Detroit Tigers Team Notes

Granderson said much the same thing that Alex Avila just said: Verlander still has tendency to get wound up for big games (like win No. 20).

Jackson is making Tigers' offense go: finishes 3-5 with HR, 2RBI, now 9-14 last three games with 2HR, 4RBI and 7 runs.

Final line for Verlander (21-5): 7.1IP, 1ER on 7H, 1BB/6K. In last 50 yrs, there have been just 14 pitchers w/ 21+ wins, 5 or fewer losses.

Verlander has a 86.7 QS% (26/30). That's the second best QS% since 1991 for pitchers with 30+ starts. Hernandez was 88.2% (30/34) in 2010.

Tigers get win No. 21 for Justin Verlander, and Jim Leyland's 500th win as Detroit's manager.

Leyland said Carlos Guillen will play second base Saturday vs. WhiteSox Gavin Floyd.

Justin Verlander, Austin Jackson lead Tigers Over White Sox 8 - 1.
from detroittigertales

Tigers ace Justin Verlander pitched 7 1/3 innings allowing just one run on seven hits and a walk to lower his season ERA to 2.34

Verlander has 26 quality starts (6+ IP, 3 or fewer ER) in 30 games. His 86.7 quality start percentage (QS%) is the second best of any starter with 30 or more starts since 1991. The best QS% was by Felix Hernandez with 30 out of 34 (88.2 QS%) in 2010. Jered Weaver is second in the majors this year with an impressive 24/28 (85.7%).

Jackson is not striking out quite as much lately. After whiffing in 31% of his at bats through July, he has struck out in 21% of his at bats since then. These are all small sample sizes here, but it's something to watch in future games.

Tigers all-time manager win list:
Sparky Anderson, 1,331;
Hughie Jennings 1,131;
Bucky Harris 516;
Steve O'Neill 509;
Jim Leyland 500.

"That's something you focus on more with your family, but it is something I'm proud of - being only the fifth person to do that in over 100 years of baseball in Detroit," Leyland said.

Leyland asked about his 500th victory as Tigers manager: "Give credit where it's due. Justin Verlander has 104 of those."

Detroit Tigers Team Notes

Justin Verlander was superb again Friday, holding the White Sox to two one run on seven hits and a walk over 7 1/3 innings in an 8-1 win.
He struck out six.
It was puzzling to see Tigers manager Jim Leyland send Verlander back out for the eighth inning up 8-0 and nearing 100 pitches, and the right-hander wound up surrendering his lone run that inning.
Regardless, it was another terrific performance from the AL Cy Young favorite, as he moved to 21-5 while lowering his ERA to 2.34 and WHIP to 0.91. He
