Game 1: Detroit Tigers @ LA Dodgers 4:10 MST

OPENING DAY OPINE.
Totally Tigers

Last night, the Detroit Tigers opened the 2025 in a game against the Dodgers in LA.
You may have watched or listened to it. If not, you may have read about it or gotten the summary from tv/radio.
Whatever the case, we want to hear from you today.
Here is your assignment……..
Tell us about your single biggest takeaway from the game. It could be something great that happened. Or a concern.
It could be about your observations about the level of play, a certain player’s performance or the ad hoc lineup.
It could be just about anything. But it must be about this first game.
And if you are planning on watching the game but haven’t had the chance yet, here’s your spoiler alert. Don’t read the comments until you have!

For me it's simply, If you don't hit with RISP you will lose a lot more games than win.

The Good: Torkelson's Historic Day, Kreidler's offense and defense, Margot's offense, Torres's offense.
The Bad: 0-15 RISP, Baez in general, Keith's plate appearances, Keeping Carpenter on the bench, Skubal's total of EIGHT pitches swung and missed, Torres's pathetic defense.
The Ugly: Three LA home runs, Greene's 3Ks, depending on the WP for run production, the top of the 9th inning in particular.

Spencer Torkelson is the 7th hitter in Detroit Tigers history to have 4 walks and a home run in the same game. He joins:
Roy Cullenbine
Jason Thompson
Rob Deer
Travis Fryman
Cecil Fielder
JD Martinez

On a sleepy morning early in spring training, Tarik Skubal approached catcher Jake Rogers in the Tigers’ clubhouse, reached into his backpack and casually handed him a box. “This for you,” Skubal told Rogers casually.Inside was a symbol of Skubal’s appreciation of Rogers’s work behind the plate. As Skubal dominated the American League in 2024, on the way to being a unanimous winner of the Cy Young voting, Rogers had caught every pitch thrown by the left-hander. Skubal is known for being extremely driven and focused, and Rogers seems to match the pitcher’s intensity in his preparation and game management. “What those guys have, in working together, that’s real,” Tigers Manager A.J. Hinch said before Detroit’s season-opener in Dodger Stadium Thursday.Rogers opened the box that Skubal handed to him, and inside was a Rolex, words and numbers engraved into the back of the face.2024 AL CY YOUNGTRIPLE CROWN18 WINS2.39 ERA228 K’STHANKS ROGRogers smiled as he related the moment, deeply appreciating the gesture. What he does not know is that when Hinch heard about the watch, he asked Skubal if he wanted to do a presentation to Rogers in a clubhouse meeting, in front of the other players. But Skubal declined, preferring to keep the gesture between himself and the catcher who shared in his extraordinary achievement.

What kinds of chaos are the Tigers conjuring up this season?
The view from the cheap seats: Does last year’s surprising playoff success even matter in 2025? Our man in the bleachers has got the scoop.

Carp stinks vs. LH pitching. That's why I think Greene is the best hitter on the team. At least he's respectable vs left handers
But even in 2025 there is still more RHP by a large margin. Carp is our best hitter. You're all giving Tork the benefit of the doubt in a largely disappointed 3 seasons but 92 PA for Carp and suddenly he stinks?

no, I said he stinks vs LH pitching. The fact that they don't have to remove Greene from the game if there is a LH pitcher is why I think he's a better hitter.

He might be the better overall player because he can play defense. But as far as hitting goes I'm going with Carp. And 92 PA is a small sample size.

you are entitled to your opinion, but I will still disagree. Carp gets pulled vs left handers because he is a liability. .586 OPS in 135 PA. Green has a 0.711 OPS vs left handers in 368 PA. I like them both, I just prefer the guy that doesn't have to be pulled.

I'll take the .848 OPS over .773. Both are injury prone.

Spencer Torkelson's Opening Day performance gives Tigers fans hope for 2025.
