Game 13: Bears @ Lions Thread

The victory extends the Lions' winning streak to five, a five-year high, and they've won eight out of nine overall.
The Lions have won eight of their past nine games, a feat thad had been accomplished only five times in club history, and only once since 1962.
The previous times: 1995, 1962, 1954, 1934 and 1931.

Detroit has matched its longest winning streak since starting 5-0 in 2011, and its best nine-game stretch since winning eight of the last nine games in 1995.
The Lions have given up 20 or fewer points in seven straight games in one season for the first time since 1961.

Stafford, who finished 21 of 35 passing for 223 yards and one touchdown -- plus the two picks -- despite the injury to his throwing hand. His passer rating was just 64.3

Star defensive end Ezekiel Ansah headed to the locker room early after suffering a shoulder injury in the second quarter. He did return in a limited capacity.

Stafford threw a tiebreaking, 16-yard TD pass to Anquan Boldin with 19 seconds left in the first half.
It was the 1,063 reception of Boldin’s career, moving him past Andre Johnson for 10th place on the NFL’s all-time list.

Dwayne Washington ran for a career-high 64 yards on 16 carries for the Lions.

Matt Prater is now 6-for-6 on field goals from 50+ yards this season. He has also connected on his last 19 straight attempts. His field goal from 54 today was another beauty that would’ve been good from another 10-yards away.

Sam Martin kicked a 57-yard punt that died where it hit at the five-yard line. If he doesn’t get into the Pro Bowl it will be a travesty of justice.

Over the last seven weeks, the Lions defense haven’t allowed a team to score more than 20 points.

Over the last five weeks, the Lions defense haven’t allowed a team to rush for more than 92 yards.

Lions safeties have seven interceptions this season, which leads the league.

Nevin Lawson: It’s time to give this young-pup some props. He was physical all day, making big plays in key moments.
He likely got away with some defensive holds, but that’s what good corners do in this league. 4 tackles and 2 passes defended.

Lions QB Matthew Stafford now has 8 game-winning drives in the 4th quarter or OT this season, the most of any QB since the NFL and AFL merger in 1970.

The Elias Sports Bureau notes that the 2016 Lions have set an NFL record for most wins when trailing in the 4th quarter (8).
The previous mark was set by the 2009 Colts, who had 7.

DeAndre Levy said he finally felt good yesterday but he is still on a cap of reps and is trying to ramp up to full reps.

Detroit's win means the Cowboys CANNOT clinch a first-round bye tonight. Dallas does clinch division if they win.

Running back Zach Zenner left the game in the fourth quarter and was being evaluated for a concussion. He never returned. He had 36 yards on seven carries before leaving.

Linebacker DeAndre Levy made his return to the lineup after sitting out the last 11 games with quad and knee injuries. Levy finished with four tackles (three solo).

Lions vs. Bears: Who gets the game ball?
Which Detroit Lions player deserves the game ball after their win over the Bears?

Marvin Jones didn't have that great of a game when you look at stats. Four catches for 67 yards did lead the team.
But it was Marvin's ability or accidental ability to draw two massive pass interference calls that really shined.

Since joining the Lions, Anquan Boldin has accounted for seven touchdowns and countless third down conversions.
Boldin's very presence on the field has saved the Lions offense on several occasions.
The 36-year-old also brings a wealth of knowledge and veteran presence to this locker room that can't afford to get comfortable.
Lastly, congrats to the old man for making some history on Sunday.

Anquan Boldin’s now in the top 10 all-time for receptions in NFL history.

Highest-graded players and top takeaways from the Detroit Lions' Week 14 NFC North win over the Bears.
PFFF

Darius Slay got beat by Cameron Meredith for a third-quarter touchdown, but he made the play to seal the game.
The Lions cornerback broke up a pass intended for Josh Bellamy on fourth down with less than 20 seconds to play. Slay – and safety Glover Quin – led a resurgent secondary that helped hold Chicago’s offense to 10 points.

The Lions had their best rushing performance (114 yards) an average of 4.1 yards per attempt against a pretty physical and stout Bears defense. Most since their Week 2 loss to the Tennessee Titans despite not having Theo Riddick.

Golden Tate (six catches, 58 yards).

Lions would become the potential#2 NFC seed w/a 1st round bye if Seahawks lose.

Yet it feels impossible still with two tough road games and a less than 100% staffrod. I have a bad feeling...hope it's just gas

This could be tragic for the remainder of the season. Stafford is terrible with a glove on.

Stafford injured the middle finger on his throwing hand the second series of the game when he hit it against the helmet of Bears linebacker Leonard Floyd trying to throw a ball away.

Certainly had something to do with his less than stellar passes. Reading in all the stories he wore before. Just a matter of getting one he is comfortable with grip wise.
Sucks though at this time of the season and playoffs in a few short weeks.

Lions QB Matthew Stafford now will have to play rest of season with a glove covering dislocated thumb and torn ligaments, per source. Adam Shefter.
There will possibly be more details as the week progresses and more medical information about the extent of Stafford’s injury becomes available.

Per ESPN, Stafford has torn ligaments in his middle finger due to a proximal interphalangeal joint dislocation. His finger is now bent down nearly 90 degrees and he has trouble controlling his finger.
In spite of the horrific injury, Stafford hopes to play through it while wearing a glove, as Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has being doing this season.

It’s not an easy injury, and in both the case of Carr and Stafford, the injury sustained should be enough to sideline either of them. However, with the Lions in the lead for a division crown and attempting to hold of the Green Bay Packers, Stafford will attempt to play through with the glove protecting his hand and will probably need surgery in the offseason.

Feels impossible that we win the division in all honesty. Packers will destroy the Bears, Vikings, then embarrass the Lions at home.

He broke his index finger and had to wear a glove several years ago. IIRC. but this is worse...ugh

It sounds like it is.
Stafford suffered a "PIP joint dislocation" with torn ligaments to the middle finger of his right (throwing) hand.
Stafford has Big Brass Balls and a very high pain tolerance playing the game like that.

What's his numbers like throwing with a glove? You've mentioned it before but I don't remember those games..

Rodgers injured his right calf overcompensating for his left hamstring injury and said he'll have a long week of rehab but won't be missing any games.

Jim Caldwell breaks character and rips the referee a new one (by his standards):

Still not quite sure what that was all about. Looked like he was talking about a spot....but we got a good spot and a first down. The announcers seemed to think it was about not blowing the ball dead like 3 yards ago....not sure why you'd be upset for them giving you a first down. Who knows with caldwell.

I'll take what I can get. :lmao:

100 yards rushing day by offense missing Abdullah and riddick
Good D for most part (other than dropping 3 picks and the Meredith TD)
Stafford a clutch drive
Marvin Jones came to life
3 more clutch plays by Boldin when needed the most
Prater a 50 yarder
Martin one awesome punt (and one bad)
Protection could have been better but was missing Swanson
Pass rush stepped up at end and one big Hyder sack at the right time.

Here?s a look at some other key stats ? good and bad ? after 14 weeks of football:

Stafford has now tallied 28 game-winning drives during his career when trailing or tied in the fourth quarter or in overtime.
Among his 28 drives, he?s now scored a rushing touchdown as the game-winning score in three of those games.

Under head coach Jim Caldwell and defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, the Lions have held opponents to 20 points or less in 26 of the team?s 45 games played (58 percent) since the beginning of the 2014 season.
This season, the Lions have held opponents to 20 points or less in nine of their 13 games.

The Lions' offense is averaging just 4.84 yards on first down, which ranks 30th in the NFL.
Only Tampa Bay (4.79) and Houston (4.53) average less. The NFL average is 5.42.

Stafford has a 105.7 passer rating when blitzed this season.

Through 13 games, DE Kerry Hyder has a team-high 8.0 sacks. Hyder needs two more sacks to become the 10th Lions defensive player to reach 10-plus sacks in a season since 1982.

Detroit?s 124 offensive possessions are the fewest in the NFL. Washington's 137 are the second fewest.

The Lions have scored 78 points in the final two minutes of a half, the most in the NFL.

Detroit?s defense has moved into the Top 10 in the NFL in points allowed per game (20.6). They?re also 11th against the run (97.7).
