Max Scherzer's Streak Unmatched by Any Pitcher in Tigers History
From Elias: Max Scherzer won his fifth straight start, holding the first-place White Sox scoreless over eight innings and striking out nine as the Tigers beat the Sox again, 5-1. Not only has Scherzer won five straight starts, but in each of them he has averaged more than one strikeout per inning and in none of them did he allow more than two runs. No other pitcher in Tigers history has won five straight starts with those accompanying statistics; and over the last 10 seasons, Scherzer is just the third major-leaguer to do it, joining Mike Mussina (in April and May of 2003) and Zack Greinke (in April and May of 2009, a streak of six such starts).

Scherzer compiled an ERA of 7.77 in April, followed by 4.04 in May, 3.86 in June, 3.62 in July and 2.25 in August. He's the only major-league qualifier this season whose ERA decreased in every calendar month from May through August--and with eight shutout innings on Saturday, he might maintain that ERA progression in the regular season's most important month.

September 2 in Tigers and mlb history:

1901 - Detroit sweeps a Labor Day doubleheader from Washington, picking up an American League record 21 infield assists in game 2. This is still the AL record. SS Kid Elberfeld has 12 assists to back up Roscoe Miller.

1909: Detroit completes a sweep of every series against visiting eastern teams, winning their 14th in a row to regain first place by a half game en route to their 3rd straight pennant.

1919 - The National Commission recommends a best-of-9 World Series. The lengthier series is seen as a sign of greed and is abandoned after three years.

1920 - Shaken by the possible effects of the scandal surrounding baseball, club owners begin a series of meetings to reform the game. Albert D. Lasker, a Chicago advertising man and minority stockholder, of the Cubs, proposes a 3-man board of non-baseball men, with the chairman to be paid $25,000 year. Among the names mentioned: Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, former president William Howard Taft, General George Pershing, Senator Hiram Johnson, General Leonard Wood, and ex-treasury secretary William McAdoo.

1970: Detroit's Gene Lamont homers in his first major league at bat, but the Red Sox this time hold the lead and beat the Tigers 10 - 1 in the nitecap. Cal Koonce is the complete game winner, adding two RBI with his second hit of the year. The Tigers win the opener 6 - 4 scoring two unearned runs in the 8th.

1973: The Tigers fire Billy Martin due to continuous differences with the front office.

1987: Indians lose to Detroit, 2 - 1. Matt Nokes' single with two out in the 8th is the Tigers' only hit.

Tigers, White Sox armed for a pitchers' duel tonight.
from the freep

Jim Bunning's 1958: The more this season goes along, the more we are learning that right-hander Jim Bunning had quite an eventful 1958 season for the Tigers.
We knew all along that Bunning pitched a no-hitter that season in Boston, with Ted Williams as the final out. When Verlander struck out 14 Yankees last month, we learned that the last Tiger to strike out that many Yankees was Bunning in '58. On Thursday night, when the Tigers lost, 2-1, in Kansas City while getting 12 hits, we discovered through Baseball-Reference.com that the last time they had at least 12 hits, didn't score more than one run and lost by one run was in 1958, and the losing pitcher was ... Bunning.

Max Scherzer was 8-5 with 4.72 ERA at All-Star break. He's 7-1, 2.76 since break after Tigers 5-1 win over whitesox.

Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder account for 35.3% of the Tigers? RBI this season, easily the highest % for any MLB duo.?

Tigers pitcher of the month: Max Scherzer. Tigers player of the month: Prince Fielder.

Per ELIAS SPORTS (via Tigers), Max Scherzer is 1st pitcher in club history to avg. 1K per IP in 5 straight wins, w/o allowing more than 2 runs in any game.

Prince and Miggy were 1, 2 in the AL in OPS, wOBA, and wRC in August.
