Holy moly....... RT @MikeKlis: Hold on, contract not filed in time. Elvis Dumervil has been officially released

John Clayton ‏@ClaytonESPN
What a mess in Denver. They must have filed the Welker contract and gone over the cap. So Elvis has left the roster.

Broncos have released Dumervil after they did not get his paperwork regarding the reduction in salary from $12 million to $8 million until after the 2 p.m. MT deadline that made his original salary guaranteed.

According to Klis, the Broncos received the fax from Dumervil at 2:07 p.m. MT, seven minutes and one second after the Broncos had to pull the trigger to release Dumervil and avoid being on the hook for the full $12 million. The team could still re-sign Dumervil, but there would be different salary cap ramifications because Dumervil’s contract ran beyond the 2013 season.

lol .... more like, If Dumervil now doesn't get $8M from some other team ....and it was estimated he was looking at $6-7M for leaving at most, his agent just screwed him over big time.

Poor clock management by Elvis and his agent

It was the agent.

The Broncos hadn't received anything in writing before the 4pm EST deadline, so at 3:59pm (1:59pm here), they released him or would have been on the hook for the full $12M.

So by waiting until the last second and being lazy/slow with the paperwork, the deal fell through.

Theoretically Elvis might get the same or better but there was nothing indicating any team was going to pay him more than $6-$7M and based on comparable FA signings this week, he's likely to lose millions now.

Guess if you're going to play chicken, you need to know how long and wide the road is.

Update: Elvis had texted/called friends and Broncos teammates to say he was coming back. His agent's other NFL player is ....Travis Henry.

Looking at other evidence -- emails, phone calls, etc -- that can serve to verify deal was in place before deadline.

Broncos & Elvis pissed and likely this agent is done being an agent after this....

talk about not having any leverage going into FA lol. his agent just bent him over.

I'm telling ya, restructure Stafford or let a couple guys go and sign this guy. Not sure about 8m but maybe 6-7. He would fill a big need and with the right draft picks could be a significant off season.

I agree. This would be the topper, even at 8 mil per he's worth it. Easy double digit sacks next to Suh and Fairley.

Ravens are going after him hard it seems. Man, It would be awesome to get this guy..

Pretty stupid situation on all sides and if Elvis had half a brain (or a half-decent agent) he wouldn't have been sitting in a Kinko's in Miami and would have been Snowboarding in Vail instead, as a re-signed member of the Broncos...

But with firing his hack agent (that dude's career is now over) and hiring Condon, don't rule out the Broncos re-signing Elvis with more "creative terminology" to resolve matters. Condon reps Manning and a number of high profile NFL players ....and the open market for Elvis is lower than what Denver was offering, even after the restructure.

NFLPA is allegedly looking into the matter to see if agent incompetence can be determined to be the only breakdown in communications....

and WTF?! Fax machines at Kinko's??? I thought that reserved was for young adults faxing resumes for first jobs?!
