Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

Miggy's Triple Crown hopes alive and well.
Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera finished Sunday's doubleheader 2-for-8, and his batting average dropped a point from .332 to .331. However, he remained in the lead for all three Triple Crown categories entering Monday's contest.

Despite only two hits, Cabrera added two more RBIs to improve his Major League-leading mark to 133, 10 RBIs ahead of Texas' Josh Hamilton (123) and 23 ahead of the next-closest hitter, Minnesota's Josh Willingham (110).

The two hits brought Cabrera's doubles total to 40, making the 29-year-old the second player in Tigers' history to reach the mark -- Hank Greenberg did it twice in 1937 and '40 -- and 35th player in MLB history.

Although Cabrera's average dropped, he continued to gain ground. Twins catcher Joe Mauer had reached .326 and was in striking distance after Sunday's first game against Detroit. Going hitless in the second game dropped Mauer to .323, tied with Angels outfielder Mike Trout.

Cabrera has benefited from Hamilton being out of the Rangers' lineup. The two are tied at 42 home runs each. If there is a tie, it would still count for the Triple Crown as Carl Yastrzemski tied with Harmon Killebrew in 1967 -- the last time the Triple Crown was won.

The good news for Cabrera is he's 14-for-45 (.311) against the Royals this year, but with no home runs. He'll also contend with Hamilton's return to action Monday.

Alburquerque key, but Tigers won't overuse him.
Tigers reliever Al Alburquerque isn't back to his old self yet following his offseason elbow surgery. But even at less than 100 percent, he's been a valuable piece out of the bullpen.

Since being called up at the beginning of September, he's made five appearances, and through 9 1/3 innings, he hasn't allowed a run. In fact, he's yielded only three hits while striking out 12.

Alburquerque has also been able to pitch in big spots for the Tigers, including Sunday night's game against the Twins, when he faced a bases-loaded situation. Although one inherited runner scored due to an error, the 26-year-old got out of the jam with Twins catcher Joe Mauer on deck.

In total, Alburquerque provided 2 2/3 scoreless innings to keep the Tigers in the game, although they eventually lost, 2-1, in 10 innings.

"He did terrific, there's no question about in," manager Jim Leyland said.

Despite it being a chilly 56-degree night in Detroit, Alburquerque said it was the quickest he's warmed up this year. Usually it's a lengthy routine to stretch out his arm in the bullpen, but he said he was encouraged with how it felt in a shorter time.

Still, through the final nine games of the season, Leyland said Alburquerque won't be used at the same rate if he were healthy.

"The thing with Alburquerque is for the rest of the season and Spring Training, [you can't] overuse him," Leyland said. "Let him continue to get back where you can settle in and where you're not worried about him getting hurt."

'Confusing' year for Tigers, but Leyland has insight.
With 10 games left in the regular season, Tigers manager Jim Leyland was asked his thoughts Monday on how the year has gone to this point.

"It's been a freaky year, to be honest with you," Leyland responded
However, asked if "freaky" would be the one word he's use to sum it up, he said no.
"I would say probably a little bit more confusing would be the word I'd use," he said.

There's a lot of reasons it's been a confusing year in Detroit. The team's pitching has been solid, its hitting has been OK, but yet the Tigers find themselves eight games above .500 and behind by a game in the American League Central.

Leyland elaborated.
"There's some pitchers this year that we've faced that I thought we'd do a lot better against than we did," he said. "By saying that I'm saying -- and this is not with any disrespect -- but some teams' fourth and fifth starters, I assumed in Spring Training that we would wear that guy out. We really haven't done that."

Leyland didn't single any pitcher out. But he did express disappointment in not scoring more runs Sunday night against right-hander P.J. Walters. Walters held Detroit to one run and five hits in six innings.

Walters' overall stats against Detroit provided the perfect example. He is 1-0 with a 2.95 ERA in three starts vs. the Tigers this season, compared to a 6.70 ERA against all other opponents.

"I can understand the [Zack] Greinkes and the guys like that," Leyland said. "But with the type of offense we have, with fourth and fifth starters I think we probably should've done better than we have. I know we should've."

September 25 in Tigers history:

1908: Detroit's Ed Summers pitches two complete-game wins over the A's, winning the opener, 7 - 2. The second game is a 10-inning battle with another rookie, Biff Schlitzer, that ends 1 - 0 on a Claude Rossman drive for an inside-the-park home run. Summers allows just two hits. With the White Sox idle, the Tigers move to a half-game out of first.

1940: Bobo Newsom wins a clutch doubleheader for the Tigers, pitching 2 innings of relief in the opener against the White Sox, and going the distance in the nightcap for his 21st win.

1944 - Going into the final Monday of the season, the Tigers hold a one-game lead over the Browns with the Yankees now out of the running. Russ Christopher of the A's beats the Tigers 2 - 1, to produce a tie for the lead.

1952 - Hal Newhouser of the Tigers wins his 200th game. It is his last win for Detroit, who will release him in early 1953.

1955: Detroit Rightfielder Al Kaline becomes the youngest batting champ in history, as he takes the American League crown at age 20 with a .340 average. The future all-time great will also lead the league in hits with 200, and total bases with 321. Kaline will finish 2nd in the MVP vote to Yankees catcher Yogi Berra.

1967: In an afternoon game, the Angels top the leading Twins, 9 - 2 in Minnesota, to move the idle Red Sox into a first-place tie. Detroit loses, 2 - 0, to Yankee lefty Al Downing.

1971 - With rookie C Tim Hosley hitting two homers and driving in five runs, the Tigers trip the Yankees, 10 - 7. Les Cain pitches six innings for the win. Cain finishes with a 10-9 record with 145 innings, but contends he is forced to pitch by Manager Billy Martin while he has a sore arm. Cain later claims that it did permanent damage to his arm and he sues the Tigers. In a landmark decision, the Michigan Bureau of Workman's Compensation will order the Tigers to pay Cain $111 a month for the rest of his life. A lump sum payment is later agreed upon.

1977 - Detroit pounds out 18 hits against Boston's Reggie Cleveland, but they still lose 12 - 5.
