There is no guarantee that BQ/MP would hire an OC who is noticeably, much less significantly better than JBC. Especially early/midway into the football season. They might have already written off this season, hence their squawking about the Lions' fanbase needing to have more "patience"....this after firing Caldwell, b/c the '18 Lions were supposedly going to be ready to take the next step up towards divisional-playoff success...but only with a new HC.
As far as MP stating that Thanksgiving is the real start of their season, and the previous games having less importance, the Lions will have played all but 2 of their games vs likely contending division rivals, and have only 6 games left to play in the season. Being 5-5 or 4-6 might not/will not be enough to catch the Vikings and/or Packers who could have 8-2 or 7-3 season records by then.
