Totally Tigers
Before spring training, the Detroit Tigers signed 2Ber Colt Keith to a 6-year contract. He was the Tigers #2 prospect and ranked #22 overall by MLB.
The contract covers 6 years and guarantees Keith $28.6 mill (+ incentives) in total. His salary this year is $2.5 mill and it goes up incrementally every year to 2029 when he will be making $5 mill/year.
After 2029, there are 3 team (not player) options that run from $10mill – $15 mill. Should the Tigers not want to continue having him on their roster, there are minimal buyout clauses after each year.
After the expected slow start to his rookie year, Keith has improved significantly. He trails only Greene, Vierling and Carpenter in HRs. The latter has only 1 more HR than Colt. He ranks #2 in RBIs.
He has the 3rd best BA and his overall slash line ranks among the top players.
However, he’s had some issues with his shoulder, prompting the Tigers to move him from 3B to 2B. He is currently -10 DRS at that position but he is not the worst 2B defensively in MLB. He only started playing 2B in earnest last year and has shown improvement since his debut.
Now that Keith has had a chance to play, what are your thoughts about the Tigers buying out all of his team controlled years – and potentially beyond?
How do you feel now about the Tigers buying out Colt Keith's contract?
1. It was a really smart move.
2. A little too soon to tell but I'm leaning towards it being a good move.
3. Not a good move.
