Well... Reagan called black people "monkeys" who were "uncomfortable wearing shoes" (LINK). Doesn't get much more racist than that.

When he kicked off his campaign in Mississippi, talking about state's rights, there should be little doubt he was telling white southerners: "I am okay with racism. Vote for me."

I would say that puts Reagan in a tie with Trump, at least in my lifetime.

Also, at the time NY was a much different city with a significantly higher crime rate, Central Park at night was a dangerous place. As a lawyer, you should have at least a basic understanding of how those things work and that private citizens aren't privy to the inner workings of police investigations and how certain evidence is gathered.

Anyway, LBJ was openly racist who even after signing the Civil Rights Act would routinely use the "n" word to refer to black people when talking with advisors and others. He was an actual racist, but he was a Democrat which means in your mind, he was at least a well intentioned racist so you can look past that if not outright forgive it because you don't actually care about racism, you just use it as a cudgel to avoid having to make merit based arguments.
