March 12 in Tigers and mlb history:

1921: Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis suspends eight members of the Chicago White Sox for their alleged involvement in the fixing of the 1919 World Series. The group includes outfielder Joe Jackson, who batted .375 in the Series. Others banned are Eddie Cicotte, Happy Felsch, Chick Gandil, Fred McMullin, Swede Risberg, Buck Weaver and Lefty Williams. None of them will ever play in organized baseball again.

1946: Negro Leagues pitching star Smokey Joe Williams dies in New York City at the age of 69. According to some sources, Williams won 41 games in 1914. Williams will win election to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999.

1951: Commissioner Happy Chandler loses his bid to remain in office. Chandler is voted down, 9-7, in a tally of owners. Chandler, who started his term as commissioner in 1945, will be succeeded by Ford Frick.

1960: Ernie Harwell offers Detroit Tigers play-by-play for the first time. Detroit defeats Washington Senators 8-6 in spring training game in Lakeland, FL. Harwell replaces Van Patrick and is teamed with George Kell.

1966: Tigers dedicate Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida, and beat Twins 4-2.

1973: Hall of Fame member Frankie Frisch dies in Wilmington, Delaware, at the age of 74. Frisch batted .316 over a 19-year career. As player-manager for the St. Louis Cardinals, he led the team to the 1934 World Championship.

1980: Slugging outfielder Chuck Klein and former Boston Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.

2012: The Detroit Tigers released David Pauley.

2014: The Detroit Tigers released Luis Marte.

2018: The Astros take a short break from spring training for the traditional visit of the World Series-winning team to the White House, given they are not scheduled to visit the Washington, DC/Baltimore, MD area until September. A couple of team members, Carlos Correa and Carlos Beltran, choose to boycott the outing as they are still mad at President Donald Trump for his contempt of their native Puerto Rico after it was battered by Hurricane Maria in September.

2019: The Detroit Tigers signed Taylor Motter as a free agent.

2020: Major League Baseball announces that it is suspending spring training and delaying Opening Day, scheduled for March 26th, by two weeks, in light of the coronavirus pandemic sweeping the globe. This follows in the wake of similar announcements by other professional sports leagues such as the NBA, NHL and Major League Soccer. The 2020 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, which were scheduled to begin today, are also postponed.

Totally Tigers

Over the weekend, Jackson Jobe made some rather controversial comments about his pitching performance that caught the eye of many, including his manager, A. J. Hinch.
His statement to the press appeared to hint at a lack of maturity due to his young age, a failure to respect the competition and what was seen as a diss to the Tigers’ mantra of controlling the strike zone. Many saw that comment as a resistance to the Tigers’ strategy and even the coaching.

While Jobe pitched 3 2/3s innings of shut-out baseball, he had problems throwing strikes. His total was considered below-average in MLB. He walked 2 batters and only got 1 strikeout in facing 14 hitters.
He indicated that his ability to throw hard would see him through and felt confident that he has fine-tuned his pitching. Jobe has only pitched 4 innings at the MLB level.
Those statements motivated Max Scherzer to utter some diplomatic words of caution and advice for how to have a long and successful career in baseball as a pitcher. Hinting that pitching with finesse – instead of simply throwing really hard – is the better and safer option.

So what should the Tigers do? Name him to Opening Day, send him down to Toledo to work on throwing strikes or offer a teaching moment?

How should the Tigers handle Jackson Jobe for the start of the 2025 season?

1. Name him to the Opening Day roster as a SP.

2. Name him to the Opening Day roster and then allow him to get a reality check.

3. Send him to AAA to improve his CSW% (Called Strike + Whiff Rate)/gain some maturity.

MLB doctor explains when Tigers CF Parker Meadows could return from nerve issue. "The most important thing is, the feeling is going to come back," said Dr. Brian Schulz, the Angels' team doctor. "This isn't a permanent problem." So, how long will Meadows be out?
Parker Meadows just confirmed it's the musculocutaneous nerve. "It's a weird waiting game. Still a little numb on the forearm, but I think it's definitely tolerable. Might be something I have to fight through because the strength is still there. Trending up, though."

Final line for Tigers starter Casey Mize: 3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 4 K. 70 pitches, 42 strikes. Generated 12 misses on 34 swings (35.3% whiff rate) with 4 fastballs, 3 sliders, 3 splitters, 2 sinkers. Fastball averaged 95.8 mph, maxed at 97.2 mph. Walked 2 in 1st inning.
Spring training stats: Casey Mize has a 0.00 ERA with five walks and 14 strikeouts across 11.1 innings in four games (three starts). Four hits allowed, but zero extra-base hits. Most importantly, Mize is missing bats for the first time in a long time. Very impressive.

Jason Benetti talks Detroit Tigers: 2025 preview, 2024 reflections, inside his iconic call.
Jason Benetti — the TV voice of the Detroit Tigers and Michigan Sportscaster of the Year — joins the "Days of Roar" podcast to discuss a variety of topics, including his 2025 preview and 2024 reflections, both for the broadcast team and the baseball team. Benetti breaks down his iconic call during the 2024 postseason run: "A city that doesn't care about the odds has a baseball team to match." He also shares insight into the A.J. Hinch effect and what he's looking for out of Tarik Skubal, Riley Greene and Jackson Jobe in 2025. In addition to Benetti, Evan and Mark recap the past week of spring training games, share an injury update on Parker Meadows and evaluate the signing of José Urquidy. Two important questions are addressed: Which player is most crucial to the Tigers' success in 2025? And how good can the starting rotation become, especially if Casey Mize continues his strong performances?
