Finally...Ks Sardines...Tigers sweep O's and improve to 7-9.

Doubleheader tomorrow vs last place currently 3-13 royals.

Could get back to .500 if they can win both games.

Castellanos struggling with his power numbers.. perfect game to get back but nothing.

But he's drawing walks this year so he's better

I meant more earlier in the season. He's still getting his hits but it's mostly singles. Nonetheless, he can get into some big streaks so I'm not worried. We won big, .500 ball - I'm still counting game 1 as a win.

Leonys Martin hit his first career grand slam as the Detroit Tigers unleashed an offensive barrage Thursday afternoon, beating the Baltimore Orioles 13-8 to complete a three-game sweep at Comerica Park.

Martin finished just a double shy of the cycle. Martin, who also singled and tripled, blasted his first career grand slam in a five-run fifth inning. His triple in the fourth inning traveled 421 feet and banged off the wall in center field ? as far as you can hit a ball in Comerica Park without it leaving the yard.
Going 5-for-12 on the series, he elevated his batting average to .295 with on-base numbers that are, so far, above the expectations that were set of him going into this season.

Jeimer Candelario went 4-for-4, reaching base in all five plate appearances.
Going back to his eighth-inning home run Friday against the Yankees, Candelario has gone 9 for 14 with three homers and six RBIs.

Tigers (7-9) are now 7-1 against teams with records under .500 (the Orioles, White Sox and Royals) and 0-8 against teams above .500 (the Pirates, Indians and Yankees).

WORTH NOTING

* The Tigers will decide after the game who to recall from Triple-A Toledo to serve as the 26th man in Friday's doubleheader.

Manager Ron Gardenhire said the Tigers have considered adding a position player, but it will depend on the status of the bullpen after Thursday's game.

* Chris Davis entered the game 5-for-9 with three home runs against Zimmermann and didn't take long to add a fourth home run in the second inning.

Davis is tied with Daniel Murphy for most home runs against Tigers starter Jordan Zimmermann.

* Zimmermann left the game with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth inning, but reliever Chad Bell got a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Zimmermann still has a hefty 7.71 ERA, but he's struck out 18 batters through 16 1/3 innings this year, including seven on Thursday.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Victor Martinez and added four more runs in the second to take a 5-2 lead. The Tigers added two more runs in the fourth on a two-run home run by Candelario.

Right-hander Alex Cobb allowed seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits over 3 1/3 innings for the Orioles. He walked one and struck out four.

Jordan Zimmermann gave up three home runs ? a two-run home run to Chris Davis in the second inning and solo home runs to Manny Machado in the third and sixth innings. Zimmermann allowed four runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out seven.

The 18-hit attack took some of the stress out of it for Tigers? starter Jordan Zimmermann, who was making his first start since taking a liner to the face in Cleveland on April 11. It was an uneven start for him, just the same.
He battled through 5.1 innings. He gave up a two-run home run to Chris Davis, who has punished him throughout his career (6 for 11, four home runs). He also allowed two solo home runs to Manny Machado. Machado also doubled and knocked in four runs.
But he had his moments, as his seven strikeouts will attest. He pitched a clean, crisp first inning and retired eight straight from the end of the third through the fifth. That streak was book-ended by Machado homers.

Jos? Iglesias entered the game batting .128 before hitting his first triple of the season and seventh of his career. He finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Martin added his 20th career triple in the fourth inning.
Miguel Cabrera finished 3-for-5.
Dixon Machado drew a walk in the second and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth inning.
Nicholas Castellanos was 0-for-5 with an RBI.
JaCoby Jones finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

Lefty Chad Bell came in with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth. He got Anthony Santander to ground into a 4-6-3 double play.
Things didn?t go quite as well for Bell in the seventh, though. Doubles by Trey Mancini and Adam Jones led to a pair of runs.
Bell allowed two runs on three hits over 1 2/3 innings with two strikeouts.

Buck Farmer allowed one hit in one inning.
Drew VerHagen allowed two runs on three hits and one walk in one inning with one strikeout.

Well I'm counting it as a bad ump, and mlb awful!

If Tigers are committed to playing the young guys during this rebuild then they need to kick Zimmerman's pathetic butt to the bench and let Norris get a few starts. He may be struggling but I know damn well he can match JZ's production of averaging 1 run per inning pitched. He is never going to be good enough to trade for anything so quit now and spare everyone the torture. Worst contract in baseball by far and I believe the worst all time based on dollars per WAR

On the other side of the diamond there have been grumblings about cobb.

Win while out with the wife to Quilt fest in Paducah, Kentucky. Tigers seem to play better when I'm not home/watching. Can not afford to do that every day. Need to start the lonesome take me out of town fundraiser.
In the mean time I've said this before. The hitting has not been the biggest problem. Fix the bull pen. And look what the pen did gave up half the runs in less time! I'll take the win, but how often will the O put up enough runs to over come this pen!
I do like the offense and the starting pitching is good enough, but our pen scares me. Ok I'm happy today. Still feel this team should be better, and that is the bad thing about the O too many shut outs. The O is kinda of hit or miss, They need to make adjustments Harold just said it as I am typing. You got to make adjustments. The game is about change.

Jeimer Candelario made some unique Tigers history in last series vs Orioles.

Per STATS, he's the first Tigers player prior to age-25 with 8+ hits & 2+ HR in a 3-game series since Alan Trammell in Sept-Oct 1980 vs Toronto.

Really happy about Candy. Liked what I saw last season. I forget who we traded to get him?

We've been swept twice, and we swept twice. That's a lot for this early in the season.
