Game 1: Giants @ Lions *Monday Night Football* Thread

Carolina is all about the Oline play for Detroit. Hardy, Johnson, Short, Luteleie. They have firepower to take us apart.

Hopefully Waddle's injury isn't too serious. I was only able to catch the 2nd half, but Hilliard didn't look too great.

Great game guys. I'm holding off on my Glendale booking for another week though, the Giants offense is beyond brutal. Ebron looks kind of redundant out there, no doubt he'll make plays but damn, Megatron, Tate, Bell, Bush, Fauria, even Pettigrew, seems like a luxury to throw Ebron into the mix. With the secondary dropping like flies I think it was and is time to go need over BPA. But I'll just enjoy the win and a great looking Stafford game.

I love that we had no penalties in the second half. I hope it means the coach said something and they listened.... Worried bout out banged up secondary... I like Matt's footwork and no turnovers....

srsly how much flexibility do you need? no wonder why ebrons heads was spinning all offseason. 2 back 1back 3 te 2te 4 wide .....the amount of sets we had was ridiculous...then throw ontop of that they are constantly rotating fauria and Pettigrew in lol. fauria outplayed ebron though in game 1. that defensive secondary is just plain scary...need someone back there to solidify everything.....im calling it now. With the 18th pick in the NFL draft the Detroit lions select Landon Collins, Safety.

It's a nice start and a nice complete game from the team. They shot themselves in the foot per usual in the first half with penalties, but at least they cleaned that up in the second half. Stafford actually showed some mobility and escapability and it led to a few of the TDs.

My biggest takeaway is the Lions didn't let the Giants back in it! I'm pleased to see that nice long drive in the 4th quarter that chewed up a lot of clock and put the game on ice. That is something Lions teams of the past have had trouble doing. The Lions had the Giants down and they didn't give em any signs of life. Nice to see.

Having said that....the Giants looked pretty pathetic in their own right. Carolina will be a much stiffer test, and I'm very anxious to see how the Lions perform there on a short week.

If we continue to do well it will be in spite of this years draft I don't expect a huge impact from Ebron year 1 and Van Noy blew a ball. Quddus and Couplan just bailed on everything on that second td and a super crappy Eli just went up the seam. If Stafford continues to improve in this offense it may not matter though. Like we said all offseason it's all on Stafford.

Quin and Isa did a good job. Isa and Couplin and there is no leader to follow. Quin came back and they did fine. Ihedigbo will come back at some point. Lawson played well.

Slay's improving, Quinn looked really good until he got hurt. Eli Manning and his hand waiving offense was the real star. I still think we could use those first round CBs or Nix over our Toyota Prius TE right about now.

This is true...Lions offense looked great and Ebron was a non-factor. Only one game but the belief from many fans that he was an unnecessary luxury was true for tonight at least.

Yeah not needed tonight. Did he draw coverage on the big play to Tate or was that someone else. A Te was streaking down the field. Had his redzone attempts.

Really glad Tate looks like a good number 2. And Bush caught all his balls.

Could have been. Sure held the safety whoever it was.

All things considered, the Detroit Lions had pretty good luck in the injury department in training camp and the preseason. Yes, they lost Kyle Van Noy for half the season after he had surgery on a core muscle injury, but overall, they were a pretty healthy team coming into Week 1.

Coming out of Week 1, the Lions are a bit banged up. Three players dealt with notable injuries during Monday night's win over the New York Giants, including cornerback Bill Bentley, who left early on with a knee injury. As soon as it happened, it looked like a possible torn ACL given that it was a non-contact injury, and it sounds like the Lions are preparing for that type of diagnosis.

Dave Birkett: Caldwell said Waddle suffered a calf sprain, on if Bentley tore his ACL "that hasn't been confirmed yet"

Bentley will likely undergo further testing on Tuesday. If it ends up being confirmed that he did tear his ACL, the Lions will have to look for some help at cornerback. Rookie Nevin Lawson did an excellent job in his place at nickelback, especially considering he was thrown into the fire with a matchup against Victor Cruz, but the Lions will need extra depth if Bentley's injury is as serious as it seems. (It's worth noting that the Lions worked out cornerback Champ Bailey last week.)

The Lions could also use some extra depth at safety. Although James Ihedigbo is hoping to return in Week 2 after dealing with what is apparently a shoulder injury rather than an issue with his neck or knee, the Lions are pretty thin at safety with Don Carey currently out with a hamstring injury. Their lack of depth was evident when Glover Quin briefly left Monday's game with what turned out to be cramps. Isa Abdul-Quddus and Jerome Couplin were the Lions' safeties at one point, and that was obviously not an ideal situation. (It's worth noting here that safety Chris Clemons worked out for the Lions last week.)

Finally, the Lions had a less-than-ideal situation at right tackle on Monday night. Much like last year's season opener, their starter left early in the game. This year, it was LaAdrian Waddle who was sidelined because of an injury. Specifically, he suffered a calf injury. Corey Hilliard came in to replace him, but with Cornelius Lucas inactive, the Lions were one injury away from disaster on their offensive line.

With a short week coming up, hopefully the Lions will get good news in the coming days on guys like Waddle, Ihedigbo and Carey. Obviously they will be hoping for good news on Bentley as well, but all signs point to the Lions needing help at cornerback based on the initial word on his status going forward.

He wasn't a luxury. Brings another element to the game that a lot of TES don't bring. Besides, CJ and Tate were open all night. Why change it? Keep going to the well. Ebron will get his looks, don't worry. He doesn't necessarily need stats to be effective.

I liked how they brought in 3 TE in the second half which opened up the run game. I thought the coaching staff did a nice job adjusting at the half. Ebron had a couple nice blocks for Bell.

No stats for that.

That's what it's all about. They'll bring Ebron along slowly but surely. Dummies on this board expect 8/100/2 from this kid every Sunday..lol. It's not going to happen like that right away. Not with all the other options on this team. Gotta be patient....

Right. The new offense is way more complex, Stafford was struggling a little but stayed with the plan and looked more in control as the game went on. Ebron is going to be spoon fed for a while until he shows a firm understanding of this offense. Tate was a great pick up. I think Riddick is going to be our Sproles
Stafford did a great job

I don't expect gaudy numbers from the kid at all. Don't presume to insult me without knowing how I truly feel about him.

The fact of the matter is, Ebron didn't catch one pass last night and the offense looked tremendous despite that fact. Did he do other things? Sure he did. Is he going to be a great player? I never denied that he would be.

The question is NEED. Do we need a third TE even if he is top quality? Last night to me was evidence that the answer to that question was no. Long season though, I'm sure he will get his catches like you said.

No one expects him to be a 100/2 kid every night. But I sure as hell would look to see the first round pick (top 10) get A YARD against a really horrible Giants team. Pettigrew played fine, and Fauria showed pretty damn good burst on one play. It's hard to argue that he is necessary while looking at some of the names that were on the field in that secondary. James Couplin? Come on.

And Bentley, who was starting, looks to be potentially done with an ACL injury. That's why not drafting corner/safety help in the first round looms even larger now.
