Justin Verlander Signs Extension with Tigers!!!
Justin Verlander ‏@JustinVerlander
Today is going to be a great day. Big news coming!

YES!!!!!!!

Sources: Justin Verlander can make $202m under terms of his new deal. He'll get $180m over next seven seasons, plus vesting option of $22m.
Tigers @JustinVerlander agree to 5-year contract extension thru 2019 w/ vesting option for 2020.
Justin Verlander just got paid. 5-year contract extension through 2019 with vesting option for 2020.
Tigers fans can celebrate before season starts -- a 5-year extension plus vesting option for Justin Verlander.
Tigers extend Justin Verlander for 5 more yrs thru 2019, with a vesting option for 2020, could make up to $202M. Makes him a #TigerForLife
Justin Verlander's $180M contract is largest for a pitcher in MLB history ($5M more than Felix Hernandez).
Verlander will reportedly earn $180 million over next seven years, and should option vest in 2020, he'll earn an additional $22 million.
Verlander will make $20 million for each of the next two seasons, then $28 million annually 2015-2019, leading up to option.
In keeping with policies favored by Tigers owner Mike Ilitch, the team clearly began working seriously toward locking up their right-handed ace, who has a 124-65 record and 3.40 earned-run average since he joined the team in 2005.
Verlander refusing to sign an extension would have been bigger news, but the signing is certainly good news for Tigers fans.
The deal will make Verlander the highest paid pitcher in the majors and, if my math is correct, will make him 38 years old when it expires.
Between Verlander's reported terms, plus Fielder, Cabrera, Sanchez, Tigers will have just over $90 million committed to 4 players for 2015.
From 2009-2012, Verlander threw 170 pitches at least 100 MPH (including playoffs), more than all other starting pitchers in that span combined.
Verlander?s deal will include a no-trade clause.
Detroit Tigers now have $568 million invested in contracts for Justin Verlander, Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera.
Verlander always figured he deserved more than Felix. As JonHeyman CBS confirmed, he got exactly $5 mill more guaranteed.
Verlander makes $28M each year from 2015-2019 and has a $22M option for 2020 that is guaranteed if he finishes among the top 5 in 2019 Cy Young.
Yes, Verlander likes money. But he appreciates history, too. He smiles at the idea of spending an entire Hall of Fame career with one team.
JV's contract was a no-brainer for the Tigers. He brings them major money in ticket sales and the postseason.
Since 2009, Justin Verlander ranks first in all of baseball in: Starts (135), Wins (78), WHIP (1.08), Strikeouts (977), WAR (26.0, highest among pitchers).
Dombrowski: It started to pick up really over the last probably 10 days to two weeks, some high spots, some tough spots.
Dombrowski: I think the commitment was from Justin that he wanted to stay w/the Tigers organization & we wanted to keep him a Tiger.
Verlander: It's tough to say how much I love Detroit. It's tough to put into words.
Verlander: It's a unique situation where I was drafted by the Tigers, I felt like I grew up in front of these fans.
Verlander: They've been extremely supportive of me and this ball club since day one. They're the best fans in baseball.
Verlander: I want to win a World Series, not only for myself and for my teammates, but for the fans of Detroit, too. They deserve it.

March 30 in Tigers and mlb history:

1944 - Branch Rickey suggests the pooling of surplus players if major league 4F players are drafted for military service. Nothing comes of the suggestion.

1966 - Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers end their dual holdout. Both pitchers had stayed away from camp for 32 days, threatening retirement in an effort to acquire pay raises. Koufax signs for $120,000; Drysdale settles for $105,000.

1972 - Marvin Miller, executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association, completes his canvass of players on the strike issue. 663 vote in favor of a strike, ten vote against, and two players abstain.

1993 - Peanuts character Charlie Brown hits a game-winning home run - his first round tripper in 43 years. Almost ten percent of the nearly 18,000 Peanuts strips created by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz focus on baseball.

2010: Dontrelle Willis' comeback is on the right track, as he is advised by Tigers manager Jim Leyland that he has made the team as the fifth starter. The Tigers also trade P Nate Robertson to Florida for left-handed pitching prospect Jay Voss.
