And Lacrosse. That, I expect, is still the strongest sport at the school. 16 state championships in the last 20 seasons, and 13 consecutive from 2005-2017. Last season was the first season since 2005 that Rice was not either state champion or runner-up. Of course, Catholic Central was the champion in 2024.
I get the sense it's *slightly* waned since I was there. I remember a couple baseball coaches hating on lacrosse in those days because it drained talent away from the baseball team. But they had some legit baseball stars in the last couple decades (DJ LeMathieu comes to mind), and I feel like it's climbed back
But yeah, Rice lacrosse is still very good.
Swimming and diving was dominant in the years I was there, but seems to have fallen off.
Wrestling was always average, and depended on generational talent to thrive. Same with soccer. And track and cross country. We had a hard time keeping good runners still interested in track as a spring sport (particularly football players); one year I even got to be a sprinter because we didn't have enough to field relay teams.
Cath Central had a significant advantage in terms of students. Was always daunting going up against them in cross country, because their team was twice the size of ours. And they talked a lot of shit. But the "
RED-FORD RED-NECKS" chant we did got under their skin. Maybe that's why they moved to Novi?
We could usually beat the rest of the Catholic league without too much trouble (ND, BF, DLS, UD). OLSM was tough. When I was in HS, OLSM accepted a couple students that had been kicked out of Rice for disciplinary reasons, LOL.
