Miggy's rivals hoping to see Triple Crown feat.
There are quite a few players close to Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera in home runs. But it appears if only one player is going to prevent him from being the first Triple Crown winner since 1967, That would be Texas' Josh Hamilton.
However, even Hamilton admits he wants to see Cabrera make history.
"I'm excited about it for him," Hamilton said on Tuesday. "I enjoy watching guys succeed at what I do. What a great accomplishment that would be."
Hamilton hit home run No. 43 to break the tie with Cabrera, who came into Tuesday's game against the Royals with 42. And although Hamilton would love to see it, he's not going to give it to the Tigers' slugger without a fight.
"I'm not going to stop playing. I'm rooting for him, but I'm not going to go out there and not try to hit home runs," Hamilton said. "But he's so close, I would definitely like to see it happen."
That appears to be the sentiment around the league.
The Twins were in town last weekend and catcher Joe Mauer, who is challenging Cabrera for the batting title, was excited about having a chance to see the league's first Triple Crown in 45 years. But Mauer wasn't giving in either.
"It's kind of fun to see a guy like that chasing a Triple Crown," said Mauer, who entered Tuesday's action with a .322 average compared to Cabrera's .331. "He's a guy that's done it [consistently] every year. To see him chasing that while they're chasing a playoff spot is pretty fun. ... But I'm going to keep going out there and trying to do what I can do."
So just like teams are trying to play spoiler and keep the Tigers out of the postseason, other players will attempt to do the same to Cabrera's Triple Crown hopes. They're just less enthusiastic about it.
