ESPN message boards carried on after we all left

If you win the lottery and buy an island and don't build a fortress, shame on you. The island fortress is the entire point!

true.

I was subconsciously thinking about the difficulty of building a heavy-hurricane proof stone fortress on a dinky island though.

You might have to reinforce the whole place with concrete before you can build something substantive on it. I guess if you have $250MM, it could be done, but you'd end up kinda house-poor, and that's no fun.

I guess there are easier ways to do it than going with bulk... (link) and a number of hurricane-proof houses on the Bolivar Peninsular here withstood Hurricane Ike... but I still wouldn't trust my life to that. of all the natural disasters, hurricane storm surge is probably the most difficult to flee from. You can't really wait and see how bad it gets, because the flooding cuts off ground access, the high winds prevent air rescue, and boating in a hurricane is suicidal.

How big does the island need to be to be worth it?

This 10 acre island seems as small as you'd want to go.

I see some island fortresses under $1 million that are just island fortresses. Just a structure on a rock. If your island doesn't have trees, or at least significant brush, it's too small and/or barren.

yeah, depending on location 5-10 acres is probably good. the more remote it is from other people, the more space I'd want.

a square acre is about 208' by 208'. need a few of those to have room to go for a jog, maybe grow a vegetable garden, and dig a well. you also need space for a small sheltered harbor. and without trees surrounding the island I'd imagine it would be really windy.

I daydream about the quiet and isolation of it, but I don't know what that would really be like for extended periods of time. as much as I consider myself an introvert and a bit of a loner, I've never actually been alone for long periods of time.

An island with other islands nearby, and a local bar you could boat up to would be ideal.

Maybe an island off a bigger island, and the bigger island is large enough to have year-round population and ferry service to the mainland, like Beaver Island or Drummond Island.

the one (1) big issue here is that I don't think my wife is on board with this... too much of a social person. maybe when she's older. or if I have a little hut built where she can do yoga and spiritual meditation bullshit and post pics on facebook?

Steel will hold up to any hurricane. Even that giant golf ball at Disney World is designed for 500 mph winds. So, if you don't want to build tall, you just need a panic room designed by a submarine builder. Or buy a submarine, and build your fortress around it.

Kate the bride is hot.

Weird way for a hottie to find a guy.

If I was younger, single and wedding guest, I would probably try to hit on Jess, the Maid of Honor.

I like her tats.

eh... she's ok. Something about her I just kinda don't like though. The smile? teeth? not sure.

would be kinda funny if one of the people in the article that knew them was abcd1960, and he posted comments for the article in his archaic posting style:

Brandon . . . was e x t r e m e l y H O R N Y in those days

and had not had much luck with W O M E N in real life. .

BUT . . . he hit it off with JESS, and THE MICHIGAN ANGLE

helped him to. . .

...but I was just commenting about her looks.

they all kinda seem like the Michigan alums I try to avoid.

that's just a hunch though... I wonder what this guy would've been like had he been posting with all of us, particularly during the RichRod years?

There were these dorky guys & girls who lived in my dorm that kinda remind me of all these people in the story. They were the kind of whiny Michigan fans it sucks to sit near at games.

My ideal would be a bunch of acreage in Northern-Lower Michigan for the summer & fall, and then heading down to Galveston, TX for winter-spring, once Hurricane season is over (November). real estate is relatively cheap there (since it gets hit by hurricanes on avg. every 6 years, and is guaranteed to completely flood each time), and has kind of a chill Key West vibe.

Rumseyhouse lives there, or lived there, I think.

Just don't store any valuables down there, and build your house out of things that can be powerwashed clean. they don't make waterproof drywall, do they? I guess that would be an oxymoron.

Strange, I thought your ideal would be paying all the taxes and writing more checks to the government with the grotesque excess wealth - there's nothing stopping you from doing that you know. I would expect you would keep just enough so you can work for the Bernie Sanders campaign full time, maybe splurge on a mid 90s VW Cabriolet or possibly a 3 series BMW although that might be a bit too bourgeois for a Feel The Bern bumper sticker (not to mention, too masculine even though it's a chick car). And your valuables? well, if you don't buy shit you don't need, you don't need to worry about storing any valuables...

ahhhh, abcd1960 - that dude went a bit crazy and the nonstop love for Mike DeBord, lol.

Not an island, but we have a verbal offer on land in Northport, Leelenau County. Expect to hear back Monday from the seller.

This is just as good a thread for this post as any. I?m out doing a fundraiser in Calabasas and a mom walks by with her at a lesson sun and the sun is wearing a Michigan water polo T-shirt. I say ?hi? To them and then I say ?Michigan doesn?t have a men?s varsity water polo team, does it??

And the mom says ?no, it?s his sisters shirt. She played varsity water polo at Michigan.?

, Now who the heck would you just run into out in Calabasas California who would know THAT?

Good luck. Stressful stuff.

Good luck. Stressful stuff.

It?s such a small town and at such a slow pace. The realtor listing the lots is best friends with Dr Dave?s folks who retired up there year round a number of years ago and her husband is the preminant custom builder there. I made sure she knew I lived in TC and was from the area. Apparently she?s an ?activist realtor? and has staved off some buyers from Chicago, etc looking for investment properties, in deference to local folks paying the same but being ...local.

We shall see ...bit of an aggressive offer but my wife is hooked.

Well, I meant myself.

I meant her meeting me.

She already knew there was only ladies? water polo at Michigan.

Who else would she expect would also know THAT?

It?s like the Spanish Inquisition.

Who expects the Spanish Inquisition?
