For the second time this post-season, Raoul Ibanez has delivered a 9th inning, game-tying HR, this time a two-run blast with 2 outs. Ibanez joins Joe Morgan (1983), Dave Winfield (1992) and Julio Franco (2001) as the only players aged 40+ with HRs in two games in the same post-season. With three HRs total, Ibanez stands alone among the over-40 crowd for the most HRs in a single post-season. Ibanez also stands alone among all players, with 3 HRs in the 9th inning or later in a single post-season.

For the second time in as many appearances, Tiger closer Jose Valverde failed to protect a 9th inning lead, this time giving up a 4-run advantage on twin two-run HRs by Ibanez and Ichiro. This is the 3rd time in Valverde?s post-season career allowing 3 or more runs in an appearance, tied for second all-time among relievers, trailing only Jeff Nelson with four such games. Valverde?s career post-season ERA now stands at 8.79.

Tigers score two in the twelfth off rookie David Phelps, the last man in the Yankee bullpen. Derek Jeter goes down and has to leave the game with what is now identified as a fractured ankle. No more Yankee magic in the home 12th. Tigers take the opener, with Delmon Young the unlikely hero with a HR and 3 RBI, including the game-winning tally.

Detroit Tigers Win, but Jim Leyland Getting Hard to Defend.
from motorcitybengals-tigersblog

Now we?re left with an interesting question: who closes tomorrow? Obviously it might never come up, but still? Valverde is tainted, Dotel threw more than an inning (and has known vulnerabilities to lefty bats). Joaquin Benoit has been almost as awful lately as Valverde? he blew game 2 of the ALDS and gave up a couple of rockets last night that didn?t affect the box score. Will we see Al Alburquerque? He IS the only guy (other than Porcello) who didn?t pitch last night and he could be due for an audition for the 2013 closer job. With luck, we?ll see who Leyland picks with a lead in the 9th of game 2.

Grandy who? Jackson and Scherzer make trade a Winner for Tigers.
from Detroit Athletic

Three years ago this December, Tigers General Manager Dave Dombrowski showed that he had some real brass. He dealt the ultra-popular, talented center fielder to the New York Yankees in a big three-team swap. The reaction was immediate ? outrage. The fan base loved Granderson, a quick left-handed hitter who patrolled center and slashed doubles and triples. He was an ambassador of the game, a smiling, friendly young guy who hustled out every grounder, got his uniform dirty, and sprinkled his quotes with ?Yes sirs? and ?No, ma?ams?. He was everyone?s Mom?s favorite Tiger.

Somewhere this mid-season, Scherzer took a huge step forward. Over a 13-game stretch, Scherzer was 10-1 with an ERA that made him look a lot more like Three-Finger Brown than Brown-Blue Eyes. Max has become a legitimate stopper in the Detroit rotation, giving the Tigers a 1-2 strikeout punch with Velander that few teams have seen.

Berry in the 2 spot, 6 through 9 Dirks Peralta Avila Infante.

8 of 9 Tigers in today's lineup have faced Kuroda -- hitting a collective .352 (19x54) w/ 4 2B, 3 HR & 10 RBI vs. him.

Tigers had 17 scoreless IP between Valverde appearances.

Detroit Tigers' Jim Leyland: Jose Valverde is team's closer but will be out of that role indefinitely.

There are definitely some flaws in his delivery," Leyland said. "It's too slow."
One thing Valverde is not lacking in is confidence. But Leyland said he sees something in Valverde's body language that says he is struggling with that right now.
"It looks to me like he's kind of waiting for something bad to happen right now," Leyland said.
Leyland said Sunday that the team will not have a temporary full-time closer and will decide based on the situation.

Fun Facts About the Tigers Pitching Staff.
It has been quite a roller coaster ride this post-season and a few fun facts sum it all up:

(1) The Tigers starting rotation has a 1.10 ERA.

(2) Jose Valverde has allowed 7 earned runs in 2 2/3 IP.. The starting four has allowed 5 ER in 41 IP.

(3) The only Tigers pitcher who has allowed an earned run in the last three games is Valverde.

I got the impression from the press conference after the game last night that Valverde is definitely out of the closer's role and perhaps done pitching as a Tiger. Jim Leyland made no excuses for Valverde or for himself and said that he would discuss the situation with his staff after the game. I think Octavio Dotel is the new closer.
