WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

Over the weekend, the NY Yankees hit 9 HRs in a game, which they won 20-9. They’ve now hit 15 HRs in 3 games.
Most of the HRs hit used a new “torpedo” bat. It’s been around for a couple years but didn’t take off until this year. It was developed by a physicist who also used to play baseball.
It is considered to be the biggest advancement in decades for baseball.
The difference is that the fat part of the bat has been moved closer to the handle and the shape is compared to that of a bowling pin. The weight of the bat has been redistributed to the sweet spot where players are most often able to make contact with the ball. That area “maximizes the force exerted on the ball.”
Part of the rationale for the new design is to help batters make more contact when strikeouts are at an all-time high. Swing speed is said to not be compromised.

Ironically, the bat is legal and fits all the qualifications outlined in Rule 3.02
Yet, given all of this, it is believed that the top sluggers will be less likely to use torpedo bats. Aaron Judge, who hit 3 of those HRs over the weekend said he’s not changing.
Of course, it is expected that torpedo bats will increase offense and help minimize strikeouts. But how will they impact defense and pitching?
Are these bats a good thing or not?

Do you want to see torpedo bats widely used in MLB?

1. Yes, every team should offer their players the option to use them.

2. No, they should be discouraged because of their impact on defense and pitching.
