Detroit Tigers' Brayan Villarreal cleared to pitch after right elbow inflammation subsides.
from Mlive

Right-handed reliever Brayan Villarreal, who has been dealing with inflammation in his pitching elbow, said prior to Friday's game against the Orioles that he's feeling much better after his four-day break and will be available to pitch in the series opener.

"I threw a bullpen today and I felt great," Villarreal said. "[I threw] about 15 pitches just to get ready for the game tonight."
After uncharacteristically allowing three earned runs in back-to-back games last weekend in Texas -- he hadn't allowed more than one run in an outing this season -- the 25-year-old reported arm fatigue. As a result he underwent an MRI; the procedure revealed the inflammation.
Villarreal said that it wasn't the first time he experienced the issue this season, but similar to last time, he believes the days off will help.
"I threw the last day in Minnesota, like 90 feet, then I rested yesterday and I threw again tonight," he said. "Everything is healthy, [the inflammation] is down. I had it before, like a month and a half ago, then I did the same thing: stop for three days and come back."
Villarreal hasn't appeared in a game since Aug. 12, when he yielded two runs in one-third of an inning against the Rangers. In 37 1/3 innings he's allowed 10 runs -- five this month -- and has a 2.41 ERA.

Tigers ace Justin Verlander on pitching nearly as well as last year, and having vastly different results:
"Kind of. I was wary of that, not to get down whatever happens, just go out there and pitch. I don?t feel like I?ve pitched quite as well, but pitched pretty well. Obviously, the win-loss record isn?t there, but that?s pretty much it. I know that win-loss is something that?s way out of your control. You?ve just gotta go out there and try to keep your team in games, and do what?s to your ability."

Tigers manager Jim Leyland on three home runs combined from twosome of Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera:
"We got the big blows from the big guys, and there?s no defense for those. Turned the crowd around a little bit. Turned the team around, obviously. We needed that. We looked just a little bit stale. Miggy gets the first one right away and then Prince gets two of them. That?s a pretty good combination, those two guys, and obviously, they did what they do. Tonight, it was huge for us."
Leyland: "I don't know that I've ever seen any ball in my entire life hit any harder than the first one Prince hit. ... Just, pow."

Tigers issue traffic tips for Saturday

The Lions are playing in Baltimore tonight, but Ford Field is going to be hopping this weekend for Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw, who will be performing in concert in an event that begins at 4:30pm ET and is expected to run for most of the evening.

Put that traffic up with the Tigers game at 7:05 across the street, and you get the idea. The Tigers are estimating 85,000 people will be in attendance at two events separated by a two-lane street, so they issued a traffic advisory on Friday so fans could plan ahead.

If you?re driving downtown, the Olympia Development-owned parking lots east of Woodward Avenue will be reserved for fans attending the Tigers game. Fans will have to show a ticket or a parking pass, or they?ll need to have tickets waiting at will call. Tailgating in the lots will be prohibited in an effort to fit in as many fans as possible.

The Olympia Development-owned lots west of Woodward, on the other hand, are fair game for baseball fans and concert goers alike. Spots there will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

August 18 in Tigers history:

1907: Detroit's first Sunday game at home since 1902, and the first at Bennett Park, is a 16 - 3 win over New York.

1938: When Detroit's Billy Rogell walks his first time up, it is his seventh consecutive base on balls, a new American League record.

1961 - Ron Kline, purchased from the Angels on August 10, blanks the Red Sox on four hits to give the Tigers a 5 - 0 win. Bill Monbouquette fails for the 9th time to win his 9th, lasting just four innings and gives up homers to Billy Bruton and Rocky Colavito.

1984 - Detroit's Juan Berenguer goes 8 1/3 innings and strikes out 12 to give the Tigers a 4 - 3 victory over the Mariners. Kirk Gibson drives in three runs with his 20th homer of the year, and becomes the first Tiger ever to reach 20 in both homers and steals. Gibson's homer is his 15th game-winning RBI this year.
