Fairley wants to a long term deal with Detroit

There's no denying that he's played well. There's also no getting around the fact that he didn't get in shape until it was a contract year. Right now he's playing like a top 10 DT. Unfortunately, the salaries for DT's drop off considerably after the top 4 (Suh, McCoy, Ngata, Atkins). I think locking Fairley up wouldn't be a bad idea, but there has to be some giveback on his part to ensure he'll stay in shape.

5 years, 30 million, with 10 million signing bonus. Fitness incentives each year worth another 1 million each year.

If the money is decent I see no problem.. But I'm thinking he wants more than what he should get..

Gerald McCoy has signed a seven-year extension with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers worth $98 million, making him the highest-paid defensive tackle in the NFL.

McCoy, a 2013 All-Pro, will get $51.5 million guaranteed, the most ever given to a defensive tackle in NFL history. His new deal will average $14 million per year.

Someone else mentioned it earlier but Suhs gone, Fairley if gone as well.. Draft a big nose tackle and go 3-4.

Could we afford to duplicate that deal with Suh?

I I don't think a team can remain good with a DT making that much..

TB doesn't have a high priced QB and WR. Easier for them to do this kind of a deal.

320 lb NTs cost 400k. Get one of those. Terrence Cody...welcome to Detroit and welcome back to working with Austin.

I'm curious what does a 3-4 change concerning secondary? Ziggy could be ideal as the Joker. Keep Levy on the other side. Tulloch as Mike, not sure about will. I always wanted 3-4.

ziggy is playing at 278 lbs now without trying to bulk up.....im sure they could put a good 10 lbs on him and play him at DE in a 3-4. Not sure hes quick enough to be an edge rusher in a 3-4 anyways to be honest. toughest choice is if theyd want van noy inside or out. Then do you play levy inside or out.

Ansah Fatty Reid/Jones
Van Noy Levy Tulloch Spend $

would probably be my front 7. take suh and fairleys money and put it toward a top noth edge guy and secondary help (mathis replacement?)

How about whitehead as the fourth Lb? Either way we'll need some serious inside help either in free agency or the draft.

They played in a 3-4 package a few times against the Saints last week. Noticably with Suh on the edge and Ansah playing MLB. Looked like it threw off Brees a few times.

Whitehead would be in Tullochs spot if they release him. Aging 4-3 MLB is a dying breed unfortunately....esp coming off a bad knee injury from simply jumping 3 inches off the ground. Roll with the kid we essentially spent 3 picks on and actually use him :D

We apparently were able to afford 22 million for Suh this year, so we could definitely afford 14 average going forward (and it helps obviously that the cap is continuing to climb.

Also, you can't just throw any old fat guy into the center of your 3-4 defense and presume you are set. You still need a good one if you expect him to do his job. And if any good 3-4 NT was on the market, we would be competing with every other 3-4 team (currently projected as 17 teams) that may have a need. If we switched to a 3-4, Fairley may be the best NT on the market.

We owe Suh 9 million in dead money next year year don't we? So he would cost around 15.5 a year

Is that true? It seems weird. I mean, how can we owe dead money on a contract that is completed? I thought dead money only resulted from cutting a player that hadn't finished his contract. Because Suh will now have played out his entire contract, anything that we might sign him to next year is completely fresh on the books.

Does anyone have more info on that?

Suh dropped his option. We shifted money onto that option.
