I was subconsciously thinking about the difficulty of building a heavy-hurricane proof stone fortress on a dinky island though.
You might have to reinforce the whole place with concrete before you can build something substantive on it. I guess if you have $250MM, it could be done, but you'd end up kinda house-poor, and that's no fun.
I guess there are easier ways to do it than going with bulk... (link) and a number of hurricane-proof houses on the Bolivar Peninsular here withstood Hurricane Ike... but I still wouldn't trust my life to that. of all the natural disasters, hurricane storm surge is probably the most difficult to flee from. You can't really wait and see how bad it gets, because the flooding cuts off ground access, the high winds prevent air rescue, and boating in a hurricane is suicidal.
