Agent says Anibal Sanchez left money on table to be with Tigers.
from the freep

Yeah I'll bet. His agent is full of shit, IMO. How did Sanchez and his agent wind up talking to the Cubs? It is my guess that Mato aggressively shopped Anibal to successive ballclubs, until one made an offer that was the closest to their originally announced price tag and years. Sanchez very likely wanted to remain a Tiger...BUT his agent advised against any "hasty" decisions inasmuch that his value to the team would eventually/possibly bring in to him/them. His agent knew as well as every baseball fan, that the Tigers owner Ilitch, is very generous and is legendary in rewarding his veteran players for their loyalty to his teams. Mato also knew how very desperately Ilitch wants to see his Tigers franchise win a championship or two before his advancing age might make him unable to fully appreciate and enjoy them.....or before he passes away.

Mato just used the Cubs as leverage to obtain the highest possible commission for himself while still getting his client signed with the team that he really wanted to pitch for all along. Wouldn't surprise me if Sanchez got privately upset at Mato for publicly denouncing as insulting the Tigers first 4 year, $$48 MM offer. The Cubs final offer was reportedly 5 years @ $$77.5 MM, so why did the Tigers need to increase it to $$80MM to sign Anibal? Maybe it was b/c that so-called mystery ballclub offered as much, and the Tigers matched it.

December 18 in Tigers and mlb history:

1903 - At the league meeting, Ban Johnson is reelected American League president and given a raise to $10,000.
Also, the AL votes to allow coaches at third base and first base at all times: till now, only one coach was permitted except if there were two or more baserunners.
The AL also institutes the "foul strike" rule, used by the National League since 1901: a foul will be counted as a strike unless there are already two strikes.

1920 - On his 34th birthday, Ty Cobb signs to manage the Tigers for $32,500.
