Draft Prospect Videos and Analysis

I'm doing less breaking down film and more looking at the pile of shit we have competing for the #2 cb spot ;D

Alex Carter is on the roster, what are you talking about dude? In all seriousness though, this kid is very young at 21 years old, and I would be elated if he was able to be our #2, has the size and physicality be be that guy. I just hope he ends up a corner because that is what we desperately need, not for him to become a converted safety, which is what a lot of people are thinking.

I like Carter's potential. Don't sleep on this kid, he could steal away a starting postion at Safety or CB.

Analysis

Cody Whitehair grows on you as you watch his film. He's a bit short in the NFL OT world at 6'4 and his arms are also short for a tackle. Shorter arms than Reiff. These disadvantages do hurt him. Longer ends routinely get their hands on him first which allow him to be pushed back in the run and pass game. That being said he is a scrapper in the run and has good lower body strength to get movement after contact a lot of the time. In the pass game he is what is known as a catcher. Catchers are often tough to be with power moves because they 'catch' you like you were falling forward. You can bull rush catchers to collapse the pocket but Cody has a really good anchor and can mitigate a bull rush most of the time. I didn't see him take on speed moves but he did get beat with one inside once, luckily he had inside help that particular play. He did let someone speed rush the outside once as well, but he has good feet and partially recovered. Where he is best is in the run game and that is why I think scouts want to move him inside. Explodes off the snap. He is hyper efficient in his blocking steps and would make an outstanding zone blocker. Like I said earlier he gets good movement in his run blocking and add great positioning and he is your Shanahan/Kubiak zone blocking ideal candidate. I think it may be a mistake a bit to move a 'catcher' inside, because of the chance big d tackles get their hands on him first and collapse the pocket, but that anchor he has may make that moot.

I'm honestly hoping for one of the big athletic safeties to fall in our lap in the draft this year, Glover Quin is getting older, so if Carter is groomed to man his spot, so be it

Why did they let Isa go? That's the one move I didn't agree with unless behind the scenes he told them he'd never sign.

Lions probably didn't think he'd do as well as he did in FA, and probably expected to get him back at a decent rate. I don't know man, we definitely didn't need another hole in our defense, especially in our already weak secondary. I don't see the Lions ignoring it in the draft. They've found some safety depth in FA, but nothing starter quality. My guess is that we will nab a safety in rounds 3 or 4

I think they see Bush as starter quality. I think Quin sees Wilson as starter quality. I doubt its addressed with a high round pick...id be surprised to see a S picked prior to rd 5.

a 3rd rd pick that didn't play a snap last year....im glad you have so much hope in your heart after all these years of people supposed to being good and not panning out. Ill wait to see it on the field. Until then I think the #2 cb position needs to be addressed :D

I'm going to pull the Tony and say I don't like it but I may get it. Patriots never pay for the outlier (unlike Mayhew who seemingly always did). Up until last year Isa was a fringe player. Last year though he graded as an 80+ safety. When do you make t determination that it is a leap not an outlier?

I'm with Hughes in the thinking that they may see Bush as a starter.

Not even close to the same situation, but then again, it's you who we're talking about....

Analysis

Powerful active hands. Uses those hands to disengage blockers in the run and pass game even when they have good position on him. This is a very good skill for a D lineman. More comfortable upright than with his hand in the dirt. For a big man he is really good zone dropping. 3-4 OLB Clay Matthews or Von Miller style? Not a great first step but makes up for it by being able to disengage. Not great lateral agility either. Waste bender rather than a knee bender on some plays is likely the cause. His line stunts are poor, got to get up field before wrapping. Easily eats up TEs or FBs. Solid in the run game, not outstanding but holds his own and gets to the right gap.

Analysis

He won't start for an NFL team next year barring injury to the player ahead of him. Too raw a prospect and needs a year in an NFL program both from a strength standpoint (despite putting up a monster 31 reps) and a practice standpoint. He has the prototypical size and athleticism to work with and mold into a starting caliber tackle. Won all the 'events' at the combine across the board. Doesn't translate onto film though. The good, long arms and he uses them well extending and punching on pass pro. Better at quick setting given his huge size and length but that leaves him susceptible to speed. He allows the lineman to disengage his block somewhat easily and often. Still needs consistency in his footwork. Fast feet but can get the crossed up or the positioning wrong. He'll get beat a rep or two quickly one on one each game. Doesn't get much movement in the run game but he is so fast he can get positioning at the second level. Another Shanahan/Kubiak zone blocking style template lineman. The elder Shanahan would have loved him. Someone will take a day two stab because of his upside, but definitely a project nonetheless. Ziggy in camp would destroy his confidence.

We also recently signed former Jets CB Darrin Walls. Played in 14 games for them in 2014, 2 picks, and 12 passes defensed. Didn't see the field much in 2015 after Revis came back to the Jets. This guy might push for the other cb spot.

His shortness does not pose a problem because like all smaller Dlinemen who have success he plays with long arms and great separation. The best in class so far at that. His hands are active on the pass rush. His explosiveness off of the snap is sometimes lacking and can get him in trouble. He's best when he comes off quick and low and brings the bull rush. He can bull rush weaker guards in pass protection fairly easily. Doesn't get home a lot in the pass game though. Just holds his own in the run game, not great and at times not even good. Double teams can move him off the line with ease and get a scoop block to the second level. Every once and awhile he shows a flash that highlights his skill set, for me he is a day two pick.

His well publicized 4.6 plus pro day is what gives teams picking early in round one pause. He plays fast and is in and out of breaks quickly. He owns the curl route, stopping on a dime and coming all the way back to the ball. You can over throw him on long balls though, he's not Calvin you have to pull the rope. I don't know if he's impossible to press or that no one really tried, but even in bump coverage he releases easily. Most willing and adept down field blocker I've seen on tape. Takes pride in that and considers it part of the WR job description. I saw one concentration drop but for the most part fantastic hands. Catches the ball away from his body and can make grabs in traffic. Not huge separation on most plays but he wins. Uses his body as a shield, attacks the ball and takes it away from even the best coverage. It will be interesting to see what Quinn does if he is still there. Bigger needs elsewhere.

Literally a 10 mil cheaper version of Alshon Jeffrey....probably runs better routes than Alshon.

I watched Alshon all the time at SC and they are spitting images. Alshon fell all the way to the second because he never ran away from anybody. Both just win. You are right for a big guy I was impressed with Treadwell's route running. If Quinn goes BPA over need he may have Treadwell evaluated highest when we get to 16.

Tempting, but I'd be pretty pissed if we drafted him. Build the trenches and see what Stafford can do without weapons and early round picks everywhere on offense. I want to see the Lions fully commit to building the defense, let the offense be.

Yeah that is why I'm interested to see how things shake out in the draft. If he is there does Quinn play it prudent or give in to temptation?
