JaCoby Jones hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead the Tigers to a 3-2 win over the Kansas City Royals in Game 1 of a doubleheader Friday at Comerica Park.
Jones worked the count to 2-2 against Royals reliever Brad Keller before hitting a line shot over the Tigers bullpen.
It was the second walk-off win for the Tigers in three days. Dixon Machado hit a home run to beat the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday.
The Tigers (8-9) have won four in a row. The Royals (3-14) have lost nine in a row.
Tigers starter Michael Fulmer allowed only two runs through seven innings. Daniel Stumpf, Shane Greene and Joe Jimenez finished with three scoreless innings of relief.
The Tigers couldn't get much going against Royals starter Jason Hammel, but they maximized one of their rare opportunities in the fifth inning.
James McCann hit a sinking line drive that center fielder Abraham Almonte knocked down but couldn't catch. McCann raced into second while Almonte scrambled to chase the ball. When JaCoby Jones shot a grounder to the left side of second base, McCann initially broke back to the bag, but then recovered to make it home just ahead of the throw.
Jones hustled to second on the play, stole third and then scored the Tigers' second run on a sacrifice fly.
Fulmer was nearly flawless his first two times through the Royals order (they went 2-for-17 against him), but gave up six hits after that.
But after the Royals tied the game in the seventh, Fulmer got Whit Merrifield to ground into a double play to escape the jam.
WORTH NOTING
* Sometimes beating the shift is easier said than done. With the Tigers' infield shifted to the right side in the first inning, Mike Moustakas attempted to push a bunt down the third-base line. He came awfully close to getting one inside the line.
If Moustakas had been able to keep it fair, the ball would have settled into shallow left field, allowing him either an easy single or a hustle double.
Instead, he started the count down 0-2 and ultimately struck out.
* Moustakas extended his 11-game hitting streak with a solo home run to right field in the sixth.
* Michael Fulmer struck out two of the first three Royals he faced on Friday after striking out just two of 20 batters in his last start in Cleveland.
Right-hander Jason Hammel allowed two runs on five hits over nine innings for the Royals. He walked two and struck out four.
James McCann went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Jones finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Jeimer Candelario went 1-for-4.
Nicholas Castellanos finished 1-for-4.
Miguel Cabrera went 0-for-2 with two walks.
Victor Martinez (0-for-4) had a five-game hitting streak snapped.
Leadoff hitter Leonys Martin went 0-for-4.
Lefty Daniel Stumpf allowed two hits in a scoreless inning of relief with one strikeout.
Shane Greene had a 1-2-3 ninth inning to keep the game tied.
Joe Jim?nez allowed two hits in the 10th with one strikeout.
Right-hander Joe Jimenez was entrusted with the 10th. He gave up a lead off single to Whit Merrifield and a two-out single to Cheslor Cuthbert. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. But Jimenez buckled down and got Abraham Almonte to pop out to shortstop Jose Iglesias.
Fulmer didn?t get the win, and he?s probably disappointed that he gave back an early 2-0 lead. But after what he went through in Cleveland in his last start (nine runs, three innings), this was a big step forward for him.
?Something?s got to change,? he said after that start.
And something did. He had to wait eight days for a shot at redemption, but for six innings, he was back to his old dominant ways Friday.
First clue that things were different. His first three pitches of the game, all two-seam fastballs, had sharp, late movement. He struck out John Jay looking at all three. He never got his two-seamer to work in Cleveland.
Second clue that things were different. Fulmer induced just two swings and misses in 72 pitches in Cleveland. He had two in the first inning this time, and eight by the sixth inning.
His fastball velocity in Cleveland was 92-93 mph. He was ringing it in at 95-96 on Friday.
Different day, different opponent, better weather, the real Michael Fulmer.
Fulmer, with his two-seamer and slider combination inducing a lot of weak contact, allowed just two singles to Whit Merrifield through the first five innings.
Fulmer?s line: 7 innings, eight hits, two runs, one walk and four strikeouts.
