigers have been to 1st place since May 1st...

National TV moves tomorrows game to 4pm...Porcello - who has 2 good starts vs. Sox this year - vs. C. Sale...on air at 3:40pm.

Fielders to host charity event August 2.
Prince Fielder and his wife, Chanel, will be hosting Uncork for a Cause, a special event on Thursday, Aug. 2 at Townsend Hotel to support two local non-profit organizations critical to the Detorit area.

They will team with Common Ground, a group dedicated to helping more than 50,000 people in Michigan -- youths, adults and families -- dealing with crisis for more than 40 years. And Ele's Place, an organization that provides a strong support system for families coping with losses of loved ones.

Guests will get the opportunity to meet the Fielders as well as purchase autographed bottles of his new wine, called 2010 Prince Fielder Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. It's a limited product as only two barrels were made.

Admission is $75 and includes food and drinks. For more information and to purchase tickets visit UncorkforaCause.com.

July 21 in Tigers and mlb history:

1936: Mickey Cochrane has a relapse, and Del Baker again takes charge of the Tigers. Detroit takes a pair from the visiting A's winning 8 - 0 behind Tommy Bridges, and 9 - 8 as Schoolboy Rowe wins in relief. The Tigers score a pair in the 8th inning when, with the bases loaded, Mickey Owen hits into a double play. Goose Goslin scores the tying run and Gee Walker, who reaches third base on the play, scores when 1B Chubby Dean is caught napping.

1945 - The Detroit Tigers and the Philadelphia Athletics battle to a 1 - 1 tie in 24 innings. Les Mueller hurls 19 2/3 innings for the Tigers. No hurler has matched this endurance feat.

1959 - Under intense public pressure and the Massachusetts Committee Against Discrimination investigation, the Red Sox become the last club to integrate. Fourteen years after the club passes on Jackie Robinson, despite a successful tryout in 1945, Elijah 'Pumpsie' Green pinch runs and plays shortstop to become the first black to play for the Red Sox. Tomorrow Green will go 0 for 3 against Early Wynn.

1969 - A gala All-Star Game banquet in Washington is one of baseball's great events. An all-time team and all-time living team are announced. Babe Ruth is selected Greatest All-Time Player, and Joe DiMaggio, Greatest Living Player.

1993: In Minnesota's win over Detroit, Tony Phillips goes 0 for 4 with two strikeouts against two Twins pitchers. It is his only game without a hit, walk or hit by pitch in a string of 101 games.

2008 - The Tigers beat the Royals 19 - 4. It is their third time scoring 19 or more runs this season, the first time a major league team had done that since the 1950 Red Sox. Miguel Cabrera drives in six and Matt Joyce five in the rout.

Tigers 4, White Sox 2: Detroit and the Central race are heating up, but Justin Verlander?s in the same groove he found in July 2010. He gave up a 2-run HR in the 3rd, but his mates answered with 3 in the home half off Jake Peavy (4 ER in 7 IP). The Tigers hit no HRs, but went 6 for 13 with RISP, including 3 in a row with 2 outs in that 3rd inning.
Detroit has won 11 of 13 and trails Chicago by just a half-game. They?ve scored 4 to 8 runs in 16 of their last 17 games.
The Sox will fire back Saturday with their young ace, Chris Sale (2.11 ERA, 4 runs in his last 4 starts). Detroit gave him one of his two losses back in April, but current Tigers are just 8 for 45 career off Sale.
Verlander since July 2010 (71 starts): 44-14, 2.50 ERA, 7.34 IP/G, 8.95 SO/9, 4.11 SO/BB. He?s gone 6+ IP in 62 straight starts. The next-longest streaks since 2010 are 42 by Roy Halladay and 32 by Jered Weaver and Brett Myers.
Maybe he should report in January? Verlander (who is once again the winningest pitcher since 2006) has an 11-15 record and 4.37 ERA in April, when legend says ?the pitchers are ahead of the hitters.? In all other months, he?s 107-47, 3.25.
With this win JV now has 118 wins as a Tiger, and is tied for 12th all-time with Tigers great Jim Bunning. Verlander also needs just 50 more strikeouts to move into 5th place all-time on the Tigers strikeouts list and past Bunning there as well.
